When did you give up with the Prequels, TPM, AOTC, or ROTS?

Author
Time
I know many fans were disappointed with TPM, and Jar Jar, but still held out hope for the other two episodes. I think in my mind most people gave up on the prequels after AOTC. I think that movie, despite how bad Jar Jar is in TPM, is really the one where people just put their hands up and said WTF?

Sure ROTS, IMO, is the best one of the three, and was anticipated by most, but I think the damage of AOTC really disappointed fans, and the success of Lord of the Rings, really hurt Star Wars, and that was the final breaking point. TPM disappointed, and then AOTC drove a daggar through our hearts. And even though I liked ROTS, the damage was done, and could not be repaired.

When did you guys finally put your hands up and realize this prequel trilogy may not be worth it?

Time
Personally, I never did...
yes, sure TPM was a disapointment, not only because of Jar Jar, but also because the 16 year anticipation for the movie placed a heavy burdon on it. In 1999, people had already seen so many special effects in various movies, that when they went to see TPM they expected something extraorinary that was never delivered. Instead, they were given some more special effects that did not impress the audience as they would in the 1980's and a really weak scenario. That was a huge dissapointment.
But besides that, I really can't see why people hated AOTC so much. IMHO it was a much better film than TPM. It's scenario had it's weak points, but had some really nice elements too. Don't forget: AOTC is the story of a teenager, and a very impulsive one. So what did you expect? Joda's wisdom? No, the film demonstrated (as it should) Anakin's weaknesses, the ones that would ultimately lead him to become what he became.
And to those who say that AOTC is a silly love story: I find the love story taking place in AOTC much more apealing than the one in ROTJ, but I don't hear anyone complain about ROTJ.

just a reminder:
Solo: You love him, don't you?
Leia: Yes (clueless about the misunderstanding that is about to happen!!!)
Solo: Alright, I understand, alright. When he comes back, I won't get in the way.
Leia: (surprized) It's not like that at all, he is my brother

HOW SILLY (LMAO)

So my opinion is that AOTC convienced me that ROTS would be a really great movie, and I waited for it with great anticipation. And when I went to the theatre to wach ROTS, i must say I at last was not disapointed at all
And now, for your feature presentation:

In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.

Exactly. I have found that many times, those who will swear to their death that the PT sucks and has bad dialogue, are the same ones who like to forget that many lines in the OT are quite silly, cheasy, and cliche.

Im not really sure, but TPM was a big blow, I just totally lost interest in Star Wars for the first time since 1977 a few months after, it was such as dissapointment and maybe felt the Prequels were only heading one way and maybe it was because i was now older and now had a lot of other interests and they took over, and I didnt care less about Clones when it was being made. now I saw it two weeks after it was released and enjoyed it, but realised it wasnt as good or as special as the Originals, but I enjoyed for a time, but it didnt have any staying power, so I gave up then probably....

BUT

out of curiosity a month or two before Sith, i started reading spoilers etc and became interested in it.and saw it on one of the first showings and liked it.........

For me....it was ROTS. I was hoping that Lucas would finally get his shit together for this one so I was keeping the faith, but that "NOOOOOOOOOO!!!" shit was it for me. Don't want to have anything to do with those pieces of shit he calls movies.

Just wondering, are you one of those people who consider the Clone Wars animated series superior to the PT?

No, I picked up the first vol cheap for collection sake and didnt think much of it and thought vol 2 was better but I dont think as good as the films, how ever much I dont like Episode 1, If truth be told I dont hate Episode 2 as much as Episode 1 and probably could sit through the DVD if i felt like it, but i just found/find them underwhelming and just dont find parts enjoyable and both drag to me,

Now thing is actually sit through the fan-editted versions and can enjoy them and find them watchable. though they could have been better, as could the whole thing i feel if Lucas had done things differently

I agree, the clone war cartoons you can watch once, as I did before Episode III, just to keep up with the story, but don't have much replay value after that. But there a couple of good lines in there that I wish were in the movies:

I don't know the exact wording, but Anakin and ObiWan are arguing in Volume 2, and I know Anakin says something to ObiWan about that Obiwan is not as good as QuiGon, or something like that, just to take a shot at him. But to me that was a key scene, because it gave you the sense that Anakin wishes that QuiGon trained him instead of ObiWan, thus approving of the ways QuiGon did things. For those who never saw the cartoon, opportunity missed by Lucas again.

For me, it was Attack of the Clones. I had accepted Phantom Menace as a Star Wars for the 90's. I realized Star Wars was no longer setting the standard, but following other filmmakers. In Clones, I became bored, something that had not happened in a Star Wars movie previously. Return of the Jedi and Phantom Menace had their share of silly things, but I never felt bored.

I posted a smallish rant in the Phantom Menace Initial Reactions thread. So, yeah, TPM was a big clue-by-four to me.

As for Han and Leia clearing up their misunderstanding, that's classic comedy. A pair of lovers is kept apart by some misunderstanding, but united at the end. It worked for Wilde, it worked for Shakespeare, and probably also Moliere and Plautus and lots of other people I ignored in school. I think it even worked for Lucas. The actors are capable, the lines are realistic, the music is fitting, it's photographed well. I don't really see what the problem is.

i gave up when those stupid destroyer roll out bots started firing in tpm, from then on i knew i was going to have to lower my expectations. because it ended up being about effects and boring plot with no characterization to be found.

at least aotc focused on the characters, however badly

I was o.k with TPM til Jar Jar opened his mouth then i was like WTF!!! and then he started playing up and I thought this gonna be shit and it was, it just to me never got going, and there was so much waste in it...............

Clones is more reedemable and dont hate it as I do Menace but it is still bad, i could stomach a sitting of the offical DVD if I could be bothered where as I cant with TPM, but some of the dialouge does really make me cringe and again there was waste, I still cant decide which I find more boring, since I hate Menace more I will go with that

I gave up at the beginning of Revenge of the Sith. As soon as the word "War!" came across the screen I knew it was over. I'm usually very quiet during movies but the whole time while watching ROTS I kept shouting out at the screen like I was a cast member of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The one part that made me panic that Lucas had lost his mind was when Obi-Wan said, "Wait a minute. Were smarter than this. How did this happen?" I thought for sure he had broken the 4th wall and was going to comment that this was totally out of character for him as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and that they needed to start over. I thought that they were in some training program, like a Holodeck or something, running through the motions to try and get Palpatine back.
I. Shit. You. Not. I remember thinking, "Oh my god...whoa, whoa, whoa. What the hell is going on here?! Is Obi-Wan going to look at the camera and go "Sorry folks, we're starting the movie over." I can't believe how much I panicked at that scene. Writing should never be the poor to envoke that kind of reaction.
Most of the time I just kept shouting, "Who wrote this crap!?" knowing full well who did.

I covered my eyes and went "Oh my goddddd...." during the balcony scene.

I was DIEING of laughter when the Emperor was all frog like and going "No! No! Unlimited Power!"

And the prize for worse scene ever was Vader's infamous Frankenstein "NOOOOOOOOO!!" scene. Some guy next to me started saying (in a Frankenstein voice), "Rrrr! Vader Smash! Rwar!"

Of course I counter acted that with my earlier line when Palpatine turns to Anakin and says, "Oh Anakin, I have good news." I shouted out "I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance!" The whole row cracked up.

When Obi-Wan says "The Sith are evil!" and Anakin retorts with "From my point of view the Jedi are evil!" I just had to sarcastically shout out "Oooo! Obi-Wan got buuurned!"

When Palpatine says that he's giving Anakin a new title of head-whatever-of the Jedi councel Anakin woodenly says, "I'm overwhelmed." I just said to myself, "Yeah, I can tell..."

And of course Grevous sounds just like Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. I can't STAND it. Everything he said I swore he was going to end with "For me to poop on!"

God ROTS sucked ass. It is the ONLY Star Wars movie that I actually fast forward though. Even TPM I can sit through the whole thing... But ROTS.... nope. When I walked out of the theater I thought it was the best of the 3 (which isn't saying much) but now that I've seen it 3 times, I hate it more than I hate the other two movies. And that is painfuly sad.

Actually after I saw Episode I, I gave up star wars. When Ep2 came out I was like, alright maybe, just maybe it can be ok. Which of course this movie was not. It wasnt till I came to this site that I got interested in star wars again. Invader Jenny, I did the same thing with my friends!

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's why it is the best of the three and the worst of the three to me. It has a lot of good emotional moments that the others don't compare to, but it has just as many cringe-inducing moments that it brings the film down. And its bad moments to me are much worse than the bad moments in the previous two. Or maybe it's simply because the previous two kind of stay on middle ground for the entire movie, never going anywhere great or going anywhere too horrible, but ROTS has really high spikes up and horribly low spikes down.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

As much as think the other two Prequels arent as good, I do really like Revenge of the Sith, and only really the find the balcony scene and some of other Anakin Padme dialouge really bad but not to me nothing as bad as in the other two... and dont laugh and come after me. I do actually prefer it to Return of the Jedi in some ways(not saying its better....)

No what?

I have to agree with Jenny on this one. I enjoyed it the first time, but I suspended a lot of my disgust. I tried to hold it in, but couldn't help but burst into laughter at the Franken-Vader scene.

Just because you like it doesn't really mean She will like it.
To tell you the truth, Lucas should have just quit after Jedi, forget the rest of his so called saga, get on with his life.
I hated the prequel trilogy, I hate the SE's. I am 18, so I was around for the Special Edition Hype. I then knew that the prequel trilogy would be crap by the changes made to the originals.
I watched the original thanks to the USA network 12 years ago, and I am glad these were the first version of Star Wars I saw.

I saw the Special Editions when I was in second or third grade. It was the first time I had seen the Star Wars movies in the theaters. I thought they were pretty cool then. I saw Episode I in fourth grade, and thought it was pretty cool. I saw it six times in theaters, actually. The charm wore off when I bought the DVD of Episode I. Halfway through the movie, I had an epiphany: "Wow....this movie sucks!" This was around sixth grade, I think. I held out patiently for Episode II, but thought it was merely OK. That was around 7th Grade. By the time Episode III came around (10th grade), the prequel charm was dead for me. I was just sick of the prequels and just wanted them to end.
