Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Revenge of the Sith - Extended Edition)

artwork

Introduction

Hello there,
I am excited to share with you a fan-edit I made that combines the final arc of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (S7:E9-12) with Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, resulting in a movie that should serve as the finale of the Clone Wars Show. What sets this edit apart from others with similar aims, is mainly the utilization of an edited/trimmed down version of RotS, and a unique story structure.

If you are interested, please leave a comment or send me a PM.

Intention

This is NOT another Revenge of the Sith 4+ Hour Cut.

My intention for this movie was not just to combine Clone Wars with RotS, but also to edit and trim RotS accordingly so that the final movie is more streamlined and engaging. In other words, I wanted to extend the already amazing Clone Wars finale by mixing it with the best of RotS. That’s also why the title is “The Clone Wars (Revenge of the Sith - Extended Edition)” and not the other way around. RotS takes up a larger portion, though.

In the beginning, I just wanted to use Siliconmaster’s Revenge of the Sith: Rebalanced for this purpose, as it is one of my favorite edits of RotS. However, I ultimately made more changes to that as well, to better fit my story. Changes included re-adding scenes/dialogue, removing other scenes, and some other minor modifications. Still, Siliconmaster’s edit served as the main source for most alterations done to RotS. The material from the Clone Wars episodes were almost left untouched, apart from transitions, of course.

There are three things I want to highlight, that make this edit stand out:

  • This edit is structured to have a prologue, a main story, and an epilogue. Both, prologue and epilogue consist of only material from the Clone Wars show.
  • Order 66 is shown from Ahsoka’s perpective first. It’s more impactful because we as the viewers can relate to Ahsoka more because she does not know what’s exactly happening and how widespread this is. It is only when she discovers the whole truth, that we get to see the execution of Order 66 in the rest of the galaxy.
  • Apart from the various changes in RotS to improve the pacing and narrative, a portion of the ending was cut to make the main story end on somewhat of a cliffhanger: The last thing we see is Anakin’s transformation to Darth Vader. However, the birth of the twins, how they are brought to their future care takers, or Padmé’s funeral are not shown. We are previously told that they “are losing her”, but no explanation is given as to why or whether she or her child (here it is never said that she has twins) can be saved.

Additional Info

  • 1080p (~5GB)
  • Runtime: ~200 min

Special Thanks

Thanks to Siliconmaster for his excellent edit of Episode III called “Star Wars - Revenge of the Sith: Rebalanced” (fanedit.org).
Thanks also to @renderdriver whose artwork served as the basis for the one seen here.

Changes

Below are all the things in which this edit differs from Episode III and the Clone Wars episodes.
Note: Alterations in Episode III taken over from Siliconmaster’s Star Wars - Revenge of the Sith: Rebalanced are included but marked with “(*)”.

  • Added the “Star Wars Main Title & A Galaxy Divided” score for the Clone Wars title sequence
  • Added a philosophical quote, typical for Clone Wars episodes
  • S7:E9 of the Clone Wars, up until the scene where Ahsoka and Anakin separate, acts as a prologue. It then transitions to “A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…”
  • Kept the original film name and opening crawl of Episode III
  • Cut Obi-Wan saying “Let them pass between us”
  • Trimmed Buzz droid sequence (partly (*))
  • Adjusted dialogue between Obi-Wan and Anakin (*)
  • Cut Obi-Wan’s acrobatics during the landing scene on Grievous’s ship (*)
  • Trimmed dialogue and action as they prepare to find Palpatine (*)
  • Trimmed some dialogue before and during the Dooku fight (*)
  • Anakin now barely hesitates when killing Dooku (*)
  • Added a transition from Anakin saying “His faith will be the same as ours” to Ahsoka’s landing on Mandalore
  • Added a transition from Gar Saxon talking to Almec to bombardment of Grievous’ ship
  • Cut Grievous saying “Prepare for attack”
  • Cut Anakin saying “Elevator’s not working”
  • Cut Grievous saying “Activate ray shields” (the whole ray shield scene was not present in (*))
  • Made various little changes in the Grievous fight/escape scene (partly (*))
  • Slightly changed the dialogue between Obi-Wan and Anakin as they arrive at the senate building
  • Cut Jar Jar’s line (*)
  • Adjusted Anakin’s conversation with Padmé (when she tells him that she is pregnant) (*)
  • Moved Grievous’ Utapau arrival and Anakin’s nightmare scene to later (*)
  • Trimmed dialogue about the prophecy between Yoda, Mace Windu and Obi-Wan (*)
  • Cut Anakin talking to Padmé about the state of the republic, mainly for pacing purposes
  • Added a transition from Yoda’s preparation to leave for Kashyyyk to Ahsoka, Rex, Bo-Katan on Mandalore (“You must find Maul”)
  • Added a transition between Clone Wars S7:E9 and S7:E10 (when Ahsoka meets Maul)
  • Added a transition between Ahsoka saying “We’ve lost them” and Grievous’ arrival on Utapau
  • Added a transition between Sideous saying that he will soon have a new apprentice and Anakin’s nightmare scene. The conversation with Padmé on the balcony was cut (*)
  • Cut scene where Anakin talks to Yoda. Instead, he goes from speaking to Padmé about his nightmare directly to seeing Palpatine at the opera
  • Cut Yoda almost getting shot on Kashyyyk
  • Added a transition between the beginning of the Kashyyyk Battle and Ahsoka on Mandalore talking to Obi-Wan via hologram
  • Added a transition between Jesse’s scream and Anakin talking to Obi-Wan before he goes to Utapau
  • Replaced the second nightmare by a reversed establishing shot from Attack of the Clones (*)
  • Trimmed the ending of Anakin saving Padmé’s conversation (*)
  • Trimmed Lizard reveal on Utapau (*)
  • Trimmed some lines of Grievous (*)
  • Cut Obi-Wan’s weird close-up shot (“Oh I don’t think so”)
  • Added a transition between Cody picking up Obi-Wan’s lightsaber and Ahsoka interrogating Almec
  • Added a transition between Maul’s speech to his Mandalorian soldiers and Obi-Wan’s continuing fight with Grievous
  • Moved scenes that happen before that in Episode III to later
  • Grievous’ death transitions to Mandalorians complaining about the republic occupation
  • Added a transition between Clone Wars S7:E10 and S7:E11
  • Added transitions back and forth between Clone Wars and Episode III during the council briefing. I took the liberty to make it so that word of Grievous’ death has not yet reached Cody and therefore also not the other council members. The only information they have at that time is that Obi-Wan has engaged the enemy. This is crucial as it makes the pacing later on so much better. I.e. the “calm before the storm” is not interrupted by a fight scene between Obi-Wan and Grievous.
  • Added a transition between Rex saying “You didn’t tell them what Maul said about Skywalker” and Anakin talking to Palpatine before he reveals himself as the Sith Lord
  • Added some background music to the conversation between Anakin and Palpatine, as it improved the transition from Clone Wars
  • Added a transition between Palpatine’s reveal and Anakin informing Windu (By that time they know about Grievous’ death)
  • Added a transition between Windu’s departure and Ahsoka’s farewell to Bo-Katan
  • Added a transition between Maul meditating while locked up and Padmé sitting by herself at home
  • Removed Palpatine speaking during the scene where Anakin broods in the council chambers. Used soundtrack music to bridge the hole to keep the same cuts (*)
  • Altered the Palpatine/Windu fight as well as Anakin’s fall to the Dark Side. See (*) for more information
  • Added a transition between “We shall have peace” and Maul shockingly opening his eyes and Ahsoka feeling that something has happened to Anakin. Note that not all of the lines heard by Ahsoka were actually spoken in the preceding scene. I chose not to reinsert them, as I envision Ahsoka forming a mental connection to Anakin in that moment - sensing not necessarily his spoken words, but his thoughts. The lines from Windu and Palpatine could similarly represent voices in Anakin’s mind.
  • Added a transition back to Episode III where Anakin marches on the Jedi temple
  • Cut Palpatine saying “Commander Cody”
  • Added a transition from Episode III to Clone Wars when Palpatine says “Execute Order 66”. We first see Order 66 play out from Ahsoka’s perpective first
  • Added a transition between Ahsoka discovering that the entire Grand Army of the Republic is affected, and Order 66 in RotS
  • Order 66 plays out without sound effects, only music. Some scenes were trimmed slighlty to make it fit better to the soundtrack. The transition before worked better that way, also it makes the vents even more tragic
  • Adjusted exchange between Obi-Wan and Yoda in the temple (*)
  • Adjusted reunion between Anakin and Padmé (*)
  • Cut Anakin saying “This is the end for you my master!” (*)
  • Shortened the end of Episode III quite a bit because I preferred an open ending. The last thing we see is Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader and you hear his breathing (this ending was inspired by the Phantom Edit)
  • Added short credits listing only the main cast before transitioning to the epilogue
  • S7:E12 of The Clone Wars acts as an epilogue. This gives Ahsoka and the Clones their own dedicated and heartbreaking ending

I have several different edits of this film, but yours sounds like an interesting and different take on it.

Have you thought of incorporating the clip on YouTube by Hello There called Anakin vs Obi-Wan Clone Wars Animation? It looks so close to actual Clone Wars animation and is simply superb. You should check it out!

Battle of the Heroes - Clone Wars Fan Animation

What do you think?

That is a very interesting idea!
In my opinion, it would be a bit tricky to incorporate it here, though. Throughout the edit you mostly see Anakin and Obi-Wan in live-action. Switching to animation right at the climax would feel a little jarring to me. Also, I like how RotS intercuts this fight with the Yoda-Emperor fight. Keeping this while only having one of the fights be animated would be odd.

However, I believe your idea would work perfectly in a Clone Wars-Only project like this one for example.

Do you agree?
