Toy Story (1995)– 4K 35mm Scan [CLOSED] — Page 12

I received a PayPal payment notification today and was confused, so I had to work backwards to find myself here.

Disappointed to say the least. But to address the OP directly, it’s nothing personal: I’ve been in situations where I’ve been stalked and harassed online by people wanting to gain access to something I mentioned I owned in passing. I’m aware that continuously harping on it won’t change anyone’s mind (and makes things less likely to happen in the future). Keep focusing on you.

But if I understand correctly, it sounds like some people have received a copy? With the burden now shifting to those randomly chosen few, I might as well state my continued interest in receiving a copy, and they can take my donation instead.

This was one of those projects that could really only flourish in an online community. People use Star Wars as their standard for when the most culturally significant versions of a film become unavailable, but something Toy Story is a lot more complex when it comes to how and why the original version has been lost since the analog era. To 99% of audiences out there, the Blu-ray or DVD re-renderings of the film are adequate. But as someone who’s bought all the versions, an original film print would have been the best representation of the original film, bar none. The next best thing in my collection is a Laserdisc rip that I color corrected. I even found a theater bootleg for nostalgia’s sake.

The journey goes on, as I believe this is too niche of an issue for the studio to take notice of. One far out hope is for a boutique label to maybe include it as a bonus feature. WALL-E was picked up by Criterion, after all. I’d easily buy into an overpriced swag boxset if it were an exclusive.

I actually did a digitally sourced theatrical reconstruction if anyone is interested: https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Toy-Story-1995-Digital-Theatrical-Reconstruction-v1-0-Released/id/136424 Keep in mind I’m still in progress on making v2.0, so v1.0 will be available for a while.

Hey everyone,

Let me see if I can source a print, and if successful, I’ll get it scanned. I can’t promise anything right away, but I’m willing to do some digging, and eventually, something will turn up.

Maybe it’s a good moment for all of us to pause, take a breath, and reconsider how these fundraisers and donation systems operate. I understand some of you might not like me—that’s completely fine. But perhaps it’s time we put differences aside and start collaborating more effectively to get scans released quicker and more consistently.

To achieve that, we need a structured system. It should serve donors by providing exclusivity for a set period, after which the scans should become available to everyone. For reference, our group maintains a three-month exclusivity window, then opens it up publicly.

A personal suggestion: if you’re planning fundraisers, it’s best to have your own scanner and the print already in hand. Consistency and steady flow are key. I’m not trying to exploit the situation; I genuinely want to help steer things in a productive direction. There are plenty of good, affordable homebrew setups capable of handling 4-5 prints. You can even develop your own system tailored to your community’s needs. Trust me, if I can manage it, a group of dedicated Star Wars enthusiasts certainly can.

Ultimately, regardless of personal disagreements, the goal should always be to increase the availability of scans. Everyone benefits when that happens. Let’s move past the finger-pointing—it’s gotten silly and unproductive. Time to refocus and move forward together… How about it ?

I’m sorry everybody- but I’m refunding everybody who I haven’t sent the scan to yet.

This project has gotten uncomfortably big for me and I am obsessively paranoid about copyright issues, so I don’t want the final scan to become as widespread as I predict it to become.

I have found a large chunk of people in this community to be incredibly rude, disrespectful, and entirely ignorant of how dangerous it is to share these sorts of things on a widespread scale, and I don’t wish to associate with it any longer except for in as private of a context as possible.

The leaks that happened not too long ago have eliminated just about any trust I have for the majority of this community, and therefore I am no longer comfortable sending this film to so many people. This is a big reason as to why I have been stalling ever since the print got scanned- though the busy nature of my personal life certainly hasn’t helped.

Also, I hate to say it- but with where I am in life currently, I do NOT have the mental capacity to deal with this caliber of shit. It has become more stressful than fun at this point. I raised far more money than I ended up needing, so I feel that this is ultimately the right thing to do.

I have already refunded everybody on PayPal (except for a VERY small, as in single-digit, number of people who I trust), something to the tune of $500 total. The full scan will not be sent to anybody who hasn’t received it already, and I don’t recommend DMing me asking if you can donate or get the scan or have your donation back or anything along those lines, because I’m not going to respond. Clips of the scan may be uploaded to YouTube at some point, but only to an extent that doesn’t potentially incur any wrath from a certain large, soulless corporation that happens to own the film and all IPs within it.

My apologies to anybody who is disappointed by this. I started out extremely excited about the prospect of doing this project and sharing it with everybody who helped out- and in the end, I am extremely satisfied with how the scan looks, and I hope to share it in some capacity in the near or distant future. A lot of you were really cool when I messaged you and have been super patient, so I’m sorry that this is the way it has to be. Still, I need to put my real life before my life on the Internet, and this has simply become too much for me, so I’ve finally decided that this is what I must do.

If you’re depressed about all of this, just remember- this movie has DOZENS of releases and rereleases from over the years- all with different visual appearances- and has still remained entirely unchanged in terms of story and dialogue. All of the wittiness, the charm, and the incredible heart that we associate with 90s cinema and classic Pixar is still intact- this movie is KICK ASS no matter how you watch it!

Perhaps a full 35mm scan of this movie (be it mine or somebody else’s) will publicly surface one day- but even if it doesn’t, Toy Story is still one of the greatest animated films of all time. That’s what brought us together in the first place- great movies! 😃

To everybody who offered their support towards this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity- thank you for your passionate interest that you shared with so many other denizens here on the 'net. To my closest homies in this community- GOD BLESS YOU. #norbitrobbinscut 😎

Suffice to say, I am livid. This was the first project I donated to, and will likely be the last. To have us wait for so long and just be given that. You should’ve known better. If you donate and contribute to a scan project, donors should be given the scan, end of. Toy Story is one of my childhood movies, and to see a 35mm copy being hoarded, pisses me off. I don’t know what pisses me off more, the hoarding or the lies. While I did get a refund, it doesn’t make up for the fact that I was cheated and I’m sure everyone else feels cheated too. I may never send money to a scanning project ever again because you scammed me and all of your donors. The phrase “one bad apple, spoils the bunch” most definitely applies here. How can I trust anyone not knowing whether or not they’re just going to hoard it in the end ? While your project may have started with good intentions; the reason why I donated was to help you and so I would get a copy of the movie in 35mm in return. The fact you pull this shit is ridiculous and now comes off as you taking advantage of people that wanted to see a scan of this movie in 35mm. Especially given the alterations the movie has received over the years and hasn’t been theatrically accurate since the Laserdisc era.

The fact you say this :
“If you’re depressed about all of this, just remember- this movie has DOZENS of releases and rereleases from over the years- all with different visual appearances- and has still remained entirely unchanged in terms of story and dialogue. All of the wittiness, the charm, and the incredible heart that we associate with 90s cinema and classic Pixar is still intact- this movie is KICK ASS no matter how you watch it!”

You are pulling a George Lucas by saying “watch the movie as it is right now with all the alterations and that’s the definitive way to watch the movie and the original will be not available unless you buy an OOP DVD of a LD non-anamorphic transfer that has a ton of DNR.”

The right thing to do is give a link to the people who donated so they can download it.

Ok, I get where Trist is coming from considering that some people leaked this scan and went against his wishes, but he shouldn’t have shut down the project. Trist should’ve limited access to the scan to those who donated. Yes, he gave refunds to people who are still waiting for the final product, but that’s no excuse to hoard the files, cause what he did was untrustworthy.

Do you know who/where was it leaked to ? I just want a copy of the scan I helped fund. That’s it. I agree he should have made it limited access to the donors and none of these issues would be happening especially with donors who rightfully paid for the funding of the scan. People are just going to leak eventually, that’s reality. If he didn’t want leakers, he should have kept the scan to himself and not mention having it online. Plain and simple.

In theory, the film belongs to the respective rights owners.

A private scan of a 35mm film makes no sense to keep it secret, because technically it was once funded with donor money and made.

Keeping the scan for private reasons to be elitist makes no sense.
Because technically you don’t have the holy gral in a hard drive.

In any case I have received my refund and don’t care anymore.

But always remember that if one day your hard drives, usb etc. break down, you will lose your digital copies of your precious secret 35mm.

I’m sorry, but I have to agree with this user on this. Much like everyone else, I’ve waited a long amount of time, and paid a good amount of money to see this scan become a reality… only to find out that I’m never gonna get it at all because it was leaked. I guess one bad apple really does spoil the bunch, doesn’t it? I feel absolutely cheated on this, and I’ve waited patiently for a long time to see it, too. And this is also coming from someone that, while I absolutely love the movie to death, always finds myself unsatisfied with the actual physical media releases of the film for the most part. Sure, the 4K does look close to the 35mm version in terms of the color-grading, but does it have the original Pixar castle at the beginning? Nope, it’s Disney’s realistic CG castle that doesn’t fit the tone of the opening and leaves for an abrupt start with the Pixar logo, Sure, the UTB/10th anniversary DVDs have that castle at the beginning, but does it still have the errors that have plagued the majority of the film’s physical media transfers? Yes, and Janie’s doll body suddenly switching over to Marie Antoinette’s doll body always felt off and bugs the shit out of me. And yeah, the Laserdisc has the film without any of these problems… but it isn’t truly high quality.

I really do understand the mental health issues and the piracy concerns, and sure the community of people may seem toxic, but… a lot of communities can get toxic in general, and I don’t think any of us here in this thread alone were rude or disrespectful towards this guy. I wasn’t disrespectful about how long the scan took. I wasn’t going “where’s the scan?” every five seconds. I remained patient, and I’m sure everyone else was. And plus, isn’t the whole point of this website was to share these things privately or something? How did it get leaked in the first place? Nonetheless, I am both pissed and disappointed that I won’t be getting a scan with the $30 I spent for it, because it really does feel like a waste of money. I hope that one day this scan actually does get sent out, but by this point, I think this will just ultimately result in another thread that will be dead for years to come. 😕

There’s two school of thoughts here.

  1. Scans should be public and be shared with the whole world
  2. Scans should be private and should be shared with only a small group of donors

Not everyone on this website is in group 2, a lot of people on this website are actually in group 1. So it’s very hard to keep a project funded here private.

The good news is that, NC-17 will give us Toy Story 35mm scan for free 😃

This was the only project that I was interested in, in fact I was always looking at anything Toy Story related on the OT forums and you should’ve seen the excitement on my face when I saw that this project was on it’s way. Sadly by the time I saw the project, the donations were already closed but I was willing to donate either-way and was hoping to see at least some clips of the final project. I understand it from both point-of-views, obviously leaking the scan wouldn’t have been good but people should’ve at least seen something out of it rather than just some screenshots of the scan.

Personally I’m glad that I didn’t donate now, if I had known it would come to this I wouldn’t have donated in the first place. I’m not the person who decides how a project is dealt with but I’m just posting here for that violin guy to play for me, could use a little violin right now.

One day I’ll finally be able to see Toy Story on 35mm, in a high definition format at least.

It’s funny, of all the little things that my brain has to be obsessed over, with my luck it had to end this way.

Hope you’re doing ok Tristan, I appreciate the time and effort you put into this project.

This I don’t really understand, the whole idea of this project was to preserve the original format that this movie was released on, as it was in 1995 before home video releases. Doesn’t saying this defeat the entire purpose of the project in the first place? It’s not something that NEEDED to happen because there isn’t anything necessarily wrong with modern releases of the film besides a few technical goofs here and there, at least nothing that ruins the movie. But it still would’ve been nice to preserve something that has only seen standard definition home video releases in a modern format without the use of any AI or other upscaling plugins. It’s not like it’s something that is so niche that only a small crowd of people would be interested in, because look at the turnout of the donations and replies to this thread. Obviously we love the movie for what it is, but most of us are preservationists.

I’ll respond to some more of you guys when I have the chance. There’s definitely a bit more I’m willing to say now that I’ve had some time to collect more thoughts. 95% of you have been super understanding and I really appreciate that. If I missed any of you in the refunding process somehow, feel free to reach out- and yes, that even includes the $1-$2 people. 😛
