I don’t know about anyone else, but I grew up watching the Star Wars movies on DVD, aka the Special Edition. But, the highest quality this is available is SD. These versions tend to be overlooked because of their glaring issues (Even more changes including re-inserting prequel Characters digitally, changing the Han/Greedo scene again, drowning out John Williams’s iconic score with new sound mix, strong magenta tint, Vader’s lightsaber looks pink, Luke’s lightsaber in ANH has a green tint in some shots, lightsabers in Empire and Jedi have washed-out effect in some shots) but this is how I grew up and I’d bet a lot of other people grew up on. But, this version was changed when the whole saga came together for the 2011 Blu-Ray releases in 1080p HD. My thought is someone could rip these versions and upscale them to 4K so this version can see the light of day again. Please note I’m not planning on doing this, but I think it could be a fun idea for a fan restoration for someone to do, because this is like, the one version of the original films that’s not in at least HD. The theatrical versions have been seen in 4K/HD (4K77, Harmy’s Despecialized, SSE, Project Blu and other GOUT Upscales) several times in fan edits, the Special Editions have been seen in 4K with the 4K97 projects, the 2011 Blu-Ray was already in HD, and the most recent horrible 2019/2020 Disney+/Blu-Ray release of the films that contained even more changes was released in 4K Ultra HD. I’m just putting it out there that restoring the 2004 Special Edition could be a cool idea because while it did have several flaws, it’s an important part of Star Wars history. Again, not doing this. But if someone did want to do it, I’d think that would be awesome.
