Hello, this is one of my favorite childhood movies and I’d love to donate to this project. It’s very fascinating how they did the cropping for the VFX and I’d love to see how extensive it is.

Do you know if there’s somewhere to look for the open matte reels of the second film, Monsters Unleashed? The original listing is gone (because you successfully purchased it which is awesome), so I can’t see who originally had it. Was it someone from Warner Bros. or, like, a theater that had it from when they showed it?

Hey!

I’ve created an account specifically to jump on this thread to post. It really surprised me that Scooby Doo was filmed on film as opposed to digitally, given it was filmed in the early 2000s. Looking back, it probably makes sense that it was since there are HD Blu-ray editions available (Which wouldn’t be available if it was filmed digitally since we didn’t have those capabilities to film in that resolution back then. Whether the releases are native, or upscaled are two different things). And have learned a lot through searching this up and found that some films are still recorded today using film and reels.

I’ve been a big Scooby Doo fan myself since a young age and took a big liking to the 2002 movie release. I posted a video 9 years ago on YouTube that amassed 5 million views of a reverse version of Daphne’s protoplasm scene. Unfortunately, the YouTube account associated got hacked, and Google has no support whatsoever when it comes to recovering your account once it’s been hacked and details are changed… Apart from starting a whole new account again.

I’ve always had a big intrigue and fascination with videos and their resolution and quality output. So I’ve been using AI and video rendering programs for the past few years in an amateur way with self-teaching to upscale and enhance videos both through resolution and frame interpolation. So far, I’ve rendered a Blu-ray edition of Scooby-Doo (2002) many many times to increase quality and resolution, and have posted a YouTube video of the same protoplasm clip I spoke about earlier in 4K onto YouTube. (You can view it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqWjvxIIOzg). I have now rendered the whole movie with many improvements.

I think the point I might be trying to get across, without sounding pompous as I am no professional in the video, footage, or photo restoration sector. Is that, AI is getting to the point now where it can make videos/movies look far better than they ever could, even from the original negatives.

But yes, the videos that I have seen taken from the reel that’s been spoken about in this post looks impressive based on the extra content we can see in the frames (although you can see cameras in a few scenes which may have lead WB to back out of a potential IMAX release).

From what I can understand, the original poster who now has possession of the reels, has dipped off of the radar at the moment on the Scooby-Doo front. But if they ever come back here and see this post, I have a few questions for them. And would love to work with them to further restore the movie based on the clip I have provided above (I’m welcome to upload more clips and provide links since I’ve already rendered and remastered the whole film many times). I did try to look out for a Discord link someone had mentioned about before, but couldn’t see one.

For anybody reading this, please don’t feel that I am being condescending or putting a downer on this project. It could be something I could contribute to, not financially, but in my knowledge and understanding.

Happy New Year.

Luke.
