Of course. That school of thought has led to FANTASTIC cinematic moments. I'm thinking:
Scarlett
Return to Oz
Caddyshack II
The Return of Jafar
More American Graffiti
Speed 2: Cruise Control
The Color of Money
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
EDIT: Grease 2 ... don't forget that crapfest either
I'm specifically leaving out franchise-killers like Batman & Robin or Rocky V and focusing on "blood-from-a-stone" first sequels that never should have happened. Any more dead horses we can beat?
I can't wait for that sequel "The Passion of the Christ: God's Vengeance." Throw in a resurrected Judas in a robot suit doing space battle with his old nemesis The Nazarene and it'll outgross the original.

But you know, as well as I, that there HAS to be more to it than that. Characters don't simply cease to exist before, after, and between each film, therefore the EU is allowable.

Yeah, you do have a point. How about "Passion of the Christ II: The Return of Jesus."
