I'd like to believe that the temple itself is some sort of trophy of the Purge. It's lightened to show like some sort of monument, and symbol of the Jedi's defeat.
I'd also like to believe that no one in the empire, even the Emperor, has been able to enter into it, cause of a Froce protection or keeping spirits, pretty much like old Massassi temples guarded by Sith spirit (in Jedi Academy trilogy books).
Now, we can imagine that, after Coruscant has been took back by the Rebellion (becoming the New Republic), no one, again, has been able to enter into it, even Luke. After all, he's no part of the old Jedi Order and might not know how to open it.
Anyway, it's a story (and I'm not talking about my imagination) that worth a novel. It could be very interesting.
Concerning Lucas, I think he has done that just for the symbolic meaning. At the first plan, we see the falling statue of the Emperor (the fall of the Empire), and in the background, the Jedi Temple still there (the Jedi Order is still alive). It's a pretty good shot, if we don't compare it to the EU...
Agreed.
