When I was a kid, I always thought that he was human, or some other species that we had seen, and that it was the force that had kept him alive for 900 years. I mean, he still aged for those 900 years, but didn't die.

Then again, I thought the same thing of the emperor, that he looked the way he did because he was 250 years old or that.

Funny how the prequels changed all that.
