The weird part is: Spielberg released both the Original and the new version with his "E.T." special edition DVD. Why didn't Lucas do likewise?

If the changes are indeed "improvements" to what was originally possible (as they are in his mind), then comparing it side-by-side with the original would only serve as a testament to the "wonders" he has performed with it. Right? Why does he feel so threatened?
