Hi everyone!

I’m excited to share that a preservation of the Back to the Future Trilogy Korean LaserDiscs is now complete and available. Special thanks for the invaluable assistance to ooJason as always!

Technical Details:

Title: droid1138 Back to the Future Trilogy - Korean Laserdiscs Preservation Project
Source: Korean Back to the Future LaserDisc Trilogy
LD Player: Pioneer CLD-D503
Capture: S-Video → Samsung DVD/VCR recorder (DVD-VR357)
Audio: Stereo RCA into the DVD/VCR recorder
Format: Pan & Scan
File Size: 11.82 gb Total
File Types: MKV

As with the Korean Star Wars Trilogy Preservation, the Samsung recorder’s digital output let me bridge the analog LD signal to modern equipment while capturing clean video and audio. It also helped as a means to connect the LD Player to the TV, as this DVD/VCR model has an HDMI port and Optical Out. Enjoy!

I was asked by fellow member JadedSkywalker if the release is in Pan and Scan or in Open Matte. After some research, I can say that it is more than likely Pan and Scan, as seen from the shots below.

From the Open Matte screenshot, you can see that it has significantly more visual elements on the upper and lower parts of the shot. Even though it was ideal for an Open Matte release, I believe it is Pan and Scan.

Drew Struzan did a good job on those. Really nice covers.

I think the Gatefold CLV from Japan is also Pan and Scan and not open matte. It’s also easily the worst transfer I’ve ever seen of Back to the Future. Though to be honest I like rare and early things, I’d love to have a rip of the CED for instance. Or someday for someone to figure out how to rip the muse discs.
