Picard season 1
Picard season 3 (re-ordered to become season 2)
Overview
Beginning in the spring of 2020, I’ve made a considerable effort to re-edit each season of the live-action NuTrek series with the goal of producing something a bit more cohesive and similar in tone to the 90s shows that I grew up with. While these edits will certain not satisfy all detractors, they have greatly enhanced my viewing experience and caused me to enjoy rewatching shows that I would otherwise never revisit. The editing process has also helped me to gain a greater appreciation for the details and intentional heart that lies buried in much of the vanilla content. My hope is that these edits allow that good to shine more brightly.
I initially released edits of Picard season 1 and Discovery seasons 1, 2, and 3 over the course of about 2 years. At that point, however, I lost a hard-drive, upgraded my computer, switched to editing in DaVinci Resolve, and moved my file hosting to Mega. All of these changes led me to rebuild and refine my edits. So far, I have completely redone Picard seasons 1 and 3 (re-ordered as season 2). I hope to do Picard season 2 (which will become my season 3) and then move on to recreating my Discovery edits. I have ideas for Strange New Worlds, but that will probably not happen until the entire series has been released so that I can fully understand all multi-season plotlines.
As always, please support CBS/Paramount+ by purchasing hard copies of the vanilla content or paying for a subscription with their service. Fan edits could not exist if the studios didn’t produce the raw material, and we all want them to keep doing that.
These edits will not:
- Remove the socio-political agendas present in the vanilla content
- Make Michael stop being an integral part of each DSC season plotline
- Make Picard a perfect person who has never made mistakes and has no regrets
These edits will:
- Make DSC and PIC somewhat more episodic
- Maintain major events and character arcs to ensure future continuity
- Heavily rearrange and trim scenes in order to reduce plot holes and inconsistencies
- Trim scenes to tighten pacing and improve the flow of each episode
- Moderate melodrama (excessive moodiness, insubordination, and/or supportive compliments)
- Trim select images and lines in order to maintain a PG-like rating (similar to 90s Trek)
- Standardize the length of all NuTrek seasons at 9 episodes ranging from 25-60 minutes in length
I wish that these edits could:
- Include footage that was never recorded to fill in some remaining plot and character gaps
- Include a host of new VFX shots to change certain ship designs and costume details to increase universe-wide continuity (not within my skillset or budget)
Bottom line: If you hate NuTrek, you still probably won’t like these edits. If you find NuTrek tolerable but wish that it made a little more sense, was a little more family friendly, and wasn’t quite so melodramatic, these edits might significantly improve your viewing experience.
As far as technical notes go, all edits are in 1920x800 resolution, and all changes have been painstakingly made using DaVinci Resolve Studio. The content has been created using mkv rips from official BluRay disks, occasional upscaling via Topaz AI, the incorporation of additional audio from the official soundtracks, and even a couple of AI lines using the DaVinci Resolve AI Voice Changer function. I have not done any additional VFX work (rotoscoping, model replacement, etc) because that is beyond my current skillset and budget. I did use a bit of de-aging by Big Screen for the first two Data scenes in Picard season 1.
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not publicly thank the following people/organizations for their inspiration, feedback, and/or direct contributions to this ongoing effort:

Summary of Edits and Biggest Changes - Released Edits (PM for more information)
PIC season 1
- Picard’s illness/mental issues are present throughout the season, not just at the start and end.
- Soji and Narek’s relationship is more of a slow build instead of a quick-start and plateau.
- The cube gets some use.
- There is no tentacle invasion, and instead there is more Trekian resolution.
- There is no random wrap-up sequence to end the finale.
- Future VFX may heavily reduce the number of ships in the Starfleet and Romulan fleets, add a bit of diversity to those fleets, and restore a couple of battle shots of La Sirena but without holographic duplicates.
PIC season 3 (re-ordered as season 2)
- All scenes aboard the Titan have had their lighting increased and their color shifted for a more bronze look to set the Titan apart from other ships like the Enterprise F and the Stargazer in what will become season 3.
- There is less hide and seek with Vadic in the nebula, enabling the arc to reduce to 3 episodes.
- The Changeling does not randomly use a copy of Odo’s bucket.
- The events in the nebula stand alone as the focus of the first arc, with no Raffi plotline.
- The scenes on Matalas Prime have been reduced to a single flashback of how Worf met Raffi.
- Jack’s visions are redone and re-paced for a more gradual buildup. Now he starts out with what might be PTSD flashbacks, then seeming premonitions that scare him, and then finally the red door. The transitions in and out of his visions have also been redone to match the ones for Picard’s visions in season 1, since they are related.
- Vadic’s takeover is compressed into a single big episode.
- It is never shown that Vadic’s henchmen are also Changelings, letting us instead imagine them to be some new type of Jem’Hadar or similar genetically engineered soldier.
- The Titan now returns to the Fleet Museum after Vadic is defeated to plan their next steps.
- When the Titan goes to warn the fleet, the TNG crew stays at the Fleet Museum. Scenes with those characters in the final episodes have been recolored to look different from those aboard the Titan.
- Since the TNG crew is not onboard the Titan at Earth, many of the scenes have been painstakingly recut to omit those characters from the Frontier Day events.
- These changes position the TNG characters to more naturally take the Enterprise D out of mothballs.
- When the Enterprise does the Death Star run, the shots are all trimmed and slightly slowed down to make its movement bigger and more graceful and less like a fighter or Bird of Prey.
- Additional shots from JTVFX’s Wolf 359 animations and from Voyager have been incorporated to make the entrance and exit from the Collective more intense.
- Seven does not accept a promotion at the end, and we are left with her fate undecided.
- The wrap-up scenes with Worf and Raffi and with the Enterprise G are not included because we need to leave room for season 3 (formerly season 2).
Summary of Edits and Biggest Changes - In-Progress Edits (PM for more information)
PIC season 2 (re-ordered as season 3) - Edit to be re-created from version 1.0 mp4s
- The plot builds at a more even pace, with fewer and shorter interruptions.
- Q is implied to be, or directly is, responsible for more of the coincidental story elements.
- The search for Jurati happens in a single episode to convey more urgency.
- There are no stretches where important characters randomly disappear in the midst of their stories.
- There is no last-minute drama surrounding the launch.
- The FBI side-plot is repurposed as a final test for everything Picard has learned this season.
- Q’s interventions are clearly tied to his TNG appearances with white light and the “Q Flash” sound effect.
- Hints of the First Contact soundtrack are sprinkled throughout to amplify the Borg vibe.
- Future VFX may create a partially de-aged Q to help distinguish his initial tampering with his current presence in the 21st century scenes. It may also enhance the Borgified look of the assimilated soldiers.
- Since this now follows what was season 3, Data will be implied to part of Soji’s public-relations tour.
- As a further tie-in, Picard will be focused on his childhood in part because of his new identity as a father and ongoing struggles with Jack.
- The events of Frontier Day will implicitly explain why Rios will have rejoined Starfleet after they lost so many senior officers.
- Following the prior season, these Borg will truly be unexpected by the characters and represent a new direction following the final defeat of the Borg we knew.
- The Enterprise G might launch post-credits.
DSC season 1 - edit to be re-created from version 1.0 mp4s
- The Klingon scenes are greatly reduced.
- There is less melodrama and fawning over certain characters.
- There is no Harry Mudd. While I liked him, taking that plotline out greatly streamlined the season.
- A certain character doesn’t get murdered.
- The war is resolved in Discovery’s absence, and Starfleet doesn’t consider using genocide to win.
- Future VFX may swap out some ships for more traditional designs seen in ENT and SNW.
DSC season 2 - edit to be re-created from version 1.0 mp4s
- The spore drive gets turned off until it’s actually needed mid-season.
- A certain not-murdered character doesn’t get resurrected in a way that makes little sense.
- The threat is from the present, not the future (it only grows to become apocalyptic in the future).
- There are no quasi-Borg fake outs.
- The second Red Angel is only responsible for the signals that follow the events of “Perpetual Infinity.”
- Kelpians do not suddenly know how to fly starships.
- Future VFX may reduce the number of unmanned drones in the final battle to make it less busy.
DSC season 3 - edit to be re-created from version 1.0 mp4s
- There are no references to the 32nd century and a few are changed to place the season in the 28th. This leaves the Temporal Wars (and the Relativity with its unique design and new uniform colors) in the future.
- There is no Grey rebirth. While I appreciate the intent, and “Forget Me Not” is lovely, I never understood why he is the only host who ever got to come back to life, and he also doesn’t do much besides get a body.
- The seed-ship adventure is gone in order to streamline the season.
- The Burn is solved by chance proximity, not research that should have been done by others 100 years earlier.
- The ensign is an ensign, not somehow also the XO.
- There are no turbolift roller coasters.
- Future VFX may replace random 23rd century background ships and modify the ensign’s uniform to remain consistent.
DSC season 4 (formerly season 5?) - brainstorming only so far
- Re-position this season as more normalizing of the political situation following season 3.
- Remove the impending marriage of Saru; instead have him transitioning to a new role with the Federation on behalf of his homeworld, which he visited again at the end of season 1.
- Remove Book’s grief over his homeworld, which won’t have been destroyed yet.
- Imply that Book’s drama with Michael is the result of her new role as captain of the Discovery.
DSC season 5 (formerly season 4) - episodes to be re-created from version 1.0 mp4s; brainstorming only so far for episodes 6-7
- There is still no Grey rebirth. This stalled the project back in 2023 by making the Zora arc a challenge that still needs to be solved.
- The second half of the season will be very compressed. One of my biggest goals with the season is to improve the flow while trimming roughly half the episodes in the second half. I’m trying to essentially merge every two episodes. We’ll see if that works out.
- Find a way to incorporate or call out Captain Rayner (maybe via AI voiceover lines related to the ongoing disaster response and evacuation work).
- Incorporate the wrap-up scenes from the series finale.
SNW season 1-5 - brainstorming only at this point, because I need to see where all the arcs end up
- Implement minor tweaks for better cohesion with my edit of DSC season 2.
- Rearrange episodes to spread plot lines across each season (T’Pring, Mbenga’s daughter, Pike’s destiny).
- Tone down the Alien parallels for the Gorn while not changing the essential facts.
- Move Una’s arrest to the start of season 2.
