Now that I have a laptop, I need a carrying case/brief case.

Any suggestions?

Get a briefcase that can be used for other porpouses. It could be useful some day you're not carrying a laptop, and you can have some papers on it too.

I've been eyeing the ones on customhide.com, especially this model:

I'm hoping I can find a similar model for 100 or so, but I'll probably break down and get it(aka let my parents pay for it).

Question is, what kind do you want? I have a Samsonite one that I won from a law firm. It's nice, but I'd need a super sturdy laptop because it doesn't offer a lot of protection to what's inside. The backpack models seem to be really good.

Plus, the backpacks make you less of a target for thieves and muggers. Laptop briefcases and messenger bags tend to be targeted more often because of the likelihood that they carry what people think they carry... a laptop. If you use a backpack, that doesn't have logos or something that outwardly declare that it is, in fact, a laptop bag, then you minimize your chances of being robbed. Much like how thieves target people wearing white earbuds because the odds are that it's connected to an iPod and not something else.

My current one is a Kelty, but I had a Jansport before that. I got mine through my college with the laptop. Not sure what brand they have now, but pretty sure they've been using Keltys ever since the first year (when i had the jansport).

I agree with bossk about the being targeted thing, part of the reason i like my backpack and suggested it. Unfortunatly while on campus this wasnt the situation cause everyone had one, though if they had the laptop in it is another story.

The nice thing with the kelty (and jansport to some extent) is that it has 2 compartments, so you can have books in the other. they both also have a padded section where the laptop goes. The kelty also has the ability to take that section out completly and the part where it connects to the bag can then have a strap attacthed to it and can be carried as just the laptop (not all that usefull really (at least imho) but it taking it out lets you use it as a regular bag (which you can do with it in, but you get a bit more space when its out) )
