Hello there!
Some of you may be familiar with this amazing fan-made adaptation of Labyrinth of Evil, in the form of a full-cast audio drama, released two years ago by Everest Productions.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=9HmM9HzQYwo
This incredible fan production is directly inspired by the official German audio drama of Labyrinth of Evil, Labyrinth des Bösen (adapted into German by Oliver Döring).
The English fan-made adaptation covers the first third of the story (with two further installments planned), which mirrors the 3-disc/three-part structure of Labyrinth des Bösen.
In terms of quality, this audio drama does not differ in any way from professional, top audio productions. Nevertheless, as great as it is, there is one small but - it covers only ⅓ of the story. Almost three years have passed and there have been no updates regarding this project.
So after finishing the first part, you are kinda left with a cliffhanger.
THE FANEDIT IDEA
And that’s where my idea for a continuation (or more of a spiritual sequel) of this amazing project appeared.
I decided to create a fan-edit of the Labyrinth of Evil abriged audiobook.
I edited chapters 15 - 48 of the audiobook (the first 14 chapters were already covered by the audio drama) into a three-part sequel.
…
THE CHANGES
- I edited chapters 14 - 48 and divided them into three ~1h10min parts.
- I enhanced some chapters by adding various music themes from the prequels and additional sounds in the background.
- I also applied different voice effects/filters here and there.
- I inserted six additional scenes (borrowed from some other fan projects, details below), e.i. Dooku hiring Jango Fett and Grievous origins.
- I reordered some chapters for a better pacing.
- Each part starts with the same “A long time ago…” from the fan-made audio drama.
THE FULL CHANGE LIST is:
PART II:
- I added the “A long time ago…” from the fan-made audio drama. The voice actor just nailed Palatine’s voice.
- I removed most of the chapter #15 as it was already covered by the audio drama.
- Chapter #18 - I added some music from AotC (Dooku and Kamino themes).
- Chapter #19 - I added some voice effects for one character speaking via comlink.
- Chapter #21 and #22 - I added some background sounds.
- Chapter #23 - I added some music from AotC (Dooku/Palpatine-related themes).
- this part ends with chapter #29. I added the “Yoda Strikes Back” theme at the end for the ending credits.
PART III:
- It starts with Chapter #30. Once again, I added the “A long time ago…” from the fan-made audio drama.
- I inserted a short flashback with Grievous’ backstory as the opening scene, right before chapter #30. I borrowed it from a YT channel called Star Wars:Tales Untold (the original video is called “Star Wars: The Tragic Transformation of General Grievous”). The video was generated w/ AI and it adapts the scene from the novel. I trimmed the audio significantly so it could fit the audiobook nicely.
(originally I added a fan-made chapter created/read by @Bunt’s Books and I inserted it between chapters #31 and #32, but, in the end it sounded a bit off so I decided to replace it with the one I used for the final version) - Chapter #39: added some music (Grievous theme and some AotC music). Part III ends after this chapter.
- I added Darth Sidious theme by Kevin Kiner for the ending credits.
PART IV
This one is the closest to an audio drama and contains more changes/additions that the previous two parts:
- Added the “A long time ago…” from the fan-made audio drama again.
- Part IV starts with a flashback. I borrowed and trimmed the audio from two videos made by @SkywalkerStories (YT). The scene depicts how Count Dooku met and joined Darth Sidious, then Darth Tyranus is tasked with having Sifo-Dyas killed. In the second part of the flashback, Dooku recruits Jango Fett for the Clone Army. I felt these scenes really add a lot to the LoE story and the entire prequel trilogy.
- Chapter #43 - I added the Dooku theme in the first scene.
- I added two short additional scenes after Chapter #44. They appear in the book but were removed from the unabridged audiobook. I borrowed them from an unabridged audiobook I found on YT, read by AI and made by @PatrickPredator. I trimmed these scenes and added some voice effects/filters (e.i. for Threepio’s lines), background sounds and Star Wars music.
- The first scene depicts Mace Windu, Shaak Ti and Ki Adi Mundi shortly after Palpatine has been kidnapped. They find out that the information has been already leaked to the media.
- The second scene shows Padmé receiving the news about the kidnapping and C-3PO being told his future by a “fortuneteller droid”. These scenes maybe don’t add much to the overall story, but I felt they deserved to be re-instated.
- For pacing reasons, I moved the first part (Dooku/Sidious scene) of the Chap #48 after #46.
- I moved the entire Chapter #45 after that scene (also due to pacing).
- I inserted another short scene from @PatrickPredator’s AI audiobook right after Chapter #47. It’s about 40sec long, it sets up Nute Gunray and the Separatist Council on Uutapau. Maybe it doesn’t add that much to the overall story, but since Gunray was a big part of the first act, and of the entire prequel trilogy, I thought it would be nice to mention him in the closing act. I also added his theme from TPM.
- I also included a scene from ROTS novelization that doesn’t appear in the movie. I borrowed it from one of the AI videos made by @SkywalkerStories. In this scene, Count Dooku and Darth Sidious discuss the fate of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Dooku believes Kenobi could be convinced to their cause, but Sidious dismisses the idea, he believes Obi-Wan must be killed so Anakin could be turned.
The uniqueness of Star Wars audiobooks
For those who are not familiar with Star Wars audiobooks - they really stand out from standard audiobooks; most of these productions use the full palette of sounds and music from the movies. Appropriate filters are applied to the voices of many characters and usually you can hear all kinds of beeps, noises and explosions in the background.
And above all, what makes those productions really exceptional, is the excellent narration. The narrators (like Jonathan Davis or Mark Thompson) can imitate really well the majority of the characters from the movies. Some protagonists (like Obi-Wan or Yoda) usually sound super similar to their counterparts from the movies and other media.
Therefore the experience is very similar to listening to an audio drama.
I think most of the Star Wars audiobooks sound more like a hybrid of an audiobook and a radio drama.
Anyway, if anybody’s interested in this project, feel free to PM me ☺️
