But you know, as well as I, that there HAS to be more to it than that. Characters don't simply cease to exist before, after, and between each film, therefore the EU is allowable.

Of course. That school of thought has led to FANTASTIC cinematic moments. I'm thinking:

Scarlett
Return to Oz
Caddyshack II
The Return of Jafar
More American Graffiti
Speed 2: Cruise Control
The Color of Money
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
EDIT: Grease 2 ... don't forget that crapfest either

I'm specifically leaving out franchise-killers like Batman & Robin or Rocky V and focusing on "blood-from-a-stone" first sequels that never should have happened. Any more dead horses we can beat?

I can't wait for that sequel "The Passion of the Christ: God's Vengeance." Throw in a resurrected Judas in a robot suit doing space battle with his old nemesis The Nazarene and it'll outgross the original.

Yeah, you do have a point. How about "Passion of the Christ II: The Return of Jesus."

Come on, dude. Is that really fair? Listing the names of crappy sequels is like shooting apples in a barrel! Surely, the Empire Strikes Back must have been one of the most successful sequels ever. Your point still stands, though. That's why there are backstories in movies, and people's imaginations to fill in the blanks. In fact, people's imaginations filling the blanks is the reason that EU exists.

I kinda respect EU, though usually not all of it. Mostly because it has influenced things in the movies. Like Coruscant. Can't think of anything else, though...well, at least not in the OT.

The one thing I have somewhat of an objection to in the EU is the return of Palpatine's spirit, which he uses to attempt to take over the Republic again through someone elses body. Despite that fact that it's official canon, it sounds too similar to that SuperShadow crap.

dark empire was a cool comic in its time one that was supposed to make you forget the marvel comics version

The EU is like anything else, it has good bits (Zhan) and some bad stuff(KJA, Traviss).

I really respect the work done by Dr. Saxton and Mike Wong for the SW universe. It really makes the universe as impressive as it looks.

Dr. Saxton is this physicist who has written several star wars technical books dealing with, you guessed it, the techinal aspects of star wars, and he examines them in GREAT detail. He also has written the technical commentaries over at TF.N. He's one of the primary supporters of the Endor Holocaust.

Does he talk much of the speed racers in Jedi? I'd be kind of curious to know what he said about it.

A little off topic, but I've got this cool Empire sketchbook by Joe Johnston, Ralp McQuarrie & Nilo Rodis-Jamero. It's really amazing the amount of detail that goes into the sketches, and I'm sure research. I should scan a few and share them sometime.

And ... Hey! I liked "The Color of Money".
