Will ESB v3.0 have the same color reference as v2.0?
Will ESB v3.0 have the same color reference as v2.0?
It’s not going to be 1:1 but the general look should be similar to v2.0.
Thanks for the quick reply. Looking forward to it!
Hey, Harmy. I have a couple questions to ask you:
- Can you recreate the 70mm version of ESB?
Frankly, I would love this too. But there are some obstacles: 1) AFAIK we don’t have a single source with an exhaustive list of visual changes between the 35mm and 70mm cuts, 2) We have exactly one 70mm source, which is better than zero, but it means we’re sort of stuck with any quality/blending issues that may bring, and 3) Despecialized tends to pair with hairy_hen’s audio, and right now there’s no English audio at all that would sync to a frame-complete version of the 70mm cut, let alone anything that would measure up to hairy_hen’s standards.
Again, I’m all in on this as a wishlist item too. I’d love it. But I suspect if we haven’t seen a Despecialized 1981 cut of Star Wars, which would be a considerably easier undertaking measured by all three points above, then we’re not likely to see the ESB 70mm cut until after that.

He’s posted on a few other threads with equally tone deaf posts
Hey Harmy, just a quick note: besides the May 70mm premiere print of TESB, there’s also the June general-release 70mm print. Might this 70mm print be useful as an additional source for a few shots where 4K80 isn’t ideal? The 70mm framing is cropped, of course, but maybe those areas could be filled with 4K80 if needed. Just a thought.
Sure, that could work. The cropping difference is not that huge I think - it probably wouldn’t be much more of a difference than the Technicolor prints vs. Eastman of Star Wars.
After many years as the lost 70mm print is lost, it’s finally found! Isn’t that right, Harmy.
Can’t wait for an update on this project!
