fan edit: removing 'the message' from disney films?

Author
Time
has anyone given any thought into editing some disney 'classics' and removing the message that disney preaches? usually this message bogs down the movie and distracts from the movie experience. one recent example being the chicken little movie. in it they interrupt an alien invasion to have a father-son talk, along with at least 10-20 mins of 'you should talk to your father' dialog... or what about removing the musical part of these movies? all the silly songs, etc?

just wondering if anyone would be interested if i undertook such a task. altho i dont know which movie to start with. i havent seen bambi or pinnochio or aladdin etc in quite a while.

i'm not bitter, really! but if you think this is crazy, please tell me.

Great idea. Insert some autopsy and road accident footage, porn and selections from "Death Scenes II" in their place. That will make them less preachy and restore that true Disney spirit that you want so much.

And that dreadful music by this hack Alan Menken must go, indeed. Replace it with some Marilyn Moronson or just random white noise. Not that there's any difference between the two.

Of course, you'll need covers for them - Ogrish and Rotten have much material that should suffice for their design. You can call them "+he Dark G0+H Edi+ions". In fact, why not reedit every frame to make all characters bleach-skinned and dressed in black leather? That will be truly "hrrrdcrrre".

Sarcasm from the last two posts aside... It really couldn't be done, at least I don't think so. Disney films especially have the 'message' interwoven fairly tight with the plot. I think there may be a couple of films where they may be over-the-top in regards to pointing out the 'message', and they might be able to be trimmed if you want to have a go at that. The thing is that even with those films, you wouldn't be able to remove the message and all the song-and-dance numbers. The film would be severely hacked up afterwards and not make much sense. I suppose you could always take a crack at the numerous Disney sequels. They'd probably look better after a handful of edits. Then again, I am of the mind that most Disney sequels shouldn't exist.

Please don't take offense to what I've written. It's merely my opinion on what you've suggested.

some disney flicks have songs that are necessary for the plot. other times there are gratuitious songs that are in the movie only for the sake of having songs...it's these latter songs that could probably be removed.

I think Tarzan would benefit greatly from not having the songs in it, but that would be way too hard to do.

I like the songs from Tarzan. But I do think it would greatly benefit from removing the characters of Turk and the elephant. They're worse than Jar Jar. Or at least cut them down considerably.

thank you for all the feedback!
i'm a bad guy for wanting to change a disney 'classic'

i guess i'll have to review and play with some disney movies before i can decide on what to do... yes, those talking animals/silverware get very annoying!

there is a technique for editing, wherein the user has to have the dvd or file for it to work. the only thing you distribute is a timing (like a subtitle) file that contains an index of times. it says what part to cut, what part to play when... i remember the clearplay people were using it... http://www.clearplay.com/ "Filters offensive content by playing movies with custom software on a personal computer."

has anyone tried this type of editing? the only thing i've seen of is the open source mplayer/mencoder's EDL (edit decision list) feature... www4.mplayerhq.hu . are there other, more popular formats? would anyone be interested in using this instead of distributing a whole movie?

The only thing that needs to be cut from Disney films is Eisner.

Agreed.

Fortunately, Roy Disney won his battle.

Eisner's gone, Iger's in charge now. Hopefully it won't be "Eisner 2.0". Roy didn't win his battle sadly. He was bought out. He's got his board seat back, but who knows what that'll accomplish. The battle won't be won until the day they reopen the doors of Disney Feature Animation.

I could see some sequel edits, and maybe some of the recent films. Just leave Walt's alone.

Roy Disney is also Director Emeritus. Basically, he has a say in Disney's path.

I hate to say it, but that's not what it means.

"Emeritus" - Retired but retaining an honorary title corresponding to that held immediately before retirement.

Basically, he's a figurehead on the board there to keep people like me quiet. Iger's said he will listen to Roy's advice, but other than that, he technically has no power. I have great faith in Roy, and believe he wouldn't have backed down like he did without good reason. There's something up his sleave, but it will be awhile before it's played, I know.

Slightly off topic, but regarding this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6467584868
It says that it's an original boxed set, not a bootleg - but everything about it looks dodgy. Anyone know if there was indeed an official Disney box set released in Asia?

Edit: Another one:

"Region Free"? Hmmm...

There are a lot of cheapo versions of DVDs from Asia for sale on eBay. They're usually official issues and not bootlegs, but they're typically single-layer discs rather than the full dual-layer ones that get released in the US. A friend of mine got the entire series of both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager for around $100 total, Asian import editions.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Anybody think there's something to what was in the Da Vinci Code about Disney putting Priory of Sion and Divine Feminine messages in his films deliberately? A "Disney Code" if you will ...?

I doubt it--99.9 percent of the populace wouldn't pick up on the symbology. Plus some reading I've done indicates that a lot of the talk about the Divine Feminine stuff was really overdone in the Da Vinci Code. Interesting book, but a lot of it is simply speculation.
