Making Shmi and Anakin no longer slaves is one of the best choices, and something I plan on doing in my own edit. The slave aspect adds too much emotional baggage for what the film is trying to depict and undermines the intended parallel to Luke. Anakin and Luke’s choices are not meant to be owed to upbringing, rather individual choice, and having their stories parallel each other cements that (much like, say, Orion Pax and D-16 in Transformers One).
