Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released! — Page 44

Williarob compiled the tool for Mac with my support as a favour to some users, but there’s no long term support for Mac outside of what people like Williarob are willing to do. I don’t have a Mac, sadly, so I can’t be of help.

Thanks to Dr Dre for this great tool.
I have several questions:

  • In your projects, do you apply only one LUT on the film? Or do you use a LUT for each scene ?
If you do it for each scene, it must take you a long time (crop a reference image, and start the process for each scene)

Sometimes the results are not accurate on small areas, if I want to fix that I figured I had to do this:
-Relaunch the process, with in test image, the LUT applied (to generate a second LUT on top).
Is this the correct method?

Whether you apply a LUT for the whole film or on a scene by scene or even shot by shot basis is up to your taste and the goal of the project. Some films can be improved with one single LUT, while others will need further adjustment for specific scenes and/or shots.

You can only use a LUT on top if the previous resulting image is used as the new test image.

Dre, do you have any tips on how to make a good LUT for an entire scene? I often find myself trying to find the best shot in a scene but it often produces unsatisfactory results in other shots. I saw a video from williarob from a while back where he basically makes a collage of shots and matches several at the same time, producing hopefully a better LUT for a batch of shots as opposed to a single shot. Do you recommend this? If so, do you know a quick way to get me to create a collage like that? Regardless, this tool is wonderful and what it achieves is astonishing, thank you so much.

Try making a collage of test frames and reference frames.

I’ve recently started using this tool and have to say I’m really impressed with it. I created a collage of 8 individual images for the comparison and the results it created were nothing short of amazing.
Certainly far better than I would have ever been able to achieve with manual filters.

Thank you for producing such a useful and powerful tool 👍🏻

So no one can configure it for an M1 version? Just ignore the post and pretend Mac users don’t want/need this software? I wish it was available to all in a paid version where it didn’t crash or just not even open.

Perhaps you should try and develop a version for M1. Otherwise just try to appreciate that some of us develop these tools in their spare time for free, and don’t have the time to cater to every individual user’s needs.

Has nothing to do with “individual needs.” Why would I “appreciate” something I can’t use anymore? Apple is M1 now, and most video editors with on Mac. People have been posting Mac links and they DO NOT work. So yeah, sucks that you and others admonish half the people out there just because you offer something for "free’ that doesn’t work then scold them for it. Sad. man. As an editor who used the tool, its a shame you have that attitude and don’t care that many can’t use it anymore instead of “fixing” it for free or, as I said, CHARGING for it, because I know a lot of people who would pay that can’t use at anymore. Food for thought, dude. It’s an amazing tool and the people I know who can’t use it anymore are struggling to find something else. But I figured since that one dude keeps posting a Mac link like it works that all was good, when it actually isn’t. When a lot of people who do editing with on Mac, then it has nothing to do with “individual needs”… its a lot of people’s needs. And they would pay for the efforts.

All I said was its a shame it doesn’t work for a lot of people anymore, and you ignored tat, until I posted again, then you chose to attack me. So, cool, dude. Be proud of your software that doesn’t work.

Pardon my ignorance but iMovie I think has a pretty decent color match tool now and that comes with every Mac basically. Plus, I’m sure you can just look up some other ones that are compatible on the Internet and even if it’s stuff you’d need to pay for, you could find ways to “acquire” it through other means if you REALLY need it that badly. Put in the work. Otherwise, you just need to seethe and cope, my dude.

Is the code open source for other forum members to compile the latest version for Mac? I’d be interested in giving it a swing, if that’s something you’d be open to.

I have compiled a 64-bit version for OSX. I tested it on my Macbook pro (still running OSX High Sierra) and on a virtual machine (still running on OSX Sierra), and it worked on both but I can’t tell you for sure that it will run on Catalina, so give it a go:

Web installer (32 MB): https://mega.nz/#!D9JUzCRC!0B482Vg6yIC9eZXKAsOMdLnLvFItG5bv5JKJ0BJraYI

Full installer (879 MB): https://mega.nz/#!D1YUnATI!g21ed17ldNaXQ0ZZN43_j3dEFBxsNeO8foslxuDD98A

Note: either way, you will have to download about 900 MB: the only difference is that the web installer will download the other 800+ MB during install whereas the full installer requires the download up front. When I tested them, the web installer was unable to connect to the matlab URL it needed to in order to download the rest of it, so you might be better off with the bigger download…

sorry do you mid re-uping this… missed it.

I can tell you that it no longer works under Mac OS Sonoma. The app installs and loads fine, but it freezes on adding a sample image.

You could just use virtualbox, parallels, or maybe even WINE to run the windows version.

I have tried almost everything, Playonmac, wine, wineskin, and nothing ever seems to work.
may I ask how you compiled it in the beginning? what software did you use?

Virtualbox or parallels running windows would definitely work.

The program is compiled with Matlab.

I tried Parallels, Crossover and Whisky. Nothing works. The app loads, but it is slow, and then either freezes at the start of the colormatching process, or it doesn’t start colormatching at all. I am using an M1 Mac mini.

same exact problem I’m having here. nothing works for me.
I’ve given up hope.

Does anyone have v2.2 or v2.1 of this tool that they’d be willing to share with me? I messaged DrDre a month ago, but I don’t think he logs in much these days. I’ve been using v1.2 for about a year now and it’s such a great tool.

V1.2 is the current version that is available. I don’t know where you would get older ones (v2.2 or 2.1)…

Why does it say that v1.3 is released? Seems a little bit misleading?

I’m pretty sure 1.3 saw a Windows release. But that was a few dead computers ago so I have no way to verify a rather fuzzy memory.

Preferred Saga:
1,2: Numeraljoker extended
3: L8wrtr
4,6-9: Hal9000
5: Adywan

Here you go everybody:

Dr Dre’s color Matching tool v1.2 (latest version) for 64 bit Windows*:

https://ln.sync.com/dl/e51125f10/njry8grb-juw5i7vz-ttrapwci-cb4cxh9j (385 MB)

Dr Dre’s color Matching tool v1.2 (latest version) for 64 bit OSX:

https://ln.sync.com/dl/89689baa0/6c22akdh-3ct3f4wr-mwmscjkw-5q7xg6hb (10 MB)**

* If you have a 64 bit version of Windows AND you have more than 4 GB of RAM AND you need to color match two giant images (4k or 8k with 16-bit color, or 2 giant 8K size montages of images, then it would be worth uninstalling the 32-bit version and downloading and installing the 64-bit version. I don’t think you will find it is any faster under “normal use” situations.

** Why is the mac version so much smaller? Simple really: in 2014, Matlab enhanced it’s package builder with some new features, one of which is an option to download the runtime package from the internet during install. The windows version was compiled with the 2012 compiler, which doesn’t have this option (or the option to change the icon and splash screen).

Enjoy!

If you have any issues with the new versions, let us know.

Does this setup still work?

Tried installing, but everything closes after Visual C++ 2005 configuration. The Runtime Install window never opens.

Only R2017b and later versions work for me, I guess because they changed the installer?

EDIT: Nvm, the one here works without a hitch: https://valeyard.net/2017/03/drdres-color-matching-tool-v1-2.php

Tried the OS X version and on my Mac Studio (M1 MAX 32GB RAM) on macOS 15.3 and it just crashes after like 2% downloaded, so pretty quickly after launch.

Williarob recently recompiled it for Mac recently, and it works. He is currently testing it. Wait, it’ll be here soon.
