Star Wars Galaxies controversy...

I've never played that game, but apparently if you "alter" anything someone loves, you are going to piss off people. Movies and games included.

So it continues, the dumbing down and doing the complete opposite of what the hardcore fanbase wants to appease the wider, more causal Star Wars fan.

It's the same thing with Viz DBZ Graphic Novel (if you're a Dragonball fan, you know what I mean). All these changes to make kids and parents happy, and the "reach a wider audience" thing again. Even though, I believe the hardcore fans are buying each and ever comic and DVD to have a complete series. How many parents are willing to buy, what, 291 episodes worth on DVD. And kids interest are always changing onto the next, new, latest ... AND BIG THING!!!

I'm afraid that's the trend, selling out creativity and integrity for the all mighty dollar. And who really knows if it'll even work in the long run.

This is hysterical!!!!

November 15, 2005.....that was when my year subscription expired and I quit playing a looooong time before that.

I never really got into the game. I found it to be too much work. I didn't have the time and inclination to play it seriously. ROTS turning out to be shit (IMHO) didn't help matters for me either.

The fact that they did such a drastic and intense overhaul means that the game is failing big time. They wouldn't do anything that big if they were still getting decent numbers playing on their servers.

The game was very flawed when it came out....I know....I played it on release, but I stuck with it and I thought it did improve....there were just a lot of bugs to be worked out and many, many adjustments. Many people believed the game shouldn't have been released for another year or two, but they were working overtime to get it out there for Episode 3 promotions and all.

I predict in a year this game will fold completely.

This game was a joke from the beginning (in my humble opinion). It was first conceived as a an epic historical story, starting before ANH, but intentionally having a timeline that would allow to witness or participate in events circling around the main plot of the classic starwars trilogy.

What it turned out to be at the end of a day, was a theme park for 13 year olds who want to be darth maul and want to visit Endor - the 'secret' location were the empire would build the second deathstar (or other rather unimportant places for the starwars universe itself, viewed from a larger view than 'just the movies').

All the additional content is mostly about pimping episode 3 instead of expanding the universe in a logical way that could stand on it's own without depending on people's knowledge of the movies and the weak attempt to cater to their desires to just visit every "tourist attraction" from the starwars universe - regardless wether it made sense story-wise or not.

Even with the early idea of allowing only few force using characters, the game had far too many of them - at least when you put it into context of the original game idea. Now force user classes are openly available from the beginning and basicly the "improvements" Lucas wanted to have, merely turned out as a weak attempt to copy the leader of the genre - Blizzard Entertainment and it's "World of Warcraft".

Now I know it's always easy to blame him, but in this case, I don't think Lucas is the one that made or wanted the changes.

Sorry, gotta agree with Adam....Lucas has nothing to do with this.

I think it's SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) that dropped the ball on this. In one of the mails in that link, it mentions that some of the other MMORPGs that SOE runs have had some changes put to them as well. It's my experience that Sony makes great Audio/Visual equipment, not stuff like this.

Of course, LucasArts is probably to blame somewhat as well. After the KOTOR 2 debacle, I think they're just out for the almighty dollar, not quality games. Sad cuz they used to be known in the mid to late 90s as one of the best game producers out there. That all seemed to fall apart around 2000 or so, I think.

SWG is a complete joke. It had potential, but they screwed it royally. I feel sorry for the people who played for 2 years and built up a character, only to have it completely swept away with these changes. I know I'd be plenty pissed off.

Well, he supervised the process of implementing said changes. Being the control freak that he is - he was in fact the person who actually wanted changes made to SWG in the first place (his argument was that SWG didn't match the quality of the other StarWars games).

I was actually looking forward to the changes, since I'd like to have a good StarWars Online-Rpg to play. Yet take a look at what they did: they just cut down the complexity and furthered a mistake that was made in the first place - attempting to cater to the "tourism spirit" instead of investing the work in a believable StarWars universe that takes the player beyond the terretorial borders of the movies.

I do also blame Jim Ward of course, for he seems to have the talent to encourage George Lucas the business man, but not George Lucas the artist.
I'll try to find the article with the Lucas statement again. I'm not sure, but I think it was on IGN.

Edit: Well, I'm too lazy to look for the article. Even that article could have been false or biased, so I'd say in the end it's all us and the media speculating. I never meant to say he fired up his C++ and made the changes himself. Alas, the article I had read clearly stated that the impulse for change came from George Lucas, as he (or perhaps one of his kids) was dissatisfied with the game's quality.

That explains a lot.....Lucas' kids are responsible for all this garbage.

And we musn't forget that one of Lucas's daughters was confirmed to be his inspiration for Jar Jar Binks. No joke.

I'm too numb from those action figures to be properly unimpressed with this news.
