Not sure if this has been discussed here yet but:

New rumor going around is that the theatrical re-release of Star Wars A New Hope planned for 2027 will be the original, unaltered version… but they might use AI to upscale it to 8k/ 120 frames per sec.

This isn’t going to happen, LOL. 8K isn’t even viable as a home or theatrical format, and won’t be for awhile (if ever). Audiences have cleanly rejected HFR everytime they’ve had it placed in front of them. There’s no market for it and therefore no reason for a careful restoration to then get run through a big ugly AI process to upscale it to a res nobody can clock at a framerate nobody likes.

Besides which if they’re actually doing new scans from the OCN the scans themselves could likely be natively done at 8k (scanners can scan negatives as high as 12k) there’d be no need to artificially upscale them further.

The number of theaters that can actually DO 120fps is like single digits, I’m pretty sure?

Also, they don’t have to have George “sign off” on anything. He sold the company over a decade ago. They’ve never needed his permission for any of this. His permission came with a $4bil price tag.
