After nearly a decade of false starts and multiple scripts and pulling our legs, they finally decided to cancel the Kelvin timeline. There won’t be a 4th JJ film.

I don’t accept that the odd numbered Star Trek film being bad is true. Star trek III is an underrated movie despite what I think of Robin Curtis performance as Saavik. I like Kirtie Alley’s Half Romulan passionate Vulcan more.
I think making Valeris a new character was also a mistake she should have been Saavik. Why would the crew care about some random they knew for 5 minutes who betrayed them. There was an unspoken intimacy between Saavik and Spock, a master student relationship. Valeris was created for one movie and never spoken of again.
This is a really late reply (12 years!) to the original thread, but I’ve been slowly getting back into Trek. I prefer TOS, and most of the movies…ST V is still the one I have issues with. It is interesting in reading about the BTS stuff on the movie, and how it almost killed the Trek universe. I guess it was an interesting topic to do, but maybe a better script could of done wonders. Plus, maybe a better director could of helped too. Even with all of that, I’m interested in revisiting the film.
I do enjoy the director’s cut of TMP. It really helps with making the film a lot more interesting, and though I don’t like special editions adding new touch ups to films (I’m looking at you George!), the new SFX do help.
I was 6 or so when ‘Wrath of Khan’ was released, so I probably saw it on the old ‘Super TV’ service (an alternative to cable in the MD/DC/VA areas), It seemed to resonate well with kids & adults alike. Soon after, I would catch onld reruns whenever available. The launch of TNG seemed to help gain access to reruns of TOS. I had a love/hate relationship with TNG: I either loved or hated it. I probably stopped watching after season 3 or 4.
I remember enjoying the movie ‘Generations’, and remember all of the booing st Shatner’s name in the end credits. I thought everyone loved the Shat! Then I later learned abput all of the earlier Trek drama, thanks to AOL chatrooms & such.
I need to catch up on the JJ Abram movies too…I did see the first one. My biggest issue was retreading older plots & throwback ideas into it. My same issue with ‘SW Ep VII’.
It’s sad that two of the few remaining original cast members are still at each other’s throats. I know that Shatner’s current wife has been attempting to get the hubby to end it, but doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen.

I don’t think it was ever going to happen. I rememeber Paramount seemed to want to hack the budget since the new films just weren’t bringing in SW money. And Hemsworth & Pine wouldn’t cut their salary demands. Not sure if they ever did come to some type of agreement to that. Had been a while since I heard any real type of news.
I’m not in the know but I assume Star Trek as a film series will return to a mid-budget niche franchise and the high budget tentpole is dead.
They are willing to give Tom Cruise that kind of money because he is Tom Cruise. But 200 million for a Star Trek film is a non-starter. Ironic how the franchise died the moment JJ Abrams left for Star Wars.
it’s the reality that Hollywood is failing as a whole, films don’t bring in half of what they used to. Look at MCU for instance, a string of BOX Office flops, that is for Disney they had a bad year. It’s going to be Lilo and Stitch and Avatar that saved their bacon. Unless the unlikely happened and Avatar severely underperformed or flopped I wouldn’t predict that.
MCU needs to be saved by the Russos again. All bets are off if Avengers Doomsday flops.
As for JJ Abrams I heard he had a film he was producing Flowervale Street and directing GhostWriter. But other than a cartoon Batman show he hasn’t done much at WB. They cancelled two of his shows Justice League Dark. And Demimonde. Before they even got off the ground. His version of Green Lantern also never happened. His Val Zod Superman never took flight.
Ellison hasn’t said what the future of JJ is with the studio. With Paramount. Skydance buying Warner Bros, perhaps JJ has a future with Skydance who knows. I have no idea if Skydance Paramount buys WB.
I know Tom Cruise has cozied up to Ellison to get more films made. Days of Thunder II and Top Gun 3. The movie business is far too political for my liking, I’d prefer not to get into that. Just the number of Star Trek film scripts, and changes in who was running the studio in the last 9 years is amazing, and regime changes like musical chairs on the deck of the Titanic, is headache inducing. It almost makes Disney Lucasfilm look competent by comparison, even though they have a fake Rey Skywalker movie they announced.
