I assume they source their prints from private collectors. I always assumed cinemas just pay for the rights to screen something, never thought rights holders would come in and say you’re not allowed to use x format it has to be y.
I guess it’s for rare situation where the director or studio doesn’t want an older version playing, such as the case for Titanic. Cameron doesn’t like the original version, his preferred version is the 2012 one with the updated color grading and SFX fixes.
