What Star Wars has meant to you

All of us here love Star Wars for a variety of reason. Many (if not most) all of those reasons we share. We are all here for a greater purpose (the preservation of these films in their original form), but there is more to just preserving the films which draws us into the Star Wars universe.

At the end of her genre lecture each semester, my film teacher asks us all “Why is the force still with us?” Over the years she has compiled a collection of reasons why Star Wars ties so strongly into so many aspects of our lives. For us, it is more than just a movie. It is something deeper. For me, I cannot explain it. It is almost as if I have always had a connection to “the force” even when I had yet to see the Original Trilogy.

I am lucky - I caught the tail end of the saga, being born the same summer that Return of the Jedi came out. I have (however small) a physical connection to the trilogy, and to me that has always been the little gold leaf on my heart.
It’s not that I spent my childhood watching these films and playing with make-shift lightsabers out of cardboard tubes. No…it was the fact that Star Wars gave me a childhood. It gave me something to hold on to, to wrap myself up in. It gave me the strength to look up at the night sky and honestly believe again.

Star Wars has taught us how to be brave, and how defend our honor. It taught us right from wrong and brought us to worlds we never thought could have existed. It showed us that there is a little bit of good in everyone and no mater how high the cards are stacked against you, that how ever complicated things become, good will always win.

So please, share with all of us (because why else are we here?) - what has Star Wars meant to you?

For me, it's always given me that childhood hope that there is something spectacular waiting around the corner, some amazing destiny that can sweep me up like it did with Luke. There are surprises everywhere, from Luke looking up into the twin setting suns of Tatooine, lamenting and yearning, to becoming a hero, to discovering a world of honor and mystical power he never knew existed, to finding out that strange little creature was a Jedi master and more wise and powerful than he could have ever thought. To grow, even in the face of the most horrible, from being a boy to being a man and confronting his destiny and learning what's really important. I've heard the old adage that everybody feels like they're Luke, but they wish they were Han, but, hey, I'd have no problem at all being Luke except for missing out on Leia in the end.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Personally, Star Wars has meant that I would have been a whole lot wealthier if it had never of come along...

When I think of the money my parents spent on Star Wars stuff for me as a kid, and now what I have as an adult...is it worth it?

Star Wars was a fantasy world for me and my brother. It wasn't the only one, but it was definitely the favourite. I actually took up fencing because I wanted a lightsabre. Then I took to other forms of sword-play. My main focus is kendo now, but there's still a buzz and hum whenever I pick it up. I will, someday, have my lightsabre duel with my brother.

Where to begin......

It was the first movie I saw in a movie theater at the age of 5 in 1977. The original is still my favorite movie of all-time, even though I have seen it and ESB & ROTJ hundreds of times now. For my childhood, just growing up and getting action figures for Christmas, and the best was when I got the Death Star for Christmas '78. I remember my brother and would demolish it everyday, and then rebuild it. I am so glad I was able to be there for all three releases to make sure the PT generation gets their facts straight about the history of SW.

SW just harkens back to certain points in life you remember fondly, and can pinpoint them easily. I remember seeing ESB in 1980, and at 8 years old, thought it was too dark for me, how can do this to Luke & Han? Those are the good guys! 25 years later, it is a true classic.

I remember seeing ROTJ in 1983, and loving the ending, and not being bothered by the ewoks that much being a kid. Now they are too kiddie for me, but the ending is still powerful.

I remember in February 1983, when Star Wars first came on HBO, I was 11 and waited 6 damn years to watch it since the movies, no video, just a long wait. And that night watching it and realizing how much I still loved it since '77. Then everytime I saw the 20th Century Fox Log and Music come on, you knew it was Star Wars.

THEN- "For over a thousand years, Lucas put out 3 great movies, then the dark times, the SE, and the Prequels!" A man named Lucas betrayed and murdered those memories" From 1997, it went from loving SW to now bitching about what went wrong everyday, when Lucas should have let it end with Jedi.

For me now, I still love the OT, and can watch them any day of the week and twice on Sunday, as they have never gotten old to me, for that reason I have never gotten to old for SW.

CO, do you by any chance remember watching The Star Wars Holiday Special, Caravan of Courage, and/or The Battle for Endor on TV when they first aired? If so, what are your memories for them, and how did you look at them then, in contrast to now?

I'll drink to that!!!

Jenny puts hope in my heart that there is a girl out there for me that loves SW as much as I do....and hates the prequels as much as I do too!!!!

She said she has a film teacher, so she's into films in a major way I would guess......so am I. So between that and SW, we have some common interests.

I don't feel I can properly gauge what Star Wars has meant to me, because I do not remember a time when Star Wars wasn't present in my life.

Its kind of like in It's a Wonderful Life. I need Clarence to come down and show me what my life would have been like. Its too difficult for me to imagine.

Actually I remember watching the Holiday Special over my aunts house when I was 6 years old. Dont remember alot of it, but that may be cause it is not that memorable, but I think I remember a bunch of wookies in it, a couple more than just Chewbacca, is that right if anyone has seen it? The other stuff you named I never really got into after ROTJ, but do remember the Ewok Cartoon. To me it was just the three movies and that was enough to keep me satisfied.

It is funny cause as big as a SW fan that I am, when the Prequels were announced, I really didn't care. I remember arguing with a friend the month before TPM came out, and he couldn't wait for the movie, and I kept arguing that Lucas couldn't duplicate the characters of Han, Leia, and Luke in these movies, and that is why they won't be as accepted by the older fans. At that time I really didn't think of the kiddie stuff or would the movies be supbar, or all the other crap that I have a problem with the PT now, I really just thought that how will people love the same universe we grew up with, with different characters who I knew wouldn't be able to replace the great characters from the OT.

It's always interesting, IMHO, to hear memories like that of those parts of SW. It seems that the Star Wars TV productions have always gotten very little publicity in the media, and fans tend to not mention them.

Now, I first saw the two ewok movies on DVD earlier this year. For some reason, even though I never grew up in that time, and had never seen them before, I felt a strange sense of something like nostalgia for them. Why, I don't know, but it was like something you feel you have been familiar with for a long time. And The Star Wars Holiday Special, well, I probably hold the record for the most viewings of it.

God willing, I'll be working in media. Exactly what, I don't know. But right now I'm into Audio Engineering, and hope to work with cartoon audio (sound FX, voice acting, music). That and movie audio, maybe what like Ben Burtt does.

Well (and apprently I've hijacked this thread here), I've always had an affinity for entertainment media (TV, movies, radio, theater, stage). I was originally I biology major, but couldn't pass organic chemistry, so I switch gears and took control of my other love - media.

I can't explain why I fell in love with cartoons. Probably because it is lower key, you can do anything in a cartoon, the potential for storylines is endless, and I have the utmost respect for voice actors. It's a art higher than anything Hollywood can produce. In audio, you focus on pure form and delivery of the line. You don't fuss with wardrobe and shout out "I'm ready for my close up now, Mr. Divile!"

To quote Mark Hamill, while working on the Radio Drama, "Radio is a very different form. Here, nobody can see how silly you look as you pretend to dangle from a weather vane. It's all about the delievery of the lines."

With the line of work that I want to go into, chances are good that I might actually work the Mr. Hamill himself from time to time, including a list of other well respected voice actors.

I have to agree with the stuff about animation and cartoons. You really do have unlimited freedom with that medium. I realized that when I saw the 1978 animated Lord Of The Rings. Love or hate the adaptation itself, you have to admit that the animation in the film is incredible. You can literally do ANYTHING you want with no constraints whatsoever.

I've been meaning to get into Japanimation or Anime or whatever it's called. I'm trying to compile a list of stuff to watch so I can get into it. That stuff, from what I hear is pretty impressive in terms of story. Definitely not your traditional Saturday morning cartoons. Also, there's an animated film coming out next summer based on the Conan books. I'm a big fan of the original stories and the early concept art looks mighty impressive. That should be very cool to see.

That is really awesome that you're into this stuff, Jenny. Wish I had pulled my head out of my butt when I was in school and applied myself more to that. It's more in line with my interests, which is story. I love stories of all kinds....doesn't matter if they're books, comic books, movies, TV shows, stage plays, you name it. Fits in with my pipe dream of being a writer. Cross fingers on that one.

Organic chemistry?!?!?! YUCK!!!! Your experience sounds like mine with Calculus....except I didn't wake up and switch gears.

Mark Hamill was awesome when I met him. He did the Joker's voice for me and it was great!!!
