If I may, I think I do understand the intention behind the shot mirroring that unfortunately caused the continuity error. The sandcrawler is on the left side of the screen, so it makes more sense visually to have threepio looking and waving toward screen left. The new version is therefore a bit jarring.

I kind of get what your saying bu also remeber 3PO is looking towards camera, so if he is looking towards camera left when the shot flips to show from his perspective what he would be looking at would be on the right. So flipping him to look right actually makes more sense as now he is looking to his left which is where the crawler is.
