The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released) — Page 36

I had to take a bunch of that sort of thing down due to storage limits, but if there’s anything specific you’d like let me know.

I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

Well if you’re taking requests hahah, I’d love to see the OUT-sync’d SE “Look sir, droids!” bit, I think what was accomplished there was really something, and I’d love to have this for a quick edit I’m putting together to watch with my girlfriend’s family.

I’m releasing a Version 4 for ANH, in order to publish the best of what I can do with what I have. That way, in case hoped-for footage from TMWNN, Dat_SW_Guy, or Adywan never materialize, this project can be complete. Or at least not in limbo. The door will remain open to update these OT Custom SE projects if new source material compels it.

The primary difference is a new color grade, which I find more appealing and is based loosely on Adywan’s color corrected 2011 BluRay transfer. (Big thanks to DrDre for his color correction tool; not possible otherwise.) Used DSG’s Alderaan explosion, and TMWNN’s “I don’t like the look of this” to remove foreground CG dewback but keep the one in the background.

On Drive now, will pop up elsewhere soon.

Hello! Sorry for basically abandoning my project for months, but school has really kept up most of my free time, and the unfortunate news is that my laptop has broken down completely, so most of my progress is gone as of the moment. I’m hoping to atleast get the contents from the storage before I start from scratch again for the third time, however this time I’ve currently saved enough money for a good gaming laptop which will definitely help in the editing and finishing of the edit soon, sometime this year.

Thank you for your amazing work, currently watching through your edits in order with all the shows as well and loving it. However a few of the torrents I found are dead, might I be able to get that link to the drive? 🙏

Awesome, thanks Hal! I use yours for my default OT, so I’m happy you did a long awaited update 😃

There will for sure be another ANH update, though not right away. I will not update only for this one thing, but wait hopefully for updated source material.

But the change I want to make is using TMWNN’s footage to show Vader jump to hyperspace after the Death Star is destroyed. This dovetails nicely with two things: seeing the Falcon drop out of hyperspace in this edit, and seeing that Kylo Ren uses this ship to travel to Exegol in Ascendant.

Wish I’d have recognized this before making the recent update!

I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

Will you be adding in any updated effects such as laser and lightsaber improvements or is this mainly a colour corrected version of the original?

These are mainly hybridizations of the official versions. Because Star Wars home video has such a bad history of colars, I’ve done what’s possible for me to do to make the base sources look good.

And as the changelog describes, there are a few creative tweaks from myself and others that I’ve included editorially. These include the Falcon being seen in a blue hyperspace tunnel in ANH (thanks to Sir Ridley), improved appearance and close-to-original dialogue for the Emperor in ESB (stolen from Adywan’s lawn), and modified vocalizations for Boba Fett.

But, I do like the old school look and feel of these movies and so I don’t want my go-to version to modernize everything. The SE already puts these two things in tension and so for better or worse that’s the model: some of the rougher things are helped (although sometimes just made digitally rough) but the overall feel remains the same. I love Adywan’s work, and I love the work by Harmy and others to present the original versions. This project is the middle ground I’d prefer to watch.

I hope I didn’t go too far. What’s in this box? Oh, it’s a change I considered for a while, but decided against.

I think it’s virtually flawless in my air pods. I can kinda hear what you’re talking about with the right ear but it might be placebo.

It’s all in the center channel only, so it shouldn’t be like that.

hmm, maybe it’s just me. but it sounds just a tad too loud, and perhaps not as Robotic as the original. not in tone or delivery but in audio.

Yes, the robotic filter is slightly missing for the AI part. Same problem I encountered for Zorri in Ascendant (but surprisingly not Kylo).

Maybe decreasing the volume slightly for that part could help disguise it better. Otherwise, we’d have to figure out how Lucasfilm designed the Vader voice filter.

To reiterate, I don’t think it’s that noticeable. Only people who are purposely paying attention would notice.

Ryan Golden has practically perfectly replicated the Vader filters, even for each individual movie (it was different each time). I could ask him about it. I’m friends with him.

Yeah, it’s worth a shot. If it’s easier for him he could just record the line himself 😉 lol

Shouldn’t hurt to ask. Thanks!

Hello. A few months ago I saw an edit of Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker Force Ghost from David Kaylor’s Return of the Jedi – The Final Cut from his Star Wars: The Original Trilogy – The Final Cut edition, where David visually aged his face to make it look like the canonical age of 45 that the Vader/Anakin character had when he died. I think it was a more necessary change than having a younger version. So, Hal, I don’t know if you are interested in adding it to your Custom Special Edition of Return of the Jedi in the final part of the film of the Planetary Celebration version, or if you prefer to leave it as it was, with the original Anakin Skywalker, played by Sebastian Shaw. If you are interested in seeing the image, here is the link down below. Greetings! 👋🏻

I categorically prefer Shaw as Anakin’s ghost in ROTJ, as I feel it says more about Anakin’s redemption, whereas using Hayden makes it feel like a reversion.

I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

Probably should’ve said this earlier. Ryan Golden’s willing to do the new Vader line.

I just need to save the money to pay him to do it (I’m also having him do some others that I want for my edits; it’s more convenient to do multiple at once).

Awesome! I honestly prefer his impersonation to the AI voice. But it all comes down to whether or not he can replicate the voice filter they used in ROTJ effectively.
