Ocean plastic waste is one of the planet’s biggest crises, and it’s getting worse. Most of this plastic doesn’t start at sea. It comes from land.
Once the plastic reaches the ocean, it’s extremely difficult to do anything about it. The plastic pollution spreads through marine ecosystems and ultimately breaks down into microplastics.
In Mumbai, that is exactly what is happening. Plastic often ends up in storm drains and waterways and then flows straight into the ocean.
That’s why in our 34rd mission, we went to Mumbai and teamed up with Plastic Fischer, an organization whose low-tech invention is stopping plastic waste from entering the ocean by capturing it at the source.
