Quick update on this, I was never quite happy with the picture quality of this edit. The best quality source was also in 10-bit color, and I had a real hell of a time getting it to look right. I still don’t think it looks 100% right, with a blurry/smudgy quality to the colors.
I’ve now re-rendered the edit using a different source. It’s slightly lower quality, but the color was 8-bit and, to me, looks significantly better than the old version. The colors look right and it has a nice grain to it. I added a little brightness and a boost to the midtones to get it looking a little more vivid.
No other changes were made to the edit, other than redoing a couple of effects and upscales to replicate the old edit. So same thing, just looks better now.
I’m also toying with doing a B&W version that would give it the feel of an old Samurai movie with high contrast and deep blacks/bright whites. Not sure when I’ll get to do that, but could be fun!
