Lord of the Rings 35mm (FOTR/TTT/ROTK/FOTREXT released) — Page 9

There is no 35mm for ROTK extended and the new reissue will likely be DCP and digital. We will never see prints of these again not sent to thousands of theaters. I never thought I was experiencing a once in a lifetime event when I saw Fellowship on 35mm, but it truly was. You can’t get that anymore.

Its only in less than two decades they abandoned exhibition here. But it feels like it’s been a hundred years. I can’t remember the last movie I saw on film Star Trek Into Darkness, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? I think it all went away in 2012-2013 and they started only doing digital.

Are these the same as the ones by remsouille?

You’re better off asking them directly, but i’d assume not as these are extended whereas remsouille graded the theatricals

Hey, everyone. I was able to get the 35mm Extended Edition copy of FOTR but it “only” has DTS-MA 6.1 and the optical stereo for audio. I wanted to combine the commentary tracks into the file. What’s the best way to go about this? AND, how to sync it from the DVD/Blu-ray source to match the 35mm copy when playing it back?

There is no spoon.

Yeah, I’ve personally watched the reissue of the trilogy a few months ago, and as expected, it was just a digital projection of the 2020 remaster.

I have just finished watching the trilogy and wow… they look incredible and may very well be my favourite way to watch these gems.

Thanks to all involved as well as SnooPac for answering my questions and helping me obtain these versions with such haste.

Cheers!

I would like to clean up these scans, because I’d like the clean-up to be done as minimally as possible (so as to preserve the character of the film). I spent a month working on a copy of ROTK 35mm before I learned that the files I have may not be the best (or most recent) available version, which led me to this forum.

Could someone help me identify if I have the best and least compressed files to use as a base? The MKV files I have are 4K. Here is the file size of the video stream (according to MediaInfo). This doesn’t include the audio, etc.

ROTK: video stream size: 86.8 GB
TT: video stream size: 66.7 GB

I don’t have the theatrical file of FOTR yet, and honestly, if I can get my hands on it, that’s probably the one I would clean up after ROTK (and before TT). I just want to make sure I’m not starting with video that’s already been reprocessed. Thanks to anyone who can help answer this question.

I Don’t have the CRCs/MD5s etc off hand.
But file names and file sizes (in bytes) that might help. These should be the entire file size (not just the size of the video stream).

LOTR FOTR HDR 23_98fps.mkv: 70278205325 (65.5gb)
35mm LOTR TTT UHD HDR v1.1.mkv: 77745918846 (72.4gb)
35mm RoTK 4K HDR v.1.2.mkv: 100019591822 (93.2gb)
35mm FOTR EE UHD HDR 23_98.mkv: 88100976801 (82gb)

Is the FOTR: EE 35mm scan, scanned from the full FOTR: EE 35mm print, or is it a scan from the FOTR theatrical edition and then some Bluray scenes patched in?

From my understanding it’s a scan from a full FOTR: EE print?

Thanks for the information, SnooPac. Looks like I don’t have the original files, but it’s unclear if the video stream is identical. I’ll PM you about obtaining the correct files once I’ve hit my seven days, and I’ll try to remain optimistic. I got a decent amount done in the third act of ROTK, and I’ve done a lot of adjustments by hand, while using various sources to get it right.

And yes, Juicy Pep, the FOTR EE scan is from a full print based on the same remaster they did for the EE blu-ray.

Oh, that means it’s the same remaster that has different color grading to the original 2001 theatrical version.

Can someone explain the differences between all the different versions, i tried watching the youtube video of the remasters but still cant get my head around it. Correct me where i’m wrong but there was the original film 35mm which was made back in 2001 which is what the film was shot on, then that got scanned to create the dvd version but that had the green tint to it. Which then both DrDre and 44rh1n/Dwalin both corrected. But 44rh1n Only regraded the normal edition not the extended edition?

Can anyone comment on the audio on the FOTR EXT? The noise floor is really high with that constant “shhhhhhhh” sound and I haven’t heard anyone else mention this so wondering if there’s an issue on my end. I thought maybe there were multiple audio tracks but I only see 35mm optical stereo listed. Anyone else hear the same thing?
