STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED ** — Page 158

This may be a dumb idea in the ears of some here, or maybe it has been discussed already:

I always had problems with the different visuals of Luke’s lightsaber in ROTJ, as there seem to be at least four designs (Hero, V2, Yuma, ISYHCANL). Seeing as Lucasfilm has decided over the last few years that the HERO version is now Luke’s official design, may it be an idea to change that in this edit?
It’s just nitpicking and maybe not worth the work with CGI, but there are at least two close up scenes where you can see that Luke has two different sabers (confronting Vader on Endor and the Emperor throne room scene).

Oh, I know. He’s using models too. But I do like how this guy added the X-wing coming in and the engine glow to the ship outside.

Cool vid but, I think Adywan is going to replace the shuttle entirely with a new cargo ship…

Hopefully Adywan is okay, haven’t heard from him in months at this point.

Yeah, Ady is a “Talk less, work more” type of guy. Let him do his thing; he surely won’t disappoint.

In ROTJ when the Millennium Falcon and starfighters head towards the Imperial fleet, it’s always bothered me that TIE fighters in the background simply snap into existence due to special effects limitations at the time. I’m wondering if anyone has attempted to fix this in their fan edit or even in a demo/experiment working with the film. I’m sure it’d probably be something Adywan would correct. For reference, in the Harmy Despecialized Edition right at the 1:34:28 mark.

Any deleted scenes you want to use for fan edit but the quality was lacking, may not be off the table-

I really hope that the deleted scene with Vader telepathically reaching out to Luke in the cave at the start of the film could be restored and reinserted into ROTJ:Revisited. It’s a scene that should never have been cut.

I think that scene recontextualises the whole movie for the better, it adds some depth and gravitas (which the film could do with to be honest), it rightfully places the Father/Son relationship front and centre, and makes the final act even more epic and impactful.

It’s certainly better condition footage than the deleted scene linked above with Luke using his binoculars, that one was far rougher. It would be quite a coup if the Vader and Luke scene could be sufficiently restored to add back in to Revisited, and for me it would be the single biggest improvement that could be made to ROTJ.

Sorry, but it’s not being included. In fact, Adywan retimed the shot with the wipe transition to R2 and 3PO so that there is no more of that slowdown that was added to make up for the removal of the scene.

He also said that scene was unusable due to its quality.

The deleted scene of Luke building his Lightsaber is a good candidate for restoration; for example, here is a first pass restoration I did on that scene – some of the dust, dirt and scratches are circled in blue.
To note: I’ve added a bit of green to the blade colour, however no other colour correction has been done, plus I’ve added a light film grain. Deinterlacing and upscaling haven’t been done yet either.

Here’s what it could look like with some color.

Luke’s lightsaber is way to thick and would need to be fixed too. I’m not saying whether it should be included in the movie or not, but I don’t think it would be thrown out based on picture quality.

That already looks much better in the screenshot, and as you say it’s got plenty left that could be done with it. Restoration tools and techniques have come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of years, and are only going to improve further with each passing month. If you do further restoration of this scene Phase3 please do share!

Personally I would prefer to see Luke assemble the saber on Dagobah using the Force. It made no sense to me that Luke would walk straight into Jabba’s palace with no extra training after getting his ass handed to him. He promised to return to Yoda. I’d shift the Yoda scenes to the beginning of the film, implication being that he has been training for ages before Yoda finally dies (not mid sentence after waiting for Luke to come back). Having Luke have to use the Force to assemble the saber makes Vader’s later comments about Luke’s complete skills make more sense. It’s his skills with the Force the Emperor is interested in not his skills with a screwdriver.

Please share in your own thread, not Adywan’s Revisited thread.

That’s my thinking too – the scene can be restored, which may give Adywan a new scene he can add into his edit if he wants to.

I’m restoring a few different ROTJ deleted scenes, including this scene, which upon completion I will share in a separate thread. 👍🏽

Same here! In my own edit, that’s precisely what I’ll be doing – replacing the background with Dagobah.
