His name is Matt, and when he was 14 years old, he got in trouble for fighting at a local amusement park in Wichita, Kansas. His older brother, who saw that Matt had not started the fight but was merely defending himself, interceded. After the smoke cleared and everyone left the park, Matt’s brother sat with him in the car and said, “Hey, have you heard about this new movie called Star Wars?” So they went to see Star Wars (none of this “Episode I New Hope” rubbish, oh no, not in the summer of '77) and for Matt it was a transformative experience. This young boy, skirting up against puberty and feeling like an outcast, had always felt unable to find his tribe, but now he had now walked into a packed theater full of like-minded mad ones, and together they laughed and cried and cheered, sharing in an experience that was larger than life. Star Wars is not just a movie; it’s an historic milestone in the lives of its devotees.
