The 2013 DVDs were indeed the 2011 Special Edition version (the same as the 2011 blu ray release).Thank you for informing me! Maybe I will buy them someday, if I can get them on the cheap. Somehow I just really get a kick out of owning (and watching) Star Wars on DVD, as opposed to Blu-Ray or even UHD Blu-Ray. It just feels more like I actually own it (no doubt in part because it is so much easier to archive for yourself). I also just appreciate the “magic” of anamorphic widescreen. So clever.
Yes, I got the 2013 OT combo set with each film on Blu-ray and DVD at a church sale several months ago for something like $4. I can confirm that the DVDs are the same versions that are on the 2011 Blu-rays. The menus are similar to those discs as well. These were actually the first DVDs on the market following the release of the Blu-ray. I don’t think George wanted multiple differing versions of these films in print at the same time so all prior DVD releases were taken OOP after the initial BD sets came out. There were a few years where none of the Star Wars films had any DVD available on store shelves. Only Blu.
It was embarrassing enough that George kept the 2004 versions in print for as long as he did, given all of their glaring visual and audio errors.
