I don't hate either version to be honest, but I think concept wise Lucas should have made Anakin alot older in Episode I to begin with (roughly the same age as Luke in ANH), so that by the time Episode 3 rolled around he would have been at least 30 years old, and by the end of Episode 6 he would have been in his late 50's, which match Shaw's look a little better.

To me Episode 3 Anakin should actually be the look of Episode 2 Anakin, and Episode 3 Anakin should resemble Shaw's look, but again it's all conceptual flaws IMO.
