Hey DAYV

You said you were gonna review Polar Express but I didn't see a review? So would you review that. Also, would you review The Muppet Christmas Carol: 50th Anniversary Edition(1), (the new one) I have the old one and am planning on getting the new one cause it's widescreen and the old version is full frame Also, another request is Charlie And The Chocolate Factory 2-Disc Deluxe Edition. The one I really want is The Muppet Christmas Carol, because I have Charlie, just want to see what you thought of it, I haven't gotten to the special features yet. Just remembered, can you also review Sin City: Recut & Extended Edition(1). I asked for this for Christmas so I want to make sure it's worth getting. (hopefully my mom already ordered it cause it comes out the 13th) Okay, I'm really gonna stop editing this, I swear. Just rememberd another DVD. Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, there are two versions of the DVD. Which one is better, the one by Sony (new one) or the other one. If you review all these that would be awesome. The two with (1) after them are the two that are 'high priority' so to speak. Ok, hopefully I'm done editing this.
Thanks, I appreciate it.

But I have read stuff on the net that says the aspect ratios used in the 1st special edition were aproved by Kubrick himself.

They were... at the time. Kubrick was very unhappy with how his films wound up looking on video, which is why post-2001, he refused to shoot anything in scope aspect ratios, instead shooting flat and insisting that all video transfers be done open matte. If you watch the so-called multi-aspect ratio version of Dr. Strangelove, it becomes very obvious that this was not the director's true intention, as the composition of some shots in that version has a tendency to take you out of the moviegoing experience. Kubrick was simply doing what he thought was best when it came to transferring his films to an inferior format.

I bought the 50th Anniversary edition of TMCC because I didn't want to buy the fullscreen version. That being said, the new version is somewhat galling, because the widescreen version omits the song "When Love Is Gone", which I consider integral to the film.
Check out my thread here, where I'm trying to get someone to do a transfer of the widescreen LD, which includes the song.

Other than the omitting of "When Love Is Gone", do you feel that it is worth it? Thanks.

Wait, didn't Sin City come out months ago, like, back in the summer? Did they release a special edition or something?

Yes. It's priced reasonably, and includes both the fullscreen and widescreen versions, along with Brian Henson's commentary, which is only on the fullscreen version. The special features are throwaways, but I doubt that Disney archived much on this film.

One last question. Just to clarify. This version doesn't have "When Love Is Gone" at all, or the widescreen version on the disc doesn't have it? Also, I love the quick responses. So great.

I'm probably going to get the 50th Anniversary Edition. Even though "When Love Is Gone" isn't in the widescreen version, I'm all for OAR. And the song is in the fullscreen version which is on the disc, so I can still listen to it if I want. Thanks for the info Gun & DAVY.

No prob. On a side note, my kids got me the King Kong/Son of Kong/Mighty Joe Young pack from Best Buy for Christmas. I'm a happy dad.

what a dumb*** DVD. Why in god's name do you have the song in the Fullscreen version and not in the Widescreen? That makes no sense at all.

Yes it does: So that people will buy both versions and the studios will make more $$$$.

Both versions are on the same disc, Adam, it's just that the full screen version includes the song and commentary, and the widescreen version (on side B of the disc, I assume) does not include the song or commentary. So if you want to hear the song or the commentary, you have to put up with full screen. Kinda crappy, but not too bad I guess. When a company puts both versions on one disc, I don't think you can accuse them of seeing dollar signs. We'll save that accusation for next christmas, when they release a revised special edition which includes the song in widescreen...

War does not make one great.

OK, I assumed that you were talking about two separate versions of it.

It could have been worse. TMCC was shot flat, so pan-and-scan isn't near the debacle it could have been. I wish that they had transferred the longer cut in widescreen, but I've already made a plea in the fan edits section for someone to do this.

I'M GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE A LITTLE TIME OFF FROM THE REVIEWS THIS WEEK. I KNOW THAT I'M BEHIND, BUT I'LL CATCH UP. RIGHT NOW I'M VERY SICK. I HAVE SEVERE PNEUMONIA, AND I'VE ALSO BEEN THROWING UP BLOOD. I'M REALLY HOPING TO GET BACK TO THE DOCTOR SOON. AS SOON AS I'M OVER THIS I'LL GET THE REVIEWS OUT.
