This is a project I wanted to do after I saw a bit of the VHS footage of the film and it was nice that Paramount got a chance to release two LaserDisc versions of the film given its time period, which is why you’ll see pan-and-scan LaserDiscs from Paramount in the US such as Forrest Gump.
I did get everything planned for this preservation, such as grabbing every international DVD release I can find and get access to, including the official Russian voiceovers, and I did eventually got the LD, but as I was recording it, there seemed to be a problem right off the bat.

That’s right, it’s a smudge. I tried to clean it off, but it’s permanent. In fact, this is clearly why I wouldn’t be able to preserve this LD until I find a way to clean it off, since it actually caused the video to warp while I was attempting to record it. I was thinking of grabbing another copy, but they are extremely rare to find, and the only copies I can find on eBay are widescreen editions, so it looks like it would either take forever to find one in great condition or eventually find a guide to get rid of that smudge.
This preservation will include the LD PCM and AC3 audio, the DTS-HD audio from the Blu-ray, and many foreign dubs and subtitles I can grab from their DVDs.
Hopefully I’ll finally get a chance to preserve it someday.
