Absolutely breathtaking work Dre! Any chance for an early Christmas present this year? 😛

He’s probably busy with family and other things considering it’s the holiday season. I’ll wait however long it takes for him to finish rendering the second half because the first half looks amazing.

Asked DrDre myself. His response:
“I’ve made some progress, but sadly I will be going abroad for work until the end of the year, so all projects will be on hold until January.”

Guess we have to wait a little longer.

Damn, well thanks for the update. Hope all goes well with the Doc.

This is ginormous work by DrDre. Absolutely thrilled to watch both parts of the finished work on FoTR 4k Extended. And hoping to see the remaining 2 extended movies Dremastered in coming time to get them as close to the original theatrical release color grade as is possible. Thanks again. 😃

So you are taking the Bluray EE as source and upscaling it to 4K UHD?

The screenshots are amazing.

Do you own the 35mm and use as reference? Like you would look up every cell in the 35mm and try to replicate that on your computer? Wow.

I do look forward to your endeavor, looking forward to another great remaster.

My understanding is this:

  • Extended Bluray as Source
  • using AI to get rid of the edge enhancement present on the Bluray
  • regrading the movie by using a global LUT, only making small adjustments for individual scenes/frames if he feels the global LUT didn’t do a good job
  • using the 35mm cinema prints as reference
  • upscaling the final product to 4k using AI

Does anyone have a link to the 1080p version if this is something that even exists? I only have a link to the 4K version which I cannot play on my TV

Depending on the type of tv you have, you may be able to convert the file format if that’s the issue. I assume you want the color correction. I have to believe that DrDre has the pre upscaled files ready.

As far as I know, a 1080p-Version does not exist. Your only option is to convert the video file. Maybe try to convert to different codec (H264)? The 4k-Version uses HVEC/H265 which not all TVs/Players support.

Thanks for your work on this, very excited after watching the 4K blurays and being slightly disappointed.
Could some PM me a link for the first part?
And does this version differ in some way from the Dremastered theatrical 4k ones ? Besides it being the extended version of course.

And a side question; when it’s finished, could a TrueHD audio track from the 4Ks be added? That’s in my opinion the only real upgrade in those discs.

Its based on the Extended Bluray from 2011 which had much better Picture quality than the theatrical Bluray, at least it Had better encoding, was sharper and more detailed. This results in a much better looking 4k Upscale, even beating the original 4k Bluray. The Colorgrading should also be different compared to the theatrical 4k Dremastered.

How are the colors different? Did DrDre’s theatrical version get a color regrade at all or was the original 2099 bluray grade used? How do they differ?

The Theatrical 4k Dremastered is basically just a 4k-Upscale without any regrading. There was nothing wrong with the color grading of the Theatrical Bluray.

The Extended 4k Dremastered on the other hand has a different color grading. One, you have not seen on any official home release.
Its somewhere in between the Theatrical Bluray and the Extended Bluray. More nuanced than the theatrical but without the Green tint.

After some careful consideration I decided to have a go at remastering the extended edition blurays of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, starting with The Fellowship of the Ring. Since the bluray for FOTR has a number of issues, and is generally considered too green, the first step will be to regrade the bluray based on 35mm film reference frames. I finished regrading the first half of the film. Here are a few example shots:

Here’s an album with a 150 shots:
