Blade Runner OV vs. DC

I know many on here have a strong belief in preserving the theatrical versions of films, but, looking at the content of the theatrical version of this, I can't see why that, even the most strong of purists, would want to preserve it. The changes Ridley Scott made for the DC added to the quality of the film, if anything (in removing the voiceover, etc). It added to the abmiguity of the story, which is a good thing.

Because its the version, some people prefer, it doesnt matter if you dont think it as good, each person has a different taste and some prefer the Original Version of Blade Runner just as people prefer the Original Versions of Star Wars.

I prefer the DC, but BOTH versions should be made available. They are different enough to warrant both being released, no matter what someone's personal preference is. Too bad the theatrical version will never be released.

In this particular case, the "theatrical" version was what the studio wanted, not the director. Even Ford's voiceover sounds bored and forced.

I liked the voiceover but hated the happy ending of the theatrical version. I found the "dream sequence" to be grossly out of place, as if it were forcing the afterthought of Deckerd-as-a-replicant upon a new generation. It made it less ambiguous.

Theatrical cut - happy ending = my favorite edition.

Myself, I prefer what the director wanted, not what the studio wanted, since the studio is out to please people and are in it for the $$$$. And, in a sense, the DC is the original version, since it was what Ridley Scott intended.

And it shouldn't. A film is what the director wanted, not what others want. The studios, fans, etc, cannot be taken into consideration when working on a film, otherwise it's not the director's film anymore, is it?

but could a director not want to make a film that fans love. in that case what the fans want should be taken into consideration.

thats why studios have screenings and then go back and make changes (hence the VO in Blade Runner) The studios finance the movie so why shouldnt what they want matter? If the fans arent gonna go see it the studios wont green light it (Ok, well if the studios dont think the fans will want to see it) and it wont get made, so shouldnt that be taken into consideration at least a little?

also, what about the writers (including creators of the characters, ie for comics) of the story? surely they should have more say in it than the director as they are the ones that came up with the vision in the first place. (not saying this applies here)

and is it what the directed wanted or what he wants. (Lucas wants SW as he's making it now, he wanted it as he made it in 77. Part of his wants back then were for the fans to accept it so it made money, now he doesnt care about what the fans want)

finally, no one has argued that one version is better/superior in any way. Sure people have said "I prefer xxxx version" but they stated it as their opinion. You asked about preserving a cut of a movie that in you're opinion was shitty and why people would want that. well first off, preservation has nothing to do with the quality of the movie, it has to do with keeping the movie (available) in its original form. This has been told to you before. People here arent saying only make the Theatrical available or only make the DC availble, they are saying make both available. Preserve the version that was shown in theatres. ok, release directors cuts or extended cuts if you want. make those available, but dont throw away the theatrical because original vision or not, thats how some people first saw it and thats how some people prefer it.

Personally, I'd like for the OV to be made available so I can see it. It's been a very long time since I've seen the OV, and it has never really been available on home video anyway. The first release of Blade Runner on video was an extended cut that put more violence back into the film.

No I have not. But, before you go calling blasphemy, I, once again, am VERY aware of the changes. The voiceover was in the OV. The unicorn dream was not present in the OV. The "happy ending" was in the OV. And I prefer the DC, because the voiceover ruins the ambiguous feel of the movie, the dream sequence brings up the idea that Deckard may be a replicant, and the "happy ending" once again, destroys any trace of ambiguity.

Yes, I know these changes from Wikipedia. And you really should watch Blade Runner, no matter the version. It really is amazing. I'm not going to pull one of those "You must watch this version!" though.

Adam, you're cutting yourself down left and right. I should have guessed from you having been "looking at the content of the theatrical version of this" rahter than, say, "watching the theatrical version."

Now, I'll admit, I've never seen Blade Runner, and I've heard both have their merits, but how can you say that the DC "added to the quality of the film" when you haven't seen the film in question?

Because I specifically know what changes were made between the OV and DC, and what effect those have on the story when comparing the two versions. And believe me, they have quite an effect on the story and the overall feeling of Blade Runner.

Just because you know the changes doesn't mean you know how the overall feeling of the film is changed. You've NEVER ACTUALLY SEEN IT! Have you actually watched the clip with the narration in it? Have you actually watched the "happy ending"? And if you have, was it in with the rest of the movie? I'm still a virgin. If I read every single book on sex that was ever written, would I be able to actually give a detailed description on the differences between sex and masturbation? No, I wouldn't.
