Canadian Government falls!

Author

Well, really, it wasn't much of a surprise.

The house of commons just voted on a motion of non-confidence in the Liberal government. 171-133. Motion passed. History in the making, this is the first time in Canadian history that a government has been overturned on a simple non-confidence motion. An election will be called tomorrow after our prime minister asks the Governor General to dissolve parliament. We'll be going to the polls in late January sometime. I just don't want to see campaigning on the holidays.

So, now that the vote of no confidence has been passed......

You will elect a new prime minister, who will then request emergency powers in order to make an army, and he will then rise to the rank of Emperor, convert your government to an empire, then try to take over the rest of the world!!!!!

This is intresting indeed, and not much of a surprise.
I guess, considering the circumstances, they were asking for it...

WHAT EXACTLY DOES THIS MEAN FOR CANADA ???

well its been expected for a long time. the way our system work is that our country is divideing in a bunch of rideings similar to electoral votes/ areas. now each canadian party runs a canadate in each rideing, and the people will vote for that teh canadate that they like. when a canadate wins a riding then he is pretty much elected as a representive in the house of commons( our parlement) in our last election no one party had more then 50% of the number of canadates in the house of commons and so it was called a minority government. in these minority governments the ruling party the party with the most canadates in parlement must try to form a government by uniting with another party to get 50%, the librals of canada had agreement with the NDP up until yesterday and so the government fell.

Translation:

The Liberals had a minory government, meaning they had the most seats, but not enough to win a vote without an alliance with another party. This has happened a few times in Canadian history, and arrives from us having (right now) four main political parties, rather than just two like the U.S.

Recently, the Liberals have come under scandal (well, the scandal's old, but it's official now), and the other parties have been waiting for the chance to bring them down. They introduced a motion saying that they no longer had confidence in the Liberal government. The motion was passed, because nobody was allied with the Liberals, and so we're back to the polls for the second time in 18 months.

And are you happy about this?

By the way, what ARE the four Canadian political parties?

Hey, yeah, maybe I should ring in with my own opinion. I, for one, can't stand the thought of a winter election, because that means campaigning during the holiday season. I don't particularly like the Liberal party, but they are probably the best choice, given many of the issues.

The four (main) parties in Canada are:
Liberals
Conservatives
New Democratic Party (and if you need to know where they stand on the political spectrum, consider that they evolved out of the Canadian Communist Party)
Bloc Quebecois

Now, the Bloc are not a national party, but only contest in ridings in the Province of Quebec. Their main platform is the separation of Quebec from Canada -- and they hate Liberals.

Really, the Liberals and the NDP are left-wing, the Conservatives and the Bloc right. Don't try comparing to Republicans and Democrats, though

I am a Conservative, but that doesn't mean I like their leader, Stephen Harper. Conservativism is about maintaining the status quo, which is why I'll likely end up voting Liberal.

sybe, your probably right, however ill probably vote green in the next election. sybe failed to mention a 5th very very very very small party called the green party, also known as the marwana party. now if you look at the political platforms of all the parties the green are the least corrupt and have the most practical agenda. but yeah when i say small i mean it, the greens might win one seat in the next election if they are lucky, if one were to look at the number of people that voted green in the last elections i think it was jsut over 4.5% so that jsut gives you an idea of how small they are. also last year the only riding they came close to winning jsut happens to be the riding i am in that is why will probably will vote for them.

Aw man, Nanner Split beat me to it.

When I read about the no confidence vote the first thing I thought was PALPATINE!

Actually, Shim, Greens and Marijuanas are two different factions. Are you in the Whistler riding?

Sybe pretty much nailed it as to what this means. I get the feeling that a lot of people will vote Liberal out of spite, much the way Sybe is contemplating doing, which will mean *sigh* yet another Liberal majority government. The timing of the vote is going to mean low voter turnout. The whole scenario just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

On the up side, if the Liberals do stay in power, it may make me some extra cash, because the proposed settlement for First Nations Residential School claimants will pass, meaning that the lawyer's fund for work on those files will get approved.

Are they Liberal in the same sense that we have in America?

Some would say that Conservatives are analogous to Republicans and Democrats are analogous to Liberals. Personally, I think Canadian Conservaties are more analogous to Democrats; we really don't have an extreme right-wing party.

Yeah, we don't really have a right-wing in Canada. We used to, in the Reform Party, but as soon as they became the Canadian Alliance (after people noticed their Conservative Reform Alliance Party spelled, well, CRAP), they moved closer to centre, and when they merged with the Progressive Conservatives (an oxymoronic misnomer if I've ever seen one) to become the Conservative Party of Canada, even more so.

Really, the Conservatives are just right of centre, the Liberals just left of centre, the NDP just left, and the Bloc just in Quebec. Sad, too, because I think Duceppe would make the best PM of the four.

And don't think he's right-wing, either. He was a union man in his working career, and his political career started with the Labour Party.

the conservatives can be pretty right at times. they hate gays and the poor, well harper does anyways. and they were mad we didn't support Bush about going into Iraq.

True enough, but the Conservatives are going to keep all the wackos out of the spotlight as much as they can so they can have a fighting chance.

You mean your political parties realize it is possible to take a position other than extreme left or extreme right?!?!
