It’s done well, but also you could watch any of the many other cuts quite easily at one time (this edition seems to be out of print).
It is and therefore not as easy as it once was.
Not as easy, but still doable. It was always a collector’s item, so a bit more expensive (or a lot depending on your chances in the used market today) rather than something impossible. That’s how it should have been done with Star Wars; a choice for the OOT fans (or even the 1997 SE fans) instead of it being buried.
I did vastly prefer the previous director’s edition of Star Trek the motion picture for instance because they tried to make it match what was done in 1979. The 4K was much more like a Lucasian affair. I may enjoy it as an alternate cut but I would hate if they had decided to not allow the 1979 version. But in an expensive boxed set they allowed you to have not one and not two, but three cuts of the movie including the special longer tv cut in widescreen with the matte for the Kirk finally finished.
Well that’s the thing; as a casual fan of Star Trek TMP I can live with it being the “DVD” cut whichever that one was. But at least over time different editions have existed. Even my personal fave, STVI, has been altered on different releases over time for some reason.
