Too bad Bryan Singer wasn't on top of this; he certainly could have used it in Supeman Returns.

That's sad - you'd think that would be locked away in a vault or put up in the Smithsonian next to the whip and fedora of Indiana Jones or something.

John Ottman, the man who composed the music for the X-Men films, recently spoke out about the music for Superman Returns.

"I'm up to my earlobes right now editing the film. I won't really get into writing the score until February sometime. We'll probably record sometime in April. The franchise must evolve, and so should the music, but at the same time, I acknowledge it would be a crime not to incorporate the original theme. So much of this film reminisces about the original, that we must build upon the musical identity Williams created. At the same time, we have to move forward and not make the film feel dated, pathetically trying to be the original all the time. So it's going to be a tough assignment. But there's no ego here. As a fan of remakes and sequels, I get pissed when the original theme isn't used. So I'm not going to make that mistake with this one. However, it does strike me as the kind of scoring assignment where I'm damned no matter what I do. I'll be using the theme too much, or not enough, blah-blah… All I say in interviews at this point is that whatever is best for the film will be done musically!"

It struck me as funny that he commented that the franchise has to evolve along with the music, because this whole film is being pitched as Superman 2.5, the sequel to 1980's Superman II. Not much of an evolution there.

I really, really do not like what I've seen of this movie. I can accept that changes need to be made from time to time, but the costume is simply not something you can change. It has to look like Superman and right now it doesn't. Not even close.

The costume alone is enough to give this movie one strike before I even see it.

as far as the costume is conerned, i thought the same thing when i saw the first spiderman trailer. it looked corny as all get go. BUT, the acting made up for it, although i'm not a big fan of the first half of the first movie (I hate exposition, especially when one can get everything you need to know from the beginning credits a la spiderman 2). i'm hoping the same thing goes for the new supe movie.

Aside from the enormous and bulky looking boots the costume doesn't really bother me much. What I worry about is mainly the story. From the trailer we can assume there'll be elements of an 'origin story' in it but seriously at this point WHO needs the hear the tale of Superman's origin? Perhaps if you were 'jump starting' the series ala 'Batman Begins' but then why include SII footage and why all the bluster about it being a 'sequel of sorts to SII'? Have it one way or another.

I would have seen this film as an opportunity to do the kind of Superman story shown in many of the comics- the all-to-human Clark/Supes up against some previously nigh impossible to render on film villain or situation. Forget about Luthor for once. He doesn't HAVE to be in every bloody Superman story. Instead what we told/shown from the advance stuff is what appears to be essentially a post-modern remake of the Superman origin story aka the first Christopher Reeve film. Even that film in its own time was a sort of post-modern realization of sorts but still keeping true to the heart of the character- remember the jabs at society at the time such as no more 'phone booths' as such?

I don't know... something just smells poopy about this production to me.... I hope I'm wrong.

Spidey's costume didn't worry me so much, mainly because the colors were right and overall look was consistent with what we've seen in the comics for a long time now. The red they're using for Supes' costume is so dark it's almost brown. Getting something like that wrong, right off the bat, makes me a bit concerned about how well the rest of this is going to be handled, particularly since we've been told that this movie is in the same universe as the first two Supes films, from 25 years ago. Keeping a consistent look for the costume would have allowed that to work better, I think.

I'm all for making changes when necessary to make the story work, so long as you stay true to the spirit of the source material. I'm just wondering how they dropped the ball on this one. It's not like they have to make a new costume because this is supposed to more real world, a la X-Men movie costumes. And the new costume wouldn't even give that effect, given the way it looks.

Yes, I know, I'm picky about the costume, but this is the big one -- the superhero who allowed all the others to follow, and the one from which all others sprung forth into four color glory. If Warner can't get this right, it will be a big blow to them, particularly in wake of the reported $200-300 million budget. Scary stuff here.

I don't fault Singer for wanting to build off of the Donner films. They were obviously among the most successful translations of comics to the big screen, and drawing on the look and legacy of those films could be a big boon, if done correctly. But once you say that it's related, you can't make changes to things like the costume or Lex Luthor's character.

It's called continuity, and watching new writers ignore previously established continuity (and I'm not talking about universe-wide relaunches here) more and more is what made me turn my back on comics to begin with a few years back. That's just as bad as the things we criticize Lucas for in not making the PT match the OT in terms of story and plot. It all has to match up when you're making another chapter in an ongoing series, and right now, I'm a bit concerned about how well this one will work.

Possible major spoilers and some set and prop pictures HERE.

In my opinion this keeps seeming less and less... hmmm.... 'right'?

First off, an astronomer is able to see the remains of Krypton and its big news. Not very clear but enough to see that the remains of the planet of Krypton are in pieces. Clark Kent/Superman finds it necessary to find out if there are any survivors or is he truly the last son of Krypton. Superman goes to the Fortress of Solitude and “grows” himself a crystal ship and decides to travel to his home planet.

But here is where the problem arises, Superman is scheduled to testify against Lex Luthor but by him leaving the planet the state has to release Lex and drop all charges.

Superman leaves and does not tell anyone, including Lois Lane.

Lois Lane becomes angry at Superman during his absence and starts writing editorials about Superman, “The World Does Not Need Superman” type of stuff.

As a big fan of real estate, Lex ambitiously plans to make big bucks while Superman is away.

Lex Luthor knowing the location of the Fortress of Solitude decides to pay Superman a house call. It's obvious that Superman is not home. The Fortress of Solitude has a hole in the roof the shape of the Crystal Space Ship that is now en route to Krypton. Lex is free to raid this abandoned home.

Lex Luthor raids the entire Fortress and most of its secrets. It's not just collecting trinkets but the technology that he is after.

It's been some time, maybe even years, and Superman is finally arriving to his home planet of Krypton. He is not dressed in your traditional blue, red and yellow costume but instead a platinum colored suit without a cape.

What he sees shocks him. There remains large pieces of the planet intact floating in space. We even see the large white Dome that we are so familiar with from the first Donner film floating in space.

But as he gets closer he realizes that he is not feeling well. The explosion has created giant pieces Kryptonite. Actually, most of the remains of the planet are almost all Kryptonite. Instead of fleeing he decides to see the remains of his home planet. His ship flies through some giant canyons. He finds these giant statues that resemble the Argonaths from the Lord of the Rings movies. These statues are from past leaders of Krypton. These statues resemble the leader of Krypton that we first saw in the first Superman film.

Superman is finally content that he visited his home world and realizes that he is indeed the Last Son of Krypton.

While Superman was away Lex has been able to study all the Kryptonian technology that he stole from the Fortress. He is getting ready to start implementing his plan, to create a new continent.

The world has continued to live without its hero. It has been able to withstand wars, terrorists attacks and countless other tragedies.

Lois Lane has also continued on with her life. She is in a very serious relationship with Richard White who is portrayed by James Marsden and she is the mother of a young child. The big question is who is the father?

Superman comes back home after being away for a few years.

There is a private space shuttle launch that the whole world is watching. It's a Virgin shuttle on top of a large 777 type plane. Lois Lane , along with tons of other reporters, dignitaries and politicians are aboard the plane in what appears to be a historic event.

There is a malfunction and the shuttle damages the 777 rutter/tail upon its separation and the plane is now on its way back to the ground sure to meet its destruction.

But never fear especially when Superman is near. However, the world does not know that Superman has returned. Superman quickly arrives to try to stop this tragedy from happening. The plane is in a flat spin and he tries to grab a wing but the wing breaks off as he gets a hold of it. He knows that as fast as the plane is going down and spinning he could very easily injure everyone on board. Time is running out and he only has seconds to stop it.

On the ground there is a Championship baseball game going on and quickly the ball players and fans realize that there is a plane headed right towards them. Superman flies to the front of the plane and starts trying control it by its nose. The plane is about to hit the ground when instead of it crashing and burning to a thousand pieces we see the fuselage buckling under the pressure of Superman holding the very front of plane just a few feet away from the ground. The buckling effect is somewhat similar to what we see in the first Matrix film when the helicopter crashes into the building and we see the windows and building buckling and having a wave effect.

Superman gently puts the plane down right on the diamond and centerfield, quickly rips the doors off the plane to make sure that everyone is safe and okay. He goes through the cabin and sees Lois but does not talk to her. He gives the quick little speech that flying is still the safest way to travel (a la the first Superman movie) and quickly gets ready to fly away. When he gets to the door of the plane all the TV cameras that were broadcasting this game worldwide are now pointing right at Superman and his image is on the “giant screen (jumbotron) on the stadium centerfield. Click here for set pictures from LA shoot of Superman Returns!

The entire world now knows that “Superman has returned.”

This is the first part of this major spoiler report. The following reports will include details of a major earthquake in Metropolis, Superman confronting Lex in his “new apartment” (scene 272) and Superman being mortally wounded by …..

This is as wrong as wrong can be. Superman deserves better.

On a more positive note, from TheDigitalBits:

Yes... looks like it's true. We've known for a while now that Warner Home Video was working on new DVD special editions of the Superman films to tie in with the release of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns later this year (in theaters 6/30), but now we have the first actual confirmation... from Ilya Salkind, who co-produced the first three Superman films! Salkind has acknowledged that he's working with Warner on the new DVDs, and that all of the films in the series are being restored and given deluxe new special edition treatment, a-la last year's Batman Anthology collection. By far the best news in all this, is that it seems that Warner is FINALLY allowing Richard Donner to create his original director's cut of Superman II! How damn cool is that?! As many of you know, Donner directed Superman: The Movie and most of Superman II back to back, but was eventually fired from the sequel. Director Richard Lester was hired to replace him, and it's Lester's cut of the film that we've seen all these years. What's cool is that Lester's theatrical cut of the film is being given special edition treatment as well, so you'll be able to fully explore BOTH versions of Superman II on DVD this summer. Lester MAY even do an interview for the DVD - something he's been reluctant to do over the years given the controversy. This information comes from Salkind via The Superman Homepage fan site, which expects to publish a full interview with Salkind in the coming weeks. Very cool news indeed (though keep in mind that until Warner announces this set, it's all still unofficial). Thanks to Bits reader Matt K. for the heads-up on this.

More from the digital bits on this:

Late in 2006 (tentatively in November, timed to coincide with the DVD release of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns), look for a 14-disc Superman: Ultimate Collector's Edition box set. This will feature new deluxe editions of all four of the original feature films, including a Superman II: Special Edition with something called The Donner Cut. This is being assembled by editor Michael Thaw based on the film's original shooting script and Donnor's original notes. At least 50% of the film will be footage you've never seen, more than 70% of it directed by Donner. You'll also get Richard Lester's final theatrical cut of the film. The Donner Cut will only be available on DVD in the Ultimate Collector's Edition box set, although it will also be released in HD-DVD (and likely Blu-ray Disc if that format is available).

We were actually shown a clip of the new Donner Cut at the event - the original opening to Superman II, in which Lois Lane notices a picture of Superman in a copy of The Daily Planet... and then she looks at Clark Kent standing nearby... and she begins drawing glasses, a suit and hat on the picture of Superman. She figures it out. Then she tells Clark she knows who he really is... and jumps out Perry White's office window to prove she's right. Clark runs at super-speed downstairs, and blows up at the falling Lois to slow her fall. She lands safely in a fruit stand, by which time Clark has already run back upstairs to preserve his identity. Someone asks him where Lois is, and he replies, "Uh... she just stepped out for a minute."

An interesting thing to note however, is that it seems Richard Donner himself hasn't yet been involved (and is not involved in cutting the new version of the film). During the event, I chatted with AICN's Drew McWeeny (well known as "Moriarty" over there) who told me that he's been interviewing Donner recently (watch for that to be posted on AICN soon). The director has reportedly told Drew that he's not really interested in revisiting the film. When asked during the event what Donner's involvement was (whether or not he'd do commentary, etc), Warner execs said, "That's still to be decided." Our guess is that the studio is still negotiating with Donner to participate, and that it's merely a matter of a dollar figure that everyone is happy with. Cross your fingers on this, because it'd be a real shame if he declined to be involved. FYI, IGN also has a brief interview with Donner that touches on this.

I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. Whether or not Superman Returns sucks or is great is so moot right now ... finally all four of Christoper Reeve's films will get the treatment that only the first one got, and F'ING FINALLY we're going to see the Donner cut.

Kneel before Zod!

Edit: Dark Horizons interviewed Donner as well.

Oh yes, good stuff. Tis a shame that Christopher Reeve himself did not live to see the special editions of the other three, even if the last two did suck (something Reeve himself readily admitted).

Sadly, it's also a shame Richard Pryor won't see a special edition of III. Say what you want about that film, Richard Pryor did make it fun. And one of my favorite Mad magazine issues, I might add.
