That’s some major “main character syndrome” energy right there lol. Trust me, you’re not as influential as what you’re thinking you are.

Deliberately misinterpreting and misrepresenting what I’m saying just for the sake of being argumentative? How original.

Author

Not in the slightest.
“…but no doubt the video I posted helped push it along significantly.” It didn’t.
“Is it purely coincidence that the day after I posted it, Sonny Hale posted all of the clips himself, then HelloGreedo, EchoBaseNetwork and Harmy made videos very soon after that?” Yes. You had no influence in these decisions.
“…I’m just glad to have contributed in some way” You didn’t.

Hahahaha okay mate, somebody’s having a bad day. This is supposed to be a day to celebrate together and of course somebody like you has to bring it down significantly. It’s obvious to anybody that Sonny Hale posted all of the leaked shots in higher quality because I’d only posted the non SE shots in a much more compressed form two days earlier. And yes, HelloGreedo clearly made his video because the two of us posted the clips on YouTube which also started another reddit thread. Why is that so hard for you to believe? It’s really not a big deal I’m glad that he did

Author
Time

Actually, having a great day! Trust me, you were in no way, shape, or form part of the private conversations. Whether you believe that or not is on you.

Author
Time

I never claimed to be apart of the private conversations lol, nor do I want to be if I’m being honest. Again, deliberately misrepresenting what I’ve said. He would not have posted the 17 minutes worth of clips on the 13th of November if I hadn’t posted them on the 11th, that’s the bottom line. This was a month after the reddit thread happened so it had died down by then

Trust me, the morons over at the blu-ray forums were, sadly, more influential in the decisions

Yeah, I’ll get the OT 4K 50th Anniversary Edition when it comes out. ‘Bout f**king time too!

I don’t care what Disney’s reasons are for doing this. At last, commonsense prevails.

Out of interest, who are these people that are supposedly upset that the originals are being restored, and released into theatres?

I think the variety of online attention it received since it originally leaked on Reddit probably led to them announcing it. After that leak it was repeated by a variety of pretty mainstream websites. Pretty much impossible for one person to take credit for it, except the person who originally discovered the ALI YouTube page and downloaded all of the clips.

I’d be surprised if their original plan was to announce this today.

It was a very short blurb on their website with no details, and it seemed like they were just trying to get ahead of the leaks.

Very much seems like something they’d announce with more fanfare usually, like at Celebration 2027 (maybe the home media releases will be announced there?)

They haven’t announced Empire or Jedi yet either. Maybe those are planned for 2030 and 2033 in theaters? Hopefully we don’t have to wait that long for the home media releases…

Just people in the comments on my YouTube video/community post and on Rick Worley’s terrible special edition video. “Anomaly Inc” and “ZoetropeGuardian” are incredibly upset at me and the fact that this is happening in general, I’m sure Rick Worley is too. They genuinely can’t accept that it’s actually happening

If be shocked if they weren’t released in a boxed set. That’s the Star Wars home media MO

The minority of people who prefer the special editions lol

But that’s what choice is for, the viewer can pick the version they prefer.

Just like how pretty much every other movie with a director’s cut has released all versions.

Close Encounters, Blade Runner, Godfather 3, etc. etc.

The stupid part wasn’t doing the special editions, he’s correct, the director is free to tweak their movie if they want to. (Assuming the studio allows.)

The stupid part was gatekeeping it, and telling viewers they’re no longer allowed to watch the theatrical version, and trying to ban it and take it off the market. No other director has really done that.

Even Steven Spielberg later admitted that re-editing E.T. was a mistake, and he reversed his changes.

In some cases (Blade Runner, Godfather 3) I agree that the director’s tweaks and re-edits are better, but they should still give viewers the choice of what version they want to watch.

They put all 5 versions of Blade Runner out on Blu-Ray! That’s how it should be done.

Came here as soon as I heard the news.

Actually overwhelmed with emotion that what we all have hoped for for so long is actually happening. End of an era, really, although I’m sure all the fan restoration projects will still have their place.

A toast to all on the forum. I’m not sure how much credit we can all claim, but I’d like to think our collective unwillingness to give up pushing for this for so long played a part in making this happen.

Lucas, should have his arms torn out of their sockets for causing this decades-long drama.

Agreed. Release ALL VERSIONS of a title in one set (or almost all).

I doubt this will ever happen, but I’d be shocked if the Lost Cut of STAR WARS turned up as a bonus feature for the 50th Anniversary 4K. I’d settle for the deleted scenes restored (was hoping the same for the 50th Anniversary 4K JAWS BD).

In some ways, I’m sympathetic.

I’m an editor myself, and I’ve worked with directors who had the temptation to go back and re-edit their films, tweak them, fix problems that we didn’t have the time or money for, etc.

It’s pretty common.

But at some point you have to move on, and realize that’s the best we could do at the time.

Sure, maybe we could go back and do a director’s cut, but I’d never support erasing the original version and pretending it never existed.

Honestly, I’ll be fully happy when I’m sure we’ll get the three movies in 4k/1080p blurays bundles (individually or as a box set).
Ok, I know I’m in the minority here (so please don’t trigger the Death Star at me!) : I like most of the special editions changes (minus “Han didn’t shot first”, Jabba in Mos Eisley, the Sarlacc beak and Jedi Rock to name a few) but do you think that this restoration will be used as a template to create a color timing accurate, non DNR’ed version of the SE? I would love to see “Definitive Editions” where all the problematic changes are reversed. Obviously, this brings a problem : what to keep and what to reverse? I think that the exemples that I cited could definitively be reversed. Then remaking the CGI in Mos Eisley with a modern technology would be enough. Those “Definitive Editions” would remain coherent with the prequels and peacefully coexist with the OOT. That would imply messing with George Lucas work, but isn’t Disney already doing it by releasing these OOT restorations?

Well I didn’t mean for it to come off that way, if I was going to be egotistical about something I think I’d pick something a little more impressive than this > MistaL said:

It’s fantastic news, and the restoration looks like the best and most detailed picture quality yet seen. I’ll be there opening night, and buying the 4K.

Like Omne above, I’d also like the restoration to be applied to some sort of definitive edition because there are many small elements within the Special Editions that I would miss (the scene with Biggs and Red Leader, the rebel fighters approaching the Death Star, the open vistas of Cloud City, the Bantha herd before the sail barge). But there’ll never be an official new cut that keeps the good bits and jettisons the bad bits (or even unilateral agreement on which SE bits are good or bad). I guess that’s what fan edits are for…

The physical release is obvious but They will most likely just release the ULTIMATE ORIGINAL boxset after all 3 films have been released in theaters + another year of waiting. And since ROTJ came out in 83, that would mean the boxset wouldn’t see a relase till 2034 or 5. Which would be in 9/10 years… Or They could release individual boxsets for each film after the theaterical release along with bonus content from that movie as a bonus dvd. Or they might only include the deleted scenes and bonus material in the ultimate collection to make people actually buy all 3 films bundled up again; Just this time it’s justified since theres extra content for each movie.

They’re not going to sit on them that long. They will release a box set before Christmas 2027 or I’ll eat my shoe.

I feel like it’s exceedingly likely they’re going to run back the 1997 Special Edition (20th Anniversary) release schedule. They’ll have a whole year of stuff. Theatrical releases in the spring, Starfighter in the summer, Merch/Streaming/Home Video in the fall, in time for the holidays.

They’re not going to stretch out Empire and Jedi on three year (or even one year) waits per movie. They already know that with each movie release the receipts for the trilogy decrease. That’s what happened in 1997, too. These movies are 40-50 yrs old. People aren’t going to wait on them to come out in yearly installments again. There is basically no anticipation for “what happens next” that makes such a thing feasible anymore. They’ve been consuming them AS a trilogy for about as long as it’s BEEN a trilogy.

They moved the release date of Star Wars’ re-release up from April to February 19th. That’s very likely because they’re making room for Empire and Jedi to squeeze in before Starfighter opens. And if they’re doing that, they’re 100% going to have a UHD/Blu-ray release and streaming drops on that same schedule.

My only real question is about the soundtracks. I really want to believe Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk (he used to visit here!) have been working on the glory-hallelujah blowout 9-film expanded/remastered set of all Williams’ scores.

But it’s December 2025. This isn’t really happening until February 2027. We got time for all those announcements to come out (or the evidence of their existence to leak, LOL)
