Fantastic work on all of it, Ady, thanks! With your focus back on Episode 6, does that mean your work on 4 is (nearly) done? Looking forward to the release!

The third and final video for this week, as promised.

https://youtu.be/Gy8b1L318Sw

This one, having the original 2020 grading played alongside the new grading may through out the perception of the new colour grade in places, especially with skintones. The 2020 shifts from having an almost fully desaturated image with a heavy blue filter (why the hell is endor suddenly blue?) for the space shots shifting to a more green shifted grade with yellow/ orange skin tones. Subtle colour tones on the Death Star equator mattes have been lost in this new grade, similar to what happened with the 2004 grade. So after watching it in comparison mode, watch it again while covering the top image and you’ll get a better idea of the grade.

And for anyone wondering why the TIE’s are blue in this , well they were blue in this scene and others in 1983 right up until the horrendous 2004 grade ( yes, they were blue in the '97 SE release too) where they became more desaturated and a heavy blue tint added to the picture, and the 2020 grade seems to have gone down that route too but this time eliminated all of the blue colouring, except for the matte shot where they part from the shuttle.

There are about 3 fixes in this video this time around. See if you can spot them all

great! they look beautiful.

the two changes I saw were:
Jabba’s palace door
camera movement retimed before the wipe to tatooine
and maybe you fixed out-of-focus Vader?

Ah, there are 4 fixes then 😉

It’s very subtle, but it seems that the reason you retimed when Commander Jerjerrod started walking away was because during the wipe, some of the frames were cut as the wipe started to cover him. Very nice catch!

I believe Ady said that ANH:R HD will be finished by summer.

Actually they duplicated frames originally to slow everything down so they had enough frames to cover the wipe. Originally there was no wipe and it cut straight to vader walking through the corridor.

I wonder if you’ve tried reinserting the deleted scene back where it originally belonged and watching it through?

I said as much in the facebook thread but I really think that scene is important to set up the main ‘father son’ theme of the movie, and that it’d be a stronger film with it in. I don’t think it undermines the later Luke reveal as we only see him hooded.

I think for many people, reinserting that great scene would make Revisited the definitive version of ROTJ (where along with the ‘father son’ drama, we also get to see an extra Death Star corridor set built by the production, we see the parked Falcon and XWing, and we see Luke tooling his new lightsaber - all v.cool).

He’d have to fix that awful matte painting though

Ha! Personally I like that… it’s just one more lovely bit of unseen but original, period 1980s artistry to enjoy from this magical movie which we all love.

Plus with the sandstorm sequence cut (and totally unusable) it provides some geographical context to the rescue plan.

I will say that inserting deleted scenes isn’t entirely unprecedented for a special edition, as proven with the ANH Jaba scene. But that scene really sucked, so it’s a good thing it got removed from Revisited.

If this edit wants to be the definitive remaster of RoTJ, I think that scene could definitely be cool to see. Especially since Vader reaches out to Luke in a manner very similar to Kylo and Rey speaking to each other from across the galaxy. I really like the idea that Vader could have been trying to form a dyad in the Force with Luke.

But it does take away from Luke’s mysterious appearance at the palace, I suppose. I dunno, I think I prefer being able to see somebody making a lightsaber in a live action movie over that, though. Also makes it more clear what the plan is exactly to rescue Han.

I like that Vader/Luke deleted scene in isolation but I think it was wisely cut out for better pacing and dramatic reveal.

Completely fair. I think somebody did some upscaling work on it in this forum, though. Might have even changed that matte painting. But AI upscale can only do so much.

That’s where I fall on the question. It really detracts from the semi-ominous reveal of Luke later in the movie and the choice to unveil his new lightsaber for a big action scene (where it makes the most impact).

I’m impressed with what I’m seeing, Ady! It’s impressive with how much you’ve been able to restore proper coloring to the movie and to see the subtle fixes implemented throughout. Do you think you’ll release a color-corrected/properly regrained master of the movie, like you did for ANH?

The common criticism of ROTJ is that it’s tonally lightweight and ‘kiddie’ in comparison to the previous two films.

Critics say act 1 muppets, act 2 teddy bears, and its not until act 3 that the film takes itself half seriously.

I believe that restoring the Vader / Luke deleted scene would help redress that somewhat, by adding more substance and gravitas to the earlier part of the film.

In this age where we are seeing grainy scratched old photographs turned pristine I’d have some hope the technology exists, and if anyone can upscale and improve the visual quality it would be yourself Adrian. It would be quite a coup were it possible.

Someday the technology will get there to clean up the deleted scenes, and someone will do it.

There’s a weird-looking lens flare shining on Palpatine when we first see him going down the ramp. Is that going to be removed?

Probably just timing and pacing reasons. The movie already spends an obscene amount of time on Tatooine rescuing Han. They could have easily done it with about 10 minutes of screen time and saved more room for the good stuff, which is the Luke/Vader/Emperor scenes. Which is why I’ve never been a huge fan of Episode 6.

Here what you’re saying, and agree with you but Idk if more might be less. Like the Luke v Vader v Palp stuff is so good, in part due to how well its paced, more might just add bloat. The issue ROTJ has is there is little to now act two, it goes from Tatooine to some lil scenes on Dagobah and Home one, then its stright to Endor and speeder chases straight into act three. Its bloated act one, truncated act two that make the film drag.

I was watching the Emperor Arrives comparison again, and it seems that the new color grade unfortunately makes the difference between the real and painted Stormtroopers and Scout Troopers more obvious.

Again, this is just and overall color correction, issues like this will be fixed later during FX and shot for shot color correction.

Thanks for testing that, Ady. I’ve added a different take which I think sounds better. I’ve tried putting the unmodified line in a rough test, and I definitely see what you mean, it’s missing that robotic quality despite it sounding like JEJ:

As you’ve made clear enough, you don’t feel it necessary to change this. The only reason I’m posting about it again is because I’m sure this will go in an alternative audio track project made by Octorox (or somebody else) at some point. What will likely end up happening is just replacing “Obi-Wan” with “Your mother” in the audio track to minimize any noticeable loss of that robotic quality between the sentences themselves . But all posts I make about this topic from now on will go in Octo’s miscellaneous projects thread, instead.

I love this. If Adywan doesn’t use this i’ll have to seek out this Octorox mix (thanks for bringing it to my attention)

Great work as always Ady! Can’t wait for ANH:R
