1989: Will People BUY Movies on VHS? | Film 89 | Retro Tech | BBC Archive:-

www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4g48YKs9RI - a 4 minute video from the official BBC Archive youtube channel.

The blurb: ‘"The market for sell-through video will be at least as big as the market for compact discs in two years’ time."

Would you want to own a physical copy of a movie? The popularity of The Video Collection - a range of classic movies released to buy on VHS - suggests that, if the price is right, the answer is a resounding yes.

Now, the major Hollywood studios are beginning to release their latest movies for sale, directly to the public, sometimes only months after their theatrical release. The Oscar-winning drama Rain Man will hit the shops and the rental stores simultaneously, and will be available for purchase at a fraction of the price of a typical new release. Will the public snap it up? Barry Norman chats to retailers, video distributors, video rental stores and the general public to find out.
