Would everyone be irked if I pushed out a V2 now? I fixed the problems that have been mentioned, but I also found some audio transitions in ROTS that mysteriously vanished without my noticing. Most of them were probably not easily heard, but I noticed and it bothers me. I’m also adjusting the size and amount of grain.

There wouldn’t be any other major adjustments, it’s all audio stuff and/or smoothing out transitions. So if you’re happy with them as they are, you wouldn’t need to download them again.

Not at all, but I do want to mention I caught another muffled line in AOTC when the delete senate scene is transitioning to the Kenobi duel scene. You can barely make out Palpatine’s next line but it’s there in the mix.

Got it, fixed.

I’d download a V2 whenever you have it ready!

AOTC is amazing, I feel like everything really works now for the most part. Here’s a couple things I would change:

  • I would add back the nightmare scene, Anakin’s mother is only mentioned once before this so it feels like it comes out of nowhere for him to want to leave so bad. I think it would work better if we saw him having the nightmare at least.

  • I kind of missed Yoda at the end of the film, it felt slightly short. I like having him use the force to protect Ani and Obi and not taking out his saber (although I don’t hate the Yoda fight)

  • I would maybe swap the diner scene with some of the Jango asteroid chase, but it worked totally fine the way you have it.

Overall, great job! The added material really changes the film.

Hello. Thank you for all the hard work on these edits. I had a chance to watch version 1 of both Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones this morning. This message will focus on Phantom.

Overall, I really enjoyed the pacing in this cut. It reminds me a lot of older versions of Hal-9000’s episode 1 before so much of the movie was pruned away. This version retains more scenes of film that I remember as a child without getting too bogged down in tedious mythology or politics. I felt like the trims made on the space station to get the jedi down to Naboo faster were well executed as its where I remember the original movie failing to pick up speed. I think you did well achieving a tolerable amount of Jar-Jar across the film.

While I am used to fan editors cutting the Gungan City scenes I enjoyed your choice to leave it in. The reveal of the underwater city is beautiful, and I just believe the following scenes are just too important for establishing Qui-Gon’s character and setting up the third act conflict to scrap entirely. The negotiation with Boss Nass shows that Qui-Gon is compassionate and merciful man who is willing to use mind control to get results. It helps foreshadow some of Qui-Gon’s
sketchy behavior on Tatooine. While I did miss the planet core monster sequence somewhat, I thought the cut was well executed and probably better for the overall pace. If not for the bite marks on the submarine when the jedi arrive at the Capitol, I might not have remembered.

I felt like this edit did the best at making the Tatooine segment of the movie better. Taking out a lot of Jake Lloyd’s childish noises helped make Anakin a lot less annoying. Numerous trims at Anakin’s house were helpful in speeding up the movie. C3P-O gone just worked amazingly well, and with it R2 fades into the background as well. Of the changes on Tatooine, I would say the deleted scene where Anakin beats up the Rodian child stuck out for me. While the content itself was fine, I can’t decide if the scene felt a little too short due to the editing or it just didn’t flow well with the neighboring scenes. I was neutral on inclusion of Maul’s probe droids they didn’t hurt, but they didn’t necessarily add anything to my experience either.

The Jedi Council on Coruscant are still very frustrating with talk of Anakin being too old to train and being maddeningly passive about the encroaching dark side, but there’s not much that editing can do about it. The sequence is short, but the cut jedi test is not particularly missed. Maybe it makes Yoda seem like a bit of a jerk to start picking on the child right away. To me it highlights that they should’ve cast someone older to play Anakin. I was glad you also made other cuts to Coruscant I think the movie really bogs down here.

Skipping ahead, I don’t have much to say about the final third of the movie featuring the battles. It plays out similarly to other fan edits I’ve seen, which is to say, a substantial improvement on the theatrical cut by shoring up Anakin and Jar-Jars portion of the finale.

Overall great job creating a less annoying replacement that still feels enough like watching the original film. While I also watched your attack of the clones I will write up my thoughts another time.

Hi Spence, first I at want to say a huge thank your for sharing your edits with me, I have been lucky enough to watch TPM and AotC this week and am looking forward to watching Rots this weekend.

The prequel Trilogy are tough to edit especially with there being some amazing edits already out there as in Hal9000, Octorox and Eye painter and know you can never really please everyone with a personal edit as certain things you may like others will hate and vice verse, so thank you very much for your hard work with these.

The colour grading and grain done by KK650 I personally think is amazing, unfortunately I have never been able to get hold of his PT edits but wow his grading really does help tone down all the CGI which helps a lot especially with TPM.

The Phantom Menace edit I absolutely love, the cuts and pacing work really well and even tho I know the outcome of the pod race I still felt on edge and excited for the outcome, also was nice to watch TPM and have it feel like I’m watching a Star Wars movie. I can’t say if it’s over the last 23-24 years Jar Jar has grown on me or you have made him likeable in this edit or maybe I’m so used to watching edits of him so toned down and your hits the middle ground lol.
Three of the main things I loved were the inclusion of the gungans under water city, the exclusion of C3PO and the pod race.

Only two things I would have liked to have seen but this is just me personally is the inclusion of There’s always a bigger fish and the exclusion of Jabba the Hut.

All in all a very solid edit which will more than likely become my go to version of TPM.

Attack of the Clones is always a tough one for me to sit through, it’s not that I hate it but alway feels like it could have been sooo much more, I think I may have gone into this one too soon after watching your TPM edit lol, solid work all round the pacing, cuts and additions all work amazing. Love the exclusion of C3PO as it always amazes me how he’s there with Lars family working on their moisture farm and then just up and leaves to go on an adventure with Anakin, Padame and R2 lol for a protocol droid that doesn’t want to fly in a starship I think he maybe confused😂. Also loved the end battle with Obi-Wan, Anakin against Dooku, the exclusion of Yoda I thought was perfect and Dooku fleeing as the others arrived was an amazing choice.
Another solid edit.

🤞I get chance to watch RotS this weekend and I’ll post my update.

Thanks once again Spence for sharing these with me.

Just finished Revenge of the Sith and like I said in my previous post the PT are hard to edit with there being some excellent edits already out there by Hal, Octo and Eye painter just to name a few.

The cuts, timing and pacing are all very good and I’ll admit I did go into this one very skeptical as I didn’t think you could possibly match your previous two edits but wow you done it, very solid edit everything just works the additional scenes added of order 66 attack on the Jedi Temple help make it feel fresh and different from the other edits of ROTS, I have always been a fan of the Yoda Vs The Emperor scene but your edit works great without it.

Thank you once again for sharing these with me, I have really enjoyed my first viewings of Star Wars in 2024 and think I may now have my solid go to versions of the PT.

I highly recommend any one interested view these as Spence has done an outstanding job.

Thank you Spence.

Any V2 updates?

Not yet, but the edits will go live on IFDB this weekend. So I should get a lot more eyeballs on it, which means more feedback. Then I’ll revisit for V2.

Hi everyone, I have listed these on the IFDB. If you’ve watched the edits, I’d really appreciate it if you could take a moment to leave a quick review.

This is not to hear everyone sing my praises or anything. Reviews on IFDB push the edit to the front page, which means more people see that it exists, which means it gets out to more and more viewers. Reviews are also very helpful in finding and fixing any issues that I missed, and getting feedback on where I could improve as an editor in general.

So if it’s not too much trouble, I’d really appreciate it!

One of the most frequent pieces of feedback I’m hearing, so much so that I can’t ignore it and you’re all probably right, is that we don’t see Anakin have a nightmare about his mother. So V2 will rectify this. I’m already working on it.

I really hate the “Anakin just writhing around shirtless in bed” thing so it’s going to be more of a montage of images, similar to Obi-Wan’s nightmare in the Obi-Wan series.

Hi, I just finished AOTC and it’s great! Definitely my preferred version moving forward. My only critique is I would prefer to remove the line “good job” by obiwan in the arena. It seems antagonistic without any lesson learned/taught, and makes obiwan come across as an asshole. Thanks again!

Thanks to everyone for the feedback so far. I’m glad the edits seem to have been received well.

I wanted to let everyone know that I will soon be releasing a V2 of Attack of the Clones. Very little is changing, but here is what to expect:

  • Slightly lengthened the transition from the senate to Anakin standing on the balcony for better flow.
  • Added a new dream/nightmare sequence for Anakin, after his first kiss with Padme. This is one of the major pieces of feedback, that we never actually see Anakin have one of his nightmares. I agree with that feedback and added this in.
  • I will release, alongside V2, a version of the edit that does not include the flashback sequence from the Obi-Wan TV show. I realize that some enjoy it being placed in the film, while some do not, so I wanted to offer this as an option. My preferred version of the edit is the one that includes the sequence.

I’ll likely have this out within the next week or so.

Thanks!

AOTC has been updated to V2. I have deprecated V1 as there isn’t much reason to keep it.

The “no flashback” version will be rendered and posted over the weekend.

Hey Spence,

I do rewatch these edits every few months as i enjoy them alot so thank you for that.

One thing, the new V2 of attack of the clones, the nightmare sequence i enjoyed the flashes, but is it possible for that sequence to have a filter, like blurred around the edges similar to the obiwan series? just to kind of show its “in a dream” and only getting edges of the visions thats about the only recommendation i can think of 😃

Man I really like this edit…maybe even more than the Shroud of the Dark Side edit. It flows so well and pretty much all the cringe is gone (I still can’t stand “I tRuLy DeEpLy LoVe YoU” but you handled it well). The beginning of the film is handled so well and the inclusion of the training scene from Kenobi fits perfectly. The dialogue and pace is so much better.

Now, I will say that the entire ending moves a little too quickly with everything between Yoda and Dooku being removed. Feels like it goes from the battle to everyone back on Coruscant in a matter of seconds. I remember the ending of Shroud of the Dark Side feeling pretty well paced, but I’ll have to revisit that one. The only thing that was pretty jarring for me was the quality of some parts of the deleted scenes. I know they are what they are but the added film grain made them that much more distracting.

Overall well done!

I’ve just rewatched TPM & AotC for the first time in a while. Overall I still feel like these are the best versions of these films I’ve yet seen, so a massive thank you for your hard work. The updates to AotC are very welcome and well done.

Upon the rewatch there was just one cut that felt a little off, and I fully acknowledge that I’m being really, really, nitpicky here; during the opening of TPM, when Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are being gassed, the droids no longer speak. Their heads bob, and the droids generally chatter a bit throughout the rest of the film albeit reduced, but they don’t make a noise in this scene. It’s the only scene out of the two movies I’ve rewatched where I felt something was missing or had been cut, which is a testament to just how great the rest of your content is.

Author

I agree and wouldn’t have a problem with that dialogue being left in. In general the tone of battle droids’ voices in ep1 are much more monotone and serious compared to ep3 where they just sound downright silly.

I’d love to give this a go, would it be possible to get a link in PM please Spence?

Thanks for the feedback! Most of the big Ep 1 edits do this with the droid voices, and I’m happy with the decision.
