The Original Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 33

What if Luke’s robotic hand looked like the sequel trilogy hand?

Author

Okay but how would you actually do that? Are you volunteering, to model, texture, animate, and rotoscope it?

I’m an idealist, not an artist.

If I could though, I would. I would do soooooo much and I’m not just talking about Star Wars. Just a shame I have no talent to back it up

I’ve tried before, was stuck paying 5K for a designer course with false promises. Never did get to create video games on Unity Engine.

For those interested in reintegrating the Tosche Station scene, this fan film opens on an establishing shot that could work well for it, making the place seem a little less barren. Granted, it’s a bit too cluttered, and I would remove most of the ships in the sky, but besides that you just need to cut to Luke before whatshername enters the frame. I think it would blend really well with the 1997 Mos Eisley.

Move the red gas giant from ANH to ROTJ.
Yavin would be a different color gas giant in ANH, while in ROTJ, a red gas giant would be the planet of which the Endor moon derives from.
As such, this would be a light source from which a red tint can be added to darker scenes.
The clash of red and green would emphasize the climactic internal and external battle between the light in the dark.
The blue elements of the Emperor’s throne room would be red. I wouldn’t want it to be overbearing, still grey and mechanical, but with some red hues.
This would also be sort of a tribute to the fact that it was originally gonna be in a volcanic area.

I would want to add Fortress Vader to my version of the saga, I just don’t know at when or how. It’s just too great a setting and visual characterization for Darth Vader that I want it in the OT.

I want Fortress Vader as well for the same reason. I’m looking to make a 100% self-contained nine film Saga so I’m trying to find a spot for this perfectly fitting setting in the OT using existing footage. Best I can come up with is trying to fit the scene from Obi-Wan Kenobi into ANH.

What does everyone think about replacing Anakin’s Ghost with David Prowse?

Author
Time

I’ve been a fan of the idea for some time. I feel like Prowse resembles what we now imagine Anakin might look like at that age way more than Shaw does.

I made a really rough mockup a long time ago, but I think it gets the idea across. If sonmeone were to actually make it, Prowse has a more “Anakin” hairstyle in a movie called Vampire Circus.

That looks amazing ildiem!! I remember seeing a picture on reddit of a young David Prowse and Alec Guinness in Jedi Robes. It looked incredible, in another time it would have been a decent prequel

Anyone here British or have a British accent and comfortable with voice acting?

I’d like to experiment with redubbing some of the officers in ANH when talking to Vader so their attitude towards him is more like in ESB and ROTJ, more timid and submissive. They’d address him more by “my lord” then “sir” (he is called “sir” in all 3 as well, but there’s more "my lord"s in the latter two films).

The extras in ANH were British actors redubbed by Americans, so I personally wouldn’t feel bad about it.

Has anyone tried adding the Sarlacc escape scene from Book of Boba Fett into Return of the Jedi? I can’t imagine it fitting in or adding something substantial, but I’m curious if there could be anything there.

I like you, let us burn things together.

I had an idea I think I shared earlier where Fett survives the Sarlacc but is killed by Vader for his failure to capture Luke (following up on an idea in which Vader hires him to capture Luke, tying the Rescue of Han plot into the Vader-Luke plot).

  1. If one wanted to add more monsters/creatures to the OT, you could take stop-motion creatures from classic Harryhausen monster movies. Not much more then a cameo, but it’d add some atmosphere.

  2. Turn CGI backgrounds from the SEs into matte paintings using the same technique I used to make Coruscant look like a classic style matte painting (which I plan to do with the entire trilogy). This way you could keep the Cloud City windows and not have them be CGI.

  3. Ambitious. Make to make some of the CGI creatures in the SEs look like stop-motion, like the Dewbacks for example. Would probably involve sharpening the textures and changing the frame-rate. The effects look so primitive I think with some tweaks you could convince a viewer that it’s stop-motion.

It has been suggested elsewhere but now that we have more material maybe having another try for an edit where there is only one Death Star. It would mean swapping the ROTJ look for the Rogue One look. The attack in ANH only slowing down the construction so Yavin can be evacuated which is finally completed in ROTJ.

G&G Fan, can you give a clip of the matte painting being used in the movie?

Idk, for me, that would detract too much from episode 4. The Empire has to suffer a great loss there, and Tarkin has to die. So, the only way that a single Death Star concept could work for me would be to have the Death Star explode only on one side (and maybe create a shot of Tarkin and his command blowing up, too) to sell the idea that despite a great success on behalf of the alliance, the rebels didn’t destroy the DS outright but merely destroy the main canon. Also, a larger explosion on the DS that consumes the main canon and a good chunk surrounding that area could easily explain the change in appearance compared to ROTJ.

That was just an initial test on a pic of I found to see if I could accomplish making a CGI image look like a matte painting.
So I started working on an actual scene. I decided to continue with Padme’s Ruminations. These are the first two shots.
The clip is regraded, as will be my version of the entire movie.
First thing I did was stabilize the shots. A user on thestarwarstrilogy.com pointed out to me that the OT shots are mostly stable, so removing the digital zooms brings it closer to that classic feel, whilst also making this more convenient. Then I took a snapshot of the shot within Premiere.
I imported the image into Photoshop, selected the backgrounds and used the Oil Paint filter, tuning it to my liking. I used Generative Fill to remove all of the traffic cars, not only because they don’t work as a painting and I don’t want to painfully rotoscope them. I also find them irritating: it makes the shots too noisy and distracting.
Then I exported those elements separately from the rest of the shot as a transparent pngs and placed them on top of the video, adding grain in Premiere so that they weren’t just flat still images.

The next and more difficult step will be figuring out how to do this process when there’s a character standing in the matte. I can’t just slap the image on like I can these shots.

This looks pretty good and I really think more artists doing this could lead to a lot of great PT edits that bring them that much closer to the OT. My one critique is I feel I can see just a bit too much of the “painting” texture artifacts, as if it were actually painted. The amazing things about the mattes in the OT, at least most of them, and at least in my opinion, is that you can barely spot the fact that they’re paintings, and the painting/canvas texture is barely visible. Just my two cents, but nice work!

Years ago on this thread, members discussed different ways to incorporate Coruscant into the OT. A user posted an edited frame of Coruscant from ROTS with an ROTJ starfield as the night sky and I thought it was just beautiful and somewhat convincingly 1980’s. I can’t help but wonder, have other people taken these ideas further than just images? I would love some concepts, edits or anything with more Coruscant-in-the-OT ideas. Any direction, links or references would be appreciated.

Thanks!
The painting texture artifacts are something I tried my best to keep on the down-low, but unfortunately that’s actually the least painting-like I could make it look.

One way to think of it is, I like the idea of trying to make the Prequels look slightly older then the Originals. As if they were actually made in order. I want this because the Originals are still gonna be the best no matter what you do, so trying to make the movies actually be able to be watched in 1-6 order is pretty great IMO.
