Austria Turns on Arnold Schwarzenegger

Author

From IMDB news bytes -

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's refusal to grant former gang leader Stanley 'Tookie' Williams clemency has sparked outrage in his native Austria. On Monday, Schwarzenegger refused to overturn the Crips gang founder's death sentence, and he was executed in the early hours of yesterday morning. And his refusal to spare the life of Williams - who was convicted of killing four people - has sparked harsh criticism from people across Austria. Leaders of the country's opposition Green Party are calling for the Terminator star to be stripped of his Austrian citizenship - a demand rejected by Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel as "absurd" despite his government's opposition to the death penalty. And in Graz, Schwarzenegger's hometown, local Greens are planning to file a petition to remove Schwarzenegger's name from the city's Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium. A Christian political group suggests it be renamed to honour Williams.

Crazy old world, eh?

Hey, let's rename the stadium after that guy who killed some people and founded one of the biggest and most notorious gangs in America. I mean, he did write some pretty good books. Crazy indeed.

Bizarre. But... If Austria denies his citizenship, he could change nationality and become the president! Just like Hitler did!

As long as Arnold doesn't have any of his past films altered with CGI I'll be happy.

The only one I can see them touching would be the original Terminator film, with the stop motion terminator.

While I believe capital punishment is wrong, Austria is one of the last places on the planet that should be criticizing someone's failure to stop an execution...

Nope. As U.S. law currently stands, a President can only be a person born in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Nobody born outside the U.S., including those who have rescinded their citizenship or had their citizenship rescinded by their native country, can be president of the U.S.

'Tis the law. Governors are a different thing. Just need to have a certain time period of legal citizenship.

I've heard something, however, about a group who wish to change the law so that if you've been a US citizen for at least 25 years, you could run for president.

And that is one Constitutional amendment that will NEVER get through. I give my fellow citizens a lot of credit here. Whether or not Ahnuld would be a good president is irrelevant. There is no way 2/3 of all states would ratify to allow naturalized citizens the Big Chair. California, New York and maybe Mass. and Oregon would go for that. Nobody else. Not even liberal ol' New Hampshire. They're too proud of the electoral process as it stands.

Of course there are rumblings. But the process takes so long and would be debated from here to eternity. I don't think this would even be a ballot option during my lifetime.

Close. A person is also considered a natural-born citizen (and thus eligible for Presidency) if they're born to American citizen parents overseas, or in a U.S. possession with at least one citizen parent. There are some other small provisos, but these rules make sure that, for instance, my wife (born in Berlin when her dad was in the USAF stationed in Germany) and people like her are full citizens at birth.

I believe Darth Enzo is correct. This of course still leaves no opening for Arnie. Even if he could run, there is no way he would get elected.

Yeah yEah, we know, but I can totally see an amendment happening. Anyway, what's to say somebody born in the States has more right to be president than somebody who moved to the country at a young age and has lived there for decades? Isn't that kind of going against the whole American dream ethos? Personally, I don't actually care that much, I'm just saying - these days, does somebody really need to exit their mother's womb in America to BE an American?

I was sort of joking, but I do see that too. It'll be extra-funny if Lou Ferrigno is the democratic candidate running against him.

Good point. Wasn't thinking of those that are living and working overseas while maintaining their U.S. citizenship or those in the military overseas. Good catch. Still saves us for having to worry about Schwarzy as prez, though.

Actually, I've been hearing serious rumblings of Warren Beatty. If he runs on the Bulworth platform he could actually take Arnie. Whether or not he could actually govern is another question. But wouldn't we all love to see the 70-year-old-white-hip-hop candidate?

That would be nice to see, Bullworth versus T-1000.
