That's a purely subjective idea. Lucas is Lucas, always was, and he hasn't changed character. The SE and PT were what he wanted them to be. The OOT, was not.

Bullshit. I accept that there were budgetary and technological limitations back in 77 when he was making Star Wars and perhaps the movie was not quite the grand space opera he envisioned in his head. However, story changes and all the rest of it are the actions of an aging, obsessed Billionaire. What can redeem him? Realise and acknowledge his mistakes and rerelease the original trilogy as it was. If he really wants he can then release a new special edition, with vastly improved effects but NO character or story changes, which I would actually quite like to see.

War does not make one great.

O-OT on DVD, if he put that out, it would be like he was Vader and he threw the Emperor to his death in ROTJ. His last words to us would be, "Fans, take my helmet off so I can give you the original DVD's." Then he would be truly redeemed.

Except, once again, "mistakes" are in the eye of the beholder. Any changes he made, he desperately wanted made, and couldn't care less about what others thought of it. The reason he doesn't release the original versions is that he doesn't really care about film history and preservation, in regard to his own films. He wants future generations to remember them the way he wants them, not the way they were. It is obvious to me that he wants to erase the OOT for good. So, with his mentality, there never will be a DVD release of the OOT since, like I said before, to him, they are merely "early drafts."

And, he's already said, if fans want the OOT, they can get it on Laserdisc or VHS.

For some acknowleging the exsistence of films/versions that made him famous, millions in cash, and helped him collect numerous awards

they were not billed as "rough drafts" to the record numbers in 77 80 83 and to the people he collected awards from around that time

(youre a nice chap sometimes Adam but you do have a bit of a cheek calling R.M an asskisser and gloryfing everyhing he does when you do pratically the same)

I don't kiss Lucas's ass. I understand his motives. McCallum, on the other hand, gets his paycheck from Lucas, so it is a requirement that he kiss his ass in order to keep his job and get paid.

I can't wait til Lucas starts to change around the PT, and somewhere down the line there will be a change that will piss you off.

I didn't mind the SE in 97, and wasn't that mad as others about Han shooting first. But when Hayden was inserted into Sebastian Shaw in the ROTJ DVD, that was the breaking point for me. It wasn't a special effects change, it wasn't cleaning up the negative, it was a change in the whole story. Now, whether you like the PT or not, whenever you watch that scene, the PT was tied to the OT forever.

As I said, somewhere down the road Lucas is gonna change something that you think is wrong, and he'll say as always, "These are my movies, and this is my vision." And you'll be bitching like the rest of us.

I have no problem with changes. If he decides to change the PT, I will set back and watch.

We shall see, I personally cant wait for George to turn his beady eye on the Prequels and change things so some of these people moaning at the O.T guys for complaining, making an opinion about changes etc on other places etc, to see how it feels when some scene or something they liked has changed because the bearded one has changed his mind about his "vision", and to be sure some will complain, but that they slightly luckier they have a more modern format to fall back on..

I'm not sure if Lucas has done anything to warrant redemption, which is purely a notion on part of the fans, but what I would like to see is for him to put Star Wars away and move on to other things.

I know he can make other movies - now is the time.

Releasing the O-OT and giving the SW franchise to a bunch of people who are willing to do good movies with no excessive CGI, and let them re-make the prequels, and do episodes 7 to 9.

When he wakes up and learns to respect his fans for their toy-buying loyalty before the P.U. came along. I don't blame him completely really for that 'travesty' everything worked except for his writing and directing so it's quite a stretch for me to say this... but.... It's sort-of our fault the P.U. was made. If the SE wasn't praised and became such a success to show that no matter how stupidly he screws up a star wars movie, he'll still make a gazillion dollars, things would have b3en a lot different mesa tinks.

Ok, have a nice day folks. I'm off to take care of some business.

Based on the quality of the storyline, dialog, and acting in the prequels, I find this statement highly dubious.

Either Lucas had no passion whatsoever while creating these films, they were simply a grand experiment in CGI for his personal amusement, or he's lost his edge. There is no indication in these films that the man who created the OT and THX 1138 still exists and is capable of producing quality work.

I can't remember viewing any recent, decent movie where the audience actually laughed at the dialog. Do you know how bad the writing has to be to make modern moviegoers giggle? And how bad is the directing when you have a cast of very capable actors delivering lines like Shaq reading cue cards on SNL?

If the guy who made American Graffiti makes a comeback, I welcome him. I just wish he had come back in time for the prequels.

Nothing could possibly redeem Lucas - except maybe putting the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD in it's original format without any of that additional CGI or ghost of Haydsen bullshit.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Releasing the OOT would be a good start, but I seriously think all hope is lost for this man.

Jay is right, this is not the same guy who did THX, Grafitti or the OT. He's lost his edge or just plain lost his marbles.

I was watching a movie the other night that immediately made me think of the prequels and how they relate to the originals. That movie was Blues Brothers 2000. Now, I grew up watching the first BB film and it is undeniably an American Classic. I knew BB 2000 was going to be not as good, but what I got was the absolutely stupidest movie sequel that could ever be made. It totally lost the feel of the first film, was laughable at its stupidity, was of completely low quality, I mean the movie just left me thinking what the hell Dan Akroyd was thinking when he wrote this stupid piece of shit. My best reason to myself is that Aykroyd and John Landis aren't the same actor or director that they were in 1980. Plus the movie was missing a very important element: John Belushi AKA Joliet Jake. The replacement for him was John Goodman. Anything that made the first BB special was lost in the enormous amount of time in between both films.

I watched both films back to back and it just kept reminding me of how the PT went as compared to the OT.

In my own mind, I will forget the PT or the SE ever existed. I find I'm happier that way.

As usual, I agree with Cassidy. Can't wait to see him stretch out a little like he used to before he caged himself in.

The guy who made American Graffiti wasn't there for "Star Wars" period. Because they're different movies. The guy who made THX wasn't there for American Graffiti, either, and neither of those guys were the guy who helped edit "The Godfather." But yet it's the same guy. You haven't seen either one of those two for awhile because he was busy being the guy who made "Star Wars" for about 30 years, with breaks for being the guy who created "Indiana Jones."

but as Cassidy said, the guy needs no redemption. Hell, to most people, if there was 'Redemption' to be had, "Revenge of the Sith" was that redemption. Hell, look at this thread. half of the people here don't even really know what they want outside of the original trilogy on DVD. Which, if you step back and look at it, doesn't sound like much of a "redemption" at all.

Bizzle...what you said makes absolutely no sense.

THX, Graffiti and Star Wars were all made my a hungry, young director who wanted to tell his own stories. Doesn't matter that they were all different stories or different kinds of movies. They all came from the same creative spark.

Now that spark has been extinguished by years of resting on his laurels improving the special effect industry instead of his own directing style and techniques. Years of ass kissing, awards and tons of money have killed that creative spark.

And ROTS was no redemption in my book.....it was the same shit sandwich as the first two.

I personally would love to see the prequels butchered and made into good movies by good screenwriters and directors. I'm sure that would piss Adam off to our satisfaction.

The Bizzle will always be that angry little badger I knew from Tatooine. I agree with him, though, a re-release is hardly redemption. There's no way he's the same guy he was back then either, but then again who is? But the point must be taken, GL was once hungry, but now he has fed on the fat of the land.

Redemption, IMHO, would take quite a lot: reunite with Kurtz, Kasdan, and Kershner to re-write and re-film the prequels, then de-assify the OT and give us a special edition without storyline changes. This, in effect, would be him saying 'I was wrong, I can't do it on my own - Star Wars doesn't just belong to me, Star Wars belongs to everybody'.
