Community Focus Thread 2: Return of the Jedi — Page 7

I think if we could produce a community driven ROTJ edit with this thread for the 40th anniversary this year that would be awesome. Are there any other things we want to do with the movie? So far we have:

  • New Boba introduction/subplot (detailed wonderfully by RogueLeader)

  • New Anakin ghost/unmasking

The “Your mother once thought as you do” line is definitely something that needs to be added!

What else would you do with your edit?

  1. Have Boba be the one that “catches” Leia trying to rescue Han.

2a. Add the sound of Boba spurs off screen right before Han says, “What’s that?”

2b. When Leia looks up, cut to a new shot of Boba slowly raising his gun at Han and Leia.
This would require a new background plate that Nev has already made, and the shot of Boba would be a reversed shot of Boba lowering his blaster after the thermal detonator situation is resolved. Boba doesn’t have to say anything here, but you could have him say something like, “Going somewhere, Solo?” or “Not so fast, Princess.”

2c. When Jabba and the rest of his minions are revealed behind the curtain, give Jabba a new line that is something along the lines of, “Well done, bounty hunter!” or “You were right, bounty hunter!”

This is my favorite suggestion. Never understood the logic behind Jabba and his guys just hanging out waiting for Leia to free Han.

Yesterday all of us at home sat down and gave ROTJ another rewatch, due to the anniversary and I had an idea. I think the emperors arrival should be postponed until after the rebel meeting and Yoda’s twilight, in both scenes the Emperor is mentioned and his power and significance to the Rebel attack are underlined. It is the perfect build up to his introduction.

“Vader! Hologram, now!”

Episode 8 of Ahsoka gave us a perfect new Hayden Anakin force ghost. Just roto him out, put him in the scene, and you’re good. I might try and attempt it at some point.

On top of that making his robes dark like they were in the show would be cool assuming you only cut his head out to paste on Shaw.

Idk if this would be a plus or minus, but I think Hal or someone else suggested adding a 3PO line from the radio drama where he refers to Ewoks by name. That may not be necessary though.

Got you covered.

This is something that would take new footage with fan-made costumes to pull off but I would love it if when Vader tries to see the Emperor against his command Vader has a short fight with some royal guards guarding the throne room. Vader approaches, they try to use their electro staffs but Vader force chokes and shoves them away. That gives the guards and Vader a bit more to do.

There’s already a deleted scene from RotJ that’s more or less what you’re describing without the fight.

Do not DM me for edits. Whatever you’re looking for I don’t have it.

Was there ever any attempt made at visualizing the idea of Boba Fett actively hunting Luke at the beginning of the movie?

If one is to add that subplot, maybe Vader would the one to kill Boba Fett, force choking him or perhaps even using the force to cave his helmet into his head, crushing his skull.

Btw, since ppl were discussing how to do new Vader and Fett scenes combining previous dialogue lines, I have regular contact with one of the best Vader voice actors who sounds almost exactly like James Earl Jones. He even uses special equipment and can sound like Vader from any of the 3 OT movies, to ensure he sounds consistent with how he does in the rest of ROTJ.

It’s absolutely something I could discuss with him.

So what are the best edits of Star Wars? I’ve only ever seen Hals

On OT Radical Redux thread, I proposed changing Yavin’s (gas giant) color in ANH, and the red/orange gas giant be Endor, the planet the sanctuary moon is of.
Contrasting green and red/orange symbolizes the ultimate clash between good and evil. Also a tribute to the throne room originally being volcanic.

Attempts “Hellish” Emperor’s throne room. I did two versions, red hue and orange hue (to mimic the carbon freezing chamber).
This scene is turning out really well, I think.

Others, struggling a little bit. I’m struggling to remove a purple shadow from Vader’s saber in this shot, and my method has also completely fucked up Luke’s skin. I don’t want him looking like a vampire (at least I know an easy way to make Dooku look like one, now; that’ll come in handy).

Feedback and help would be much appreciated.

I think I’ve captured a better balance between red and orange. The previous ones I feel swayed too much one way or the other.

If one were to integrate the Vader-Fett subplot in the first act, you could have a shot of a bunch of severed bounty hunter heads next to Vader. They were others that were hired, each killed for their failure.

Shows how relentless Vader’s search for Luke has been.

A way to have Luke have been on Dagobah between ESB and ROTJ without moving the Dagobah scenes to the beginning.
I prefer the scene arrangement in the original because I like the buildup of the first act, and the OT in isolation doesn’t need to have Luke train more, because it’s the original and therefore is free to establish how long Jedi training takes.
However, I think having Luke train for a year works as long as there’s a way to retain the scene arrangement of the original.

Take the deleted scene of Luke turning on his new lightsaber and putting it into R2. Background changed to Dagobah. Then simply wipe to the droids on Tatooine. Rest of the movie goes on as normal.

Luke returns to Tatooine after having spent a year on Dagobah simultaneously training and coordinating the plan with his friends using holograms.

Ryan Golden’s read of lines for Vader for the Vader-Fett subplot discussed for the first act.
I incorporated the idea of Fett using the Sarlacc to capture Luke. The last line is my own idea: Vader kills Fett for his failure.

If one uses this lines, please always credit Golden, and do not use these to train AI.
