Fondest Memory from the OT Days

Please share your fondest memories from those heady OT days ('77 to '83) when there were no SEs, PT or Jar Jar.....a time when Vader was the baddest mother****** in the galaxy, when Solo stared down death in Greedo's blaster and blew him away first, when Yoda really was the wisest alien in the galaxy, when we could watch the OT and dream of what Episodes 1, 2 and 3 would be like....

For me, it was playing the old Atari vector Star Wars game in the arcades of the early 80s. No game has ever given me that grand feeling as that one. I never got far, but that didn't matter. I was Luke Skywalker and I was gonna blast that Death Star.

Please share, people....keep that spirit alive.

Well, I first discovered discovered "Star Wars" in the form of an old VHS copy of "Return of the Jedi" when I was about 3 years old.....which would have been around......1991 or 1992. Does that count? I still have a lot of fond pre-SE memories, like being the only kindergartener at my school who had even HEARD of Star Wars.

I think my favourite memory of the OT was when I was 8, probably, in 1991, and my dad rented all three from the library. It was the first time that I'd watched any of them all the way through. I watched them start to finish, but fell asleep during Jedi, so I woke up the next morning to watch it.

Watching the end of Jedi on a Saturday morning. That's my memory. I wanted to know what happened!!

I fell into the hype in '95 at age 9 when the "One Last Time" Faces boxset was to be released. I'd already seen enough parodies (Muppet Babies, anyone?) and had been indoctrinated through pop culture to know vaguely what it was about. I knew who Luke and R2-D2 and Yoda and Darth Vader, etc. were, even though I didn't know of the Luke/Vader relationship. I awoke on Christmas morning to find the movie boxset and my couch covered in a neat line of the new Kenner action figures: Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, R2-D2, C-3PO, and Chewbacca. I never looked back.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I was 5 & 8 years old when I saw Star Wars & ESB, and though I feintly remember seeing Star Wars in the theater that summer, I do remember seeing ESB in the theater in 1980, and it was way too dark for me, have times changed!

But my favorite memory was I remember it came on HBO in February 1983, and finally watching it again after 6 years with my older brother. The next day was a snow day and we were off from school, and I watched in the morning, the afternoon, and at night (Those were the day when the 5 star movies would be shown 3 times a day)

That year I watched it everytime it was on cable, and never got sick it, even to this day. I probably had to watch it atleast hundred times that year. I have to say, being born in 1972, was the perfect age to grow up with Star Wars.

I was also 5 years old (almost 6) when I saw ANH for the first time in 77' with my dad, it was the first movie I remember seeing in a theater, before that my parents were afraid any movie they took me too I wouldn't sit through.

I'm not sure if I blinked once through the movie, my dad was so impressed, that as soon as the toys came out, he took me to a local store (that no longer exists) and bought me 5 or 6 of the figures, then I remember going to Burger King and buying the drinking glasses, bed sheets, posters...ect. all of which I still have to this day....I ended up going about 10-12 more times with family and friends that summer, great memories.

I wanted to take my 4 yr old son to see one Star Wars movie in a theater (in memory of my dad) but ROTS being PG-13 and my son being younger and more hyper than I was...I decided to go by myself first...I never ended up taking him because I just didn't think he'd sit through it....He still doesn't, but loves the DVD, he's as much into Star Wars now as I was...Now I have to deal with my wife rolling her eyes at us....it's worth it.

I live in Brisbane (East Coast of Australia, capital of Queensland), and I went on a holiday with my family around Australia at the age of 7. It was the 1990/1991 Christmas holidays, and we were visiting a family of friends in Perth (West Coast of Australia, capital of Western Australia). Their kids were crazy about Star Wars - kept singing the theme song, going on about this 'Darth Vader' fella, and lightsabers, etc. Anyway, they basically forced me and my little brother to watch it on the second last day we were there. I loved it. It blew me away, and I could understand their obsession from then on. I didn't have time to see Empire Strikes Back, which they told me a bit about, but they didn't even mention Return of the Jedi AT ALL. I didn't know it existed. For the remainder of the trip, the whole 8000 km back home, I was left wondering what was going to happen next. I was really excited. Funnily enough, in this place with really tall tree-houses, another kid that I met started talking to me about all the cool stuff in the Empire Strikes Back. And then he told me about 'the third one', which I didn't even believe existed. He kept going on about Ewoks, Imperial Walkers and a green lightsaber and I didn't believe him. Nonetheless, I took it on board. Anyway, soon after getting home (probably some 19 days later), Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back came on TV, so we recorded it (since then I was dumb enough to record over them with the '97 SEs). When I heard Vader claim to be Anakin's father, I was blown away. I didn't believe him. I thought he was lying. Well anyway, seeing as it never came on TV till a lot later, I was left wondering whether or not there even was a 'third one'. I was left on this cliffhanger ending for two years: is Vader Luke's father, does Han Solo live, does Luke become a Jedi? Then, when I was in the video shop, I found it: Return of the Jedi. I HAD to see it. I rented it out, and I was blown away. I couldn't believe it. Vader WAS Luke's father. Yoda dies. Jabba was cool. The forest moon of Endor was cool. Luke was Leia's sister! Vader sacrifices himself to save Luke from the Emperor. Awesome. I watched it over and over again. Then it finally came on TV, so I could record it and watch it whenever I wanted. Then the '97 SEs came out (which, funnily enough, I wasn't pissed off about) and I saw the new 'A New Hope' at the cinema, and my brother bought the VHS set.
MTFBWY. Always.

One of my favourite memories was a time in the 80s (84 85 ??? cant remember the exact year) I would have been in my very early teens, me and four friends, went to our local cinema to see the "Star Wars Triple Bill" the first time we saw the films back to back, we had a great time we got there early in the afternoon, the cinema was packed, and as soon as the 20th Century Fox logo started up to begin the fun, a big cheer went up, it was cool, there was like a 15 minute break between each movie, where we could have stuff like ice cream and soft drinks, and at the end of Jedi and big cheer went up around the cinema...

One of my best memories was the various sleep overs I would have with my friends. In 1995, I had by best friend spend the night and we watched ANH, ESB, and ROTJ all in one sitting. We slept on the sofabed and just watched Star Wars all night long. I was 12 at the time and a TOTAL Star Wars junkie. I still am of course. I don't think that she was as in to Star Wars as I was, but that's okay. She had never seen them, but she has seen that stupid Ewok movie or whatever. Huh. I think she liked it.

God those where the days. I remember laying in bed one night and thinking, "Wow, Return of the Jedi... that's the last one. Star Wars's final movie. The story of 3 movies. Ahhh..."

In 1997, I was hyped up on the re-release, excuse me, the re-altering of Star Wars and wanted to listen to the sound track so bad. My dad had the original LP soundtrack from 1977 and 1980, so I took those records and recorded them on to tape. I listened to that so much, and the funny part was that the record skipped during the Cantina song, that when I hear the song on my CD now I can't help but hear where the record skipped every time.

as we are reminicing, I just have so many great memories, of the razmatazz of it all and then seeing the original Star Wars in the first week, and the big queues to get in and excitement of wanting to see it as many times as possible, then the excitement of waiting for Empire and Jedi and all that surrounded it, to the collecting of the O.T figures and the ships and playsets, I had pratically everything at one time, the funny thing i made loads of friends at school because of our shared interest of Star Wars and the O.T and still the 22-28 etc years i still know some of them, so we can still talk of those days of when it was just the Original Trilogy and what we did in those days.....

Since I wasn't around in the original trilogy days, I shall recall my greatest Star Wars memory generally. After seeing TPM, ANH, ESB, and ROTJ in 99', I eagerly waited the three years for AOTC to come out. I kept up with TF.N all that time and always tried to find the latest spy reports (that is, when TF.N actually used to HAVE spy reports). And of course finally the day arrived and I remember May 16, 2002 as one of my happiest days. Even when ROTS came out this year, it wasn't as fond of an experience to see for some reason. AOTC for me was an exhilerating experience. And yes, I cried when I got home from it, as much as it may astonish. I then went to see it five more times over the next few weeks. Ahh, those were the days!

One of the best memories I actually have is with my brother. We watched the laser disk endlessly to the point where we know where all the breaks are when it is time to flip the disk over. Even now when we watch it on tape or burned DVD we always shout out what Luke says during the second time to flip. It's in the trash compacter scene when Luke shouts out "Hey open the pressure hatch to, where are we? Unit number 628-3827!" My brother and I would shout out those last four digits with our fists in the air as if it were a sports cheer, "3-8-2-7!" Time to flip the disk!

The other thing we would do play on our neighbor's trampoline. We would bounce each other with that double bounce trick that sends the other person high into the air, and we would take turns pretending to be Luke when he fell down Cloud City. Granted our fall wasn't as long, but it was still fun.

Ahhh...it was great. We spent the whole summer of 1997 playing Super Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi on his SNES in his room.

He also collected a TON of the space craft toys (there was this great Toys R Us at Navel Kadena...we lived in Japan at the time) and we bought so many of those. I only bought the X-Wing and the Shuttle Tyderium, but my brother had a whole butt load including the orange Cloud City cars. Unfortunatly he played with them in the tub and they got all...soapy, and the stickers fell off...and he lost all the little people inside. But mine were kept nice and are still on their stands. I loves my X-Wing!

I'm the bigger nerd in Star Wars than my brother, but those are some mighty fine memories.

My favorite OT memory was when I was first getting into the movies in 1990. I was in 5th grade at that point. My mom had told me she bought a bunch of Star Wars figures when I was really little and they were hiding in the house somewhere. We all went on a wild goose chase trying to find all the cool Star Wars figures. One day, I remember I found C3PO's LEG!!! It was funny that I found the tiny leg before the rest of him. Hehe. I was disapointed to find some of the toys in not so great shape since apparently I had thrown them around when I was like 4 or 5.
George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

I'm not old enough to have been aroundin the early 80s heyday myself, but to me Star Wars was just as important as anything else when I was 8. No one i've met really seems to remember, but TBS used to show the Trilogy at Christmas time for about 3-4 years ('93-'96; perhaps longer, I can't remember when they stopped it) but I would always so thankful to have it during that time because no other Christmas movie on tv ever made me feel more like it really was Christmas time than Star Wars (I didn't have any of the VHS tapes; in fact, the only Star Wars VHS I have ever owned is recorded from those airings)

But one thing in particular will always be with me from that was that when it would cut back in from commercial, it would always say (in addition to a little graphic) in a loud and important voice, "...and now back to the Star Wars Trilogy"

That's the hardest part about Christmas now, today everything is different. There's no action. I have to sit around and watch old Christmas movies that everyone else watches. Can't even get Star Wars anymore. It's bad enough that if it is back on it's the special editions....but at least now, thanks to this forum, I can still ensure that Star Wars will always be on for the holidays.
