It's been well known that an average of 20 units would be received per store (320,000 units/16,000 retailers). For these stores to have accepted preorders and then allow everyone to camp outside is just ridiculous. They should have allowed a top-out preorder count of 10-12 for release day and the rest be told that they would receive from second or third shipment. Then, after removing the preorder units from your inventory, you print up tickets for the rest that you give to the first however many people you have in line. And you make it clear to everyone else that they may as well go home because they're not getting one.

It's stupidity is what it is. On the part of the stores.

But they want to have a shortage on opening day. If there is no shortage, there won't be a rush to grab them, no camping out overnight, etc. This means no press coverage. Its all a part of hyping the system. It gets people who are sitting on the fence about buying one excited about it, not to mention the fans of the system. Plus, the lines on opening day may get your store in the news=free advertising. Basically, it benifits everyone but the consumers.

It's great for the system and great for Microsoft, but it's terrible PR for the stores. It does nothing for them.

there in lies my point. you get 20 in but you presell 100? The whole reason for buying a preorder is so you are guaranteed yours on opening day. I remember how I used to pre order games so that I didnt have to worry about being the first one in the store and I could just wait till after school when my mom was able to take me to the store because I had my preorder ticket and I new a copy would be waiting for me. Now its be the first one to preorder it to guarantee that you get one. defeats the whole purpose of preorders.

plus, the only reason they probably dont get in trouble for it (in terms of selling things you dont have) is because they fill the preorders first as they come in. But like this people didnt find out that their preorder was totally useless until it was too late to do anything about it so their only hope was that they could get it at a store that wasnt doing preorders or they had to wait until the next shipments.

If you're gonna do preorders when you're only getting 20 in then you limit it to 20. I think microsoft (or whatever company) should have to guarentee each store an X number (no pun intended) of systems (product). so they know how many preorders they can accept. though i think someone did say that Microsoft discouraged stores to presell the system. In that case, if you're still gonna presell the system then you should try to more accuratly predict how many you got in and error on the side of caution. in the above case if you say presold 25 then only 25 people are dissapointed not the 80 that are currently. If you were more conservative and went with say 15 presells you now have 5 happy customers that were waiting in line. and be smart about it. Its not like the systems came in while people were standing outside (in the cold) in front of your store. they've been there for at least a week. When i worked at Toys R Us we had the episode I figures\merchandise in our back storeroom for about a month before we were allowed to sell them. so you see there are thirty people waiting, you know you only have 5 to sell (or non to sell) tell the people so they can go home, or go to a new store. how does it help you or them to wait. not like they are gonna only buy it from you're store so its not like you're saving the sale for yourself by not telling them until midnight when they enter the store that you dont have a system for them. (also, limit 1 per customer, dont know if this was done or not, but it def should be in situations like this)

but as segaflip said, the first versions are the easiest to "play" with.

anyway, slightly changing the subject. Dont know if anyone here watches CSI but I happened to catch it last night (CSI: Miami) and the case was one I found interesting, but also thought it seemed like it was written by that Jack Thomson (think thats his name)

anyway, the premise was that there were these kids (college students) who were mimicking a game in real life (with the 'unoffical' backing of the developer to 'promote' sales) but the thing that irritated me most about it was that the game was blatently obviously meant to be GTA. The box that they showed for it looked exactly like the GTA box except that the name on it was different, but that wasnt that noticible until they actualy said the games name. The graphics looked just like GTA, the only difference was that this game had a set 'plot' that played through chronologically where the GTA games dont really have that.

now I dont really enjoy the GTA games that much, I've played them a little but really just driving around and get bored of them quite easily, so its not like i have some super love of the game that im defending it, but the statement that the show seemed to be making was what got me. It was essentially an hour of game cause violence.

If the show was spouting utter bull shit about some company making false accusations there would be more lawsuits, faster than...actually, the show would never have aired because it would have been pulled from the season lineup before its debut. Same as if it had a 'bad stereotype' about some 'minority' group. But its ok as it was because 'video games cause violence' and everyone knows its true.

such crap.

anyway, opinions, comments. really i just felt the need to vent about it some. Dont get me wrong i enjoyed the show from an entertainment standpoint but the 'politcal' crap it was spewing just really got to me cause i know its gonna convince some people that video games really do cause violence, what about the 'great game idea' that the show gave all of our emotionaly unbalanced pscyhopaths.

I would put most of the blame on Microsoft. I think they were too ambitious with their launch philosophy. There were far too few units produced, but they were going to release it come hell or highwater just to be "first". The PS3, from everything I've read, is a looong ways away, but Microsoft just had to rush this damn thing. Then you have their silly worldwide release thing which is pointless, unless of course you take into account that they perhaps think some negative feedback on the system's performance may dissuade people in Denmark from buying it. Why so many systems for Japan when everyone and their penis knows that they will sell only a fraction of what they are predicting/hoping? Oh well.

I'm sorry for you guys that wanted one and didn't get one. I'd be bummed too. Hopefully we can hook up soon for some Perfect Dark. Luckily my misery for 7 hours at walmart paid off.

Since when do the GTA games not have a plot?

I didnt mean they dont have a plot, i meant a linear plot. the game on the show had different levels. I realize GTA has missions but while some need a previous mission completed first, there are still multiple missions at the same time and there isnt necessarily one thing that needs to be done next. ie do A then do B then do C. obviously without this in the 'made up' game the csi team would never have been able to figure out the criminals next move.

anyway, my point was that while i have no love for the GTA games (they are all pretty much the same thing and not very entertaining imho) I dont agree that they cause violence and thought that the show wasnt very fair in that respect as it seemed to be putting that message out there.

One of the developers, the head guy, was the one behind supplying the kids with the assault rifles they were using to commit the crimes. he wanted to create hype for the game, i guess because controversy sells video games. and what better way to get controversy then to have some people mirror your game and go on a killing spree, at least that seemed to be his take on it.

Couldn't be any worse than 50's crap-fest of a movie.
