the mono on the tc 4k still isn’t as good as the LD.

I didn’t compare it closely myself, but I thought the general consensus was the Criterion BD (same track on the UHD) has the best mono.

there’s slighly more detail on the LD compared to the 4K on the spectrogram , not a huge difference

The Mobile Suit Gundam Trilogy of films from the early 80s were “remastered” in 2000 or so. This involved having most of the original actors come in and redub their lines, and adding new, out of place sounds that belong in a PS2 game. Sadly all of the BD releases of these films only include the redubs. The only way Americans are able to experience the original sound design is if you have copies of the VHS with the infamously bad dub.

Another Gundam project with butchered audio is the OVA series Stardust Memory. In 2006, it, like the Trilogy before it, was remastered to 5.1 audio by redubbing all of the dialogue and sound effects. American releases only include the 5.1 mix, while the dub has sound effect alterations of its own, so that should be avoided as well.

The 60th Anniversary blu-ray of Psycho is nice in that its the uncut version, but the mono mix on it is just a downscale of the DTS X mix which is rather disappointing as the 50th Anniversary bluray had the original mono mix.

Universal corrected this. They issued replacement discs.

Yea after like two tries, first try was a different coded disk but used the same downmix, the second corrected disk has the true mono track

I got lucky and just got the second batch

Not sure if this will ever happen, but if anyone has the copy of Psycho, I’d like a copy of the mono audio through PM, please.

I once came across a 35mm scan that had the original mono mix, but the print it came from had a different framerate and had numerous jumps in cuts/missing frames.

I actually liked the 5.1 mixes of Vertigo and Psycho…

There’s two remixes for Vertigo

Are you talking about the DVD or BD remix?

Sorry it took 3 years to respond. The BD mixes.

I’m not really that much of a movie purist. I really should’ve thought my name out a bit more.

I thought they released the original mixes in Japan is that not the case. US is barely a footnote and afterthought for the Japanese industry. Extra money at best but not even a consideration. How many decades have Gundam fans and Macross fans been screwed here. Not to mention to Space Battleship Yamato fans.

Duel: Spielberg’s first film has also been ruined by its remastered version. I don’t know what sounds they added or changed, as I haven’t seen the movie. I’m guessing they changed the truck’s horn or something like that.

Sad thing is… it’s so badly done that even upon first viewing you can tell every single new sound as it’s all high-fidelity cheap junk that clashes with audio quality of the dialog and music:

Oh, man, for last release they changed Strickland’s shotgun AGAIN:

How the hell did THAT get approved?!

BTW, oddly French 5.1 audio on the DVD’s had original sound effects. Why in God’s name they couldn’t have the English audio be like that as well is honestly infuriating…

Also, the camera flash at the end for the BTTF 3 trailer has been altered.

Anyways, I’d like to bring up 5.1 audio mix on Criterion’s 1953 War of the Worlds. Yes, the original audio is thankfully featured, but my God… this new mix is shockingly bad. What makes it even worse is that BEN BURTT was the one that was in charge of it. You’d think he of all people would know better which libraries to use, but nope… for example, watch the collapsing church roof scene during the movie’s final act. The cheap sounding hi-fidelity falling debris sound sticks out like a sore thumb… it’s so stupidly distracting.
